Since I first played Half-Life when I was a kid, I always wondered how would Black Mesa look like without the accident. This section in particular always made me think. Thanks for doing this.
8:30 - Gotta love how Black Mesa had an opening to a thousand-foot drop without any guard railing. OSHA would have a field day if they were ever allowed into the facility. Lol
Black mesa is famous for having bottomless pits without security, even in the start of the game you see gus the forklifter near a bottomless pit moving boxes
@@dikkejos It's not Source, but GoldSuorce! But seriously, I think it was mentioned by Marc Laidlaw (or maybe in the walkthrough for the Alpha) that Black Mesa got that old military facility. Also the official Prima Guide clearly says about "Cold War" facility. Also some textures for old furniture and very old computers have "FIFTIES" in their names.
The only problem is that certain areas weren't really connected to each other via hallways. Remember how many times Gordon had to use vents and holes in walls?
@@honzabalak3462 You could still smash through vents. And you could bypass those areas with alternate paths that were blocked off, or the tram system that now would work.
The Silo appears to be an old decommissioned section of Black Mesa, judging by the old equipment and rusted, worn out turbines and machines, etc. Not at all unlike the areas in On A Rail.
Yes, the cage with the crossbow must have been added before the resonance cascade too. So they ran out of space for messing around with aliens and filled some with water...
@@GoldSrcFreeman That's nice to hear, I still stand by what I said: If you are going to continue repairing maps it would make a great and unique mappack that allows you to explore Black Mesa all over again with a fresh coat of paint.
I very seriously doubt all of that very Earth-like water flooded these areas of Black Mesa as a result of the Resonance Cascade. Unless this area of Black Mesa shared this space with a very large tank of water that leaked out because of damage caused by the disaster.
I’d love a Half-Life mod where it has the entire campaign but nothing wrong happens. Just you walking around between facilities as you would do in the actual game, but all in a clean state.
Isn't the place at 3:55 an actual shark tank before resonance cascade? I mean, there was a rusty shark cage and a crossbow, lets ignore the fact that the scientist there said that the ichtyosaur never swam on terrestrial water.
No it's the same place but the fish got there afterwards. I assume after it got flooded, the shark cage was prepared to kill the Ichtyosaur but no one had the balls or equipment to do so. It is also revealed in Opposing Force that the fish itself was being studied by the scientists much before the incident. So they knew it's anatomy, therefore they knew how to neutrilize/kill it as well.
This is something I really appriciate, I don't know what it is but I find the industrial enviroments in half-life and half-life 2 just something awe inspiring
this makes me think that the silo hasn't been in operation for a long time, and that some time before the events of hl1 it was repurposed as a marine research lab.
The deep pool in original game has some bright glowing red strips on the bottom. I took time to dive down with cheats, since i assumed it was some kind of reactor or temporary nuclear waste storage. Nah, just glowing bars on the bottom of the deepest dive in the whole game. No nuclear damage.
That part of the video (and only that part) gives me a really creepy feeling. It's like one of those "oddly familiar places" videos, but I know I've never seen anything remotely like it. Maybe it's a liminal space, but I can't possibly see how.

I haven't seen this place in my dreams (what are the odds of me jinxing it as I say it), but I did recall seeing two similar brown structures, and there was actually windows, it wasn't creepy at all. But I actually did fall into the pit below, so yeah.
I admit that before the incident cascade, at 6:29 is large and looks terrible for me. But after resonance cascade happen, those facility flooded and looks scarier for me. Well, i don't why, but yeah that's more terrible. Also for that "thing".
I think things wouldn't be as rusty before the water came so maybe there is non-rusty textures to those generators. Otherwise, its a pretty nice project.

So cool, now I have to fight the desire to repaint the rusty walls properly so it would be like the day it was completed by some contractor that was probably shot by black ops right after.
Hey man! I am super impressed! I was researching the topic of c2a3b and I found your video. Then I recognized your name. And on top of that, you might find it funny that I attempted this same exact restoration project some time last year. I was able to recreate the generator room and it took me a lot of time. You must have spent a ton of time on this. Would you mind sharing the .bsp file? Cheers!
That's interesting. For me it was maybe a week and a half (spent most of the time trying to recreate the original lighting style). I think I'll upload the bsp's on Moddb soon.

It's logical actually, this place wouldn't have a lot of people inside it, especially scientists.. maybe a few guards and maintenance workers, that's it
Actually first part is a little bit wrong? Where is the seperation wall? And where is that platform which freeman elevated with barrels? Other parts was 10/10 good job
Hi. It was interesting to watch the video. I used to spend a lot of time investigating and exploring places in Valve's games. Good level design indeed. I would dive and reach the bottom of that pit, only to discover nothing, but I was curious. :) Are you going to update/open Nova Prospect and some dark places of the Citadel as well? Thank you.

Кстати есть ли в планах доделать локацию в коридоре на 2 минуте? Который в оригинале засыпан, конечно там в оригинале тупик и что там должно быть неизвестно, доделка той области будет уже отсебятина, но все равно интересно было бы посмотреть что то за область могла быть, как и за закрытой дверью на 9 минуте. Из таких глав еще было бы интересно глянуть на лаборатории в Lambda Core.
Насчет того, чтобы доделать: разве что если это понадобится для какой-нибудь машинимы. Вот Лямбда уже гораздо интереснее в этом плане. Очень обидно, что они не стали показывать лаборатории, а просто позакрывали двери. interesting to see there's no actual use for the silo infrastructure, the elevator looks prefab and they're just stacking boxes on each level did black mesa run out of funding on the project it was a part of? did they just can it for production reasons? is it stuck in development hell? did they realize they only needed so many silos and mothball it? reminds me of the vandenberg space complex or the north dakota pyramid, both abandoned as soon as they were completed
All these silos are left from the military. The whole Black Mesa built inside some old military base and uses almost all of it silos for different purposes.
i think it would be better if the ichytosaur pool was actually just a huge storage (aka crate) unit, that would also explain that crane. As for that other ichytosaur pool which just has a giant void, i have no idea lol.

Да, там даже не хватает стандартной дальности прорисовки, чтобы увидеть дно сверху. Возможно изначально они планировали там какой-то геймплей, но в итоге передумали, а яма осталась.

Of course. I can send you the maps. But you should know there's only one map has the adequate geometry, for the others I used decompiled and slightly fixed versions of the maps. So I guess you'd have to fix them by yourself.

I think thats because of those machines being built pre cold war, so they are at least 30-50 years old by the time of Half-Life

I think this is my least favorite level in the game.
