I bought requiem as well, but i did it for rondo of blood. I love the 16 bit Castlevanias the most. It was a real shame that they seperated rondo of blood from super Castlevania and Castlevania bloodlines. Konami is a jerk for that.
Symphony of the night was great too though, you should play bloodstained ritual of the night.

I only tried it when I was in my teens after it had been out for a few years, but I never imagined Castlevania on a big ol' map. Schmoo, the little ghost at the library drops the Crissaegrim , the best weapon in the game wich is a one handed sword , however it is an extreme rare drop so wearing aaccesories to raise LUCK definitely helps , This sword is ideal for grinding other items or for finish the game without much difficulty, personally I only use it to grind other items since otherwise the game becomes very easy . If you are a collector and want all the weapons and shields, you definitely need this sword to speed up the grinding process

A few notes that make the fact that this isn’t in Switch even sillier. This game can be played on Xbox 360, Xbox One and Xbox Series machines as well(it’s a digital 360 game but it’s fully backwards supported for the newer consoles). You can also get a PS2(which are far easier to find then a PS3 or PSX because they sold so well) and play the PSX game on that.

Why are we using the current year to re-define a game that has already been exalted as the greatest
for Decades. "Metriodvanina" is literally a genre of game and has a booming market today. Why are YTbers making
hollowed content of subjects that all gamers are already aware of? Captain Obvious topics. Stop using the current
year to justify content. It means nothing.

The other is the word play on the titles of these videos. " 2023 " is used to make it relevant, very much like people use the year to justify unnecessary change. ( which Im sick of hearing ) If your viewers are gamers then Im sure they know what Castlevania is and if they didnt know about this game, its because they where never interested in Castlevania the first place. Had you just reviewed an old game without the whooing of the year... I wouldnt care.

It's handy to have around, but I think anyone who hasn't played Symphony of the Night yet should play the original version FIRST! I never liked the Xbox 360 version very much, but after the PS4 version came out, I realized the Xbox 360 version wasn't THAT bad... But at the end of the day, it's great to have so many options, and I do have all of them except the Sega Saturn version. :)

I love this game. Missed out on it at first and played it 5 or 6 years afte release. One thing that I do think is a shame about the version that you played is that the dialogue/script is actually a bit less charming than the original. In the original there were some uh... translation issues. But it made for some amazing lines that are just fun to say/hear, even if it's not 100% accurate English. They sorta 'fixed' that and as a result... I think it's a bit worse. Kinda similar case with the Resident Evil 1 remake, I guess. The Playstation classic had very 'fun' lines and voice acting, but with the Gamecube remake, they remade the whole game and the dialogue and voice acting were upgraded to the new standards. It is an actual remake though, they changed lots of things, added some things, etc. But overal it's one of the few remakes that's pretty much better than the original in every way. Not that the original is bad, the remake is just that great (and has also since been remastered and released for modern systems... no Switch sadly even though the original was on Gamecube).
Nice to see you enjoyed this game. I had no idea you liked games this much. And not just casual games or easy games, even challenging ones like the original Castlevania.

For anyone who loved this game, also try Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night which is a spiritual successor made by the same lead developer, Koji Igarashi. It even has a wink and a nod version of Alucard, with a different name of course, you can find in the castle. So many similar eater eggs. Be aware the Switch version has slowdown issues though as this game uses Unreal Engine 4.
Anyways, he was so upset Konami never allowed him to make more Metroidvania games for consoles, he left and created his own company to do just that. He also made some handheld Metroidvania games at Konami for the Gameboy Advance and Nintendo DS, if you're looking for even more games like this he made.

the voice acting on the rereleases of the game is completely different from the PS1 original voice acting
the new VA is just terrible, it's not good nor memorable. the original wasn't good either but it was iconic and gave us all those memorable quotes like "die monster, you don't belong in this world" and "what is a man? a miserable pile of secrets".
at 7:15 you seem to think this new VA is the original when it's not, but you still have a point with your critique
SotN's original VA is a time capsule, while the new VA tries way too hard to be serious and modernize it by removing the cheesiness that it just falls flat on it's face and loses any and all charm the original had. It just doesn't work.

Just so you know Clayton, don't give Konami too much credit. The developers that made SotN left Konami A LONG TIME AGO and made Bloodstained as an indie developer. There has been A LOT OF THINGS that has happened in the gaming industry in relation to what kind of company Konami REALLY IS.
As a self proclaimed observer of the gaming industry since the 90s, Konami, like many other corporations, have skeletons in their closet. If you think Activision-Blizzard, Bobby Kotick and his cronies are BAD, Konami has its own brand of EVIL.
Lets just say that the Rabbit hole is DEEPER than it seems IF you ever TRY to investigate it...

  • @Syragar
    @Syragar 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

That voice acting is actually different from the original Playstation version of the game. It actually sounds a bit improved. The dialog seems improved as well. For example, in 7:36 they replaced the well known line, "What is a man? A miserable little pile of secrets!" with "Ha! Mankind. A cesspit of hatred and lies." The latter feels like it would be a much better translation of what he was supposed to say.
Also, if you really enjoy this Casltevania, I'd suggest you try out any of the Castlevania games made by Koji Igarashi (he goes by "Iga" for short). He's responsible for taking Castlevania in this direction, so his games are similar. SotN is probably the best of his games, but the others are still VERY good. Harmony of Dissonance... while good... is probably my least favorite of his games (the horrible music has something to do with that)... but HoD has a similar "gotcha" moment like SotN does when you think you've 100% the game... but it's done in such a way that is really shocking and it happens much earlier in the game. I don't want to spoil it. The other games... Aria of Sorrow, Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, and Order of Ecclesia... are all FANTASTIC. There's also Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night... a game made by Iga that is basically the successor of his Castlevania games after he left Konami. You can tell Bloodstained was made by the same guy responsible for SotN. I highly recommend it!

I just bought a CRTV at a yard sale. Found a copy of Synphony of the Night on Facebook. Now I’m actively trying to track down a PS2 to play it on. Can’t wait!!! Also, love Redacted
Thanks for fearlessly reporting the truth that others won’t

I've never beaten the original Castlevania either. Besides Mega Man, action platformers have never been my genre, but I love RPGs, so I was pulled towards this one.
I didn't play it on the PlayStation, though. I played the Xbox 360 Arcade port.

What wrong with you you just now playing this? I played this all the way through it twice on the PlayStation 1.
And then it was only $5 or something on Series x so I bought it and I've had it for several years. But just decided to play it about a week ago. And what lets you know the game is an absolute classic is that almost 30 years later the game is still just as amazing and still produced just as much dopamine release in my brain as it did back in 97 and 98 when I played through it twice.
The whole atmosphere, the music everything is just amazing.
    Edit...
I know it's hard for people to believe is that a game released in 1997 can be just as awesome has any game released in 2024. This is a game that held up so well that even if it was released in 2024 it would still be just as amazing.

Find the Lucky Mode passcode and use that not that you’ve beaten it legit. Luck starts aggressively high but all the other stats are pure glass cannon level.
Basic, “I Reincarnated As The Weakest Hero With The Strongest Weapons: The Anime: the game.”

The cheesy voice acting isn't that bad. It's just that we today have higher expectations.
Even for Resident Evil 1 when it came out, the VA was so cheesy people actually mistook it for a horror parody.

Man, CastleVania: Syphony of the Night is one of the best CastleVania games to date in my opinion. However, I would really love for them to remake it with Unreal 5 or whatever Konami wants to use.

It's funny, I bought this when it first came out and I wasn't into it, so I ended up bringing it back to the store. Not sure what I was thinking back in 1997... maybe I was just ready to move on from platformers to 3D polygon games. I recently got back into the game via the Duckstation emulator, and man oh man, I got hooked. What a terrific and nostalgic game.

I got this game on XBLA on my 360 but I've never played it and my 360 requires replacement so it won't happen anytime soon. A corporate merger between service providers has made it so Xbox 360 will never connect to the internet again, so a replacement console without the parental lock is required along with a HD transfer. Yikes! That was a lot to say!

I don't blame you for not keeping a fixed eye on all things gaming when you were in university. The PS1 especially was just flooded with quality titles, so even stone cold classics could easily slip through the cracks. This was the golden age of video games after all.

The Retro Hour podcast interviewed the guy who worked at Konami Japan who did the Symphony of the Night translation. He said he had to take a lot of licence with the dialogue because it didn't translate well from Japanese to English. He also said that in those days no one higher up checked his work so he had free licence to do what he wanted.
When I first got an MP3 player in 2005, I use to listen to the SOTN soundtrack when I was working.

The original dialogue from the ps1 was even cheesier lol. I love it. Unfortunately they changed it to what you heard since the psp re release which was a bonus you could unlock inside the psp game castlevania the dracula x chronicles (a remake of rondo of blood)

Sadly, the VA was changed for all versions after the original PSX release, starting with the release on the Rondo of Blood remake on PSP. I prefer that VA, it's even cheesier, it's so campy it's fantastic. Though that VA is different, so it sounds like they recorded a third time for the PS4 release. The Xbox 360 release has the same VA as the PSP.
I should point out in reference to what you're saying you don't want spoiled...um it doesn't "happen" at all. You have to figure out with some very minor clues. It's so hard to figure out that most of my friends growing up who had played it, I had gotten into arguments with them that it exists, and for them, it did not. So I had to show them how and that it was very real. Until the internet, you'd be surprised how many players have never found it, no matter how often they've gone back and forth. My guess is a lack of recollection on a few hidden areas that are only accessible after unlocking certain equipment, like one special armour that breaks one specific trap type.
It's very easy to miss unless you get into two specific conversations with one person. Then re-enter a special room with a specific sub-weapon and use that sub-weapon in the room, leading to a secret, that leads to another secret, that unlocks a special accessory that has to be equipped to unlock yet another secret in the "final boss" battle, that then unlocks the truly special secret you're trying to avoid spoiling.

They likely don’t bundle it because it is a dense game with a massive number of drops, an intuitive magic system, and it has a pretty strong New Game+ system.

Damn, I finished this awesome game two times this year : first in august on PS4, and the second on Recalbox original PS1 version emulated, on september. Both close to 100 % (97% I believe) and I still playing now with Belmont. This game is so great. For all what you said. The loot is may be the weakest point, but there's a lot of stuff to experiment.
I advise you to try Aria of Sorrow now, it's the same game with a Pokemon feature (capture ennemies capacities).
I was a video game journalist at that time, and while I launched it a week-end, I had never get the opportunity to finish it. Now it's done, I have taken the time too play it, and I'm pretty sure I will dive in again next year.

You can beat the game in 4 hours but you get the fake ending. If you watch the credits roll after beating Richter after 4 hours and then you quit playing you are a dummy because you got the wrong ending.
    There are multiple endings.

I remember required reading lists in high school but there needs to be a required gaming list as well. Symphony of the Night and Shadow of the Colossus should be at the very top of that list.

Hey Clayton I loved this game so much I beat the secret versions of it and had them saved on a memory card on my old PS2. I recently saw it was in the PS store and of course I bought it and downloaded it and it is just as good as I remember it. Always told everyone that this game was the best Castlevania of the franchise.

Fleaman is one of the most annoying yeah lol this was one of the best reviews of the game. Mainly it's because it's not reviewed from a technical standpoint but based on what made it fun for you and just the way you explained it reminds me of how we explained the game to friends. It's like a conversation with a friend. Really cool.
