Alfred the Great [Old English Song] HD Remake | The Skaldic Bard

- Here’s a song I wrote in Old English a while ago, which I have decided to remake. Music, lyrics and arrangement by myself, with vocals by me and my wife.
The song is dedicated to perhaps the greatest Englishman in history, King Alfred the Great. The song is largely based on the Anglo Saxon Chronicle’s telling of the Battle of Edington/Ethandun in which King Alfred overcame the Great Heathen Army and baptised their king, Guthrum.
In a church in my hometown, there’s a stained glass window which portrays Alfred with the tagline “Subduer of the Danes”, which I thought was an awesome title, so I just had to implement it!
I hope you enjoy!

Any chance you'll ever make Rolandskvadet in Latin?
Hail the memory of King Alfred the Great, defender of England and English Christians!

I thought Oswald Moseley said that
as someone who hails from a small town in south west England called Cippanhamme,(old english) where King Alfred the great sister was married to the king of Mercia. it was later sacked by Danelaw and shortly after Alfred beat the Danelaw army at Edington. it brings me so much joy hearing this! really great work man! im really getting into Anglo-Saxon history
Awesome stuff
Friend!
Am at my grandmothers at the moment and introduced her to your music: the following is what she commends of you
She thinks your flair for languages is astounding and impressive and she thinks the world could do with more of people like you.
Back to my praises now. I’m really pleased you’ve remade this, it is genuinely one of my favourite and the difference in quality is astounding compared to the original. Well done.
This is so much smoother and clearer than the previous. Well done
Loved that your wife joined in. Added more depth
Keep it up as always
God bless
How lovely!
This made my day, outrageous levels of wholesomeness. God bless your based grandmother, and you, my friend, for the constant support. It means the world!
@@SkaldBard never gonna stop. Your content is unmatched and you deserve a following hundreds of times your current. (I feel my grandmother may have put you one subscriber closer, and knowing grandparents, all the pensioners in the village will do so soon, haha!
Seriously though, I’m pretty chuffed you recognise me now.
Thanks, my friend - very edifying! And the quip about the pensioners gave me a good chuckle ;-)
I honour you and several of the other frequent commenters as Wīgmenn of the Bardic Fyrd, so be sure that your support is much appreciated.
England needs Ælfred once again
This is incredible, great work!
Sure does. Thank you, good sir
WHAT ARE THE CHANCES this was the last old english song i listend (the orginial) to yesterday
Chad
@@SkaldBard Nah man your the chad for even making this possible
Such a truly inspirational tale of a man who stood tall over so many brutal warriors, defending his people and increasing their quality of life, and encouraging the realm to learn and read. He truly earned the nickname "The Great".
The fact you didn't just remake this but but had your wife joined in i could imagine a remake of last varangians in the future having your mrs sing alongside apparently theres a rare note saying there was a rare female varangian
Hail to you Alfred, my King
Thanks for this gift. There aren't enough people with your gifts. God bless you.
Thanks so much, God bless
Odd that Spotify has been playing this piece more often recently.
I loved it back when it was originally released, and loving it now!
Saint King Ælfred the Great, pray for us! 🙏☦️
I have to show my appreciation of this fine work of art, man. This is absolutely phenomenal!
My friend, thanks so much for the support - it really helps and means a lot! God bless you
Outstanding 👏 thank you for connecting us back to our roots. Hail King Alfred the Great.
A great remix! Feels like England could use another Alfred these days. All of Europe, too, for that matter. Someone we could hail as “gewieldend Sarkena ond iudena”. (Forgive my grammar.)
Superb job. This song needed HD remake and as always, you nailed it!

This sounds AMAZING! Harold Godwinson in this remake format would make my year! Much love.
Watch this space ;-)
Me after I saw title: Why remake, first version was good? Me after I wach: Nope, this is a good version!😍
This sounds like the most accurate pronunciation of Old English I've heard, based on what I'd expect.
What a coincidence that I'm watching the TV series "The Last Kingdom" right now, in which Alfred is one of the main characters
And the song itself turned out to be amazing. Great job!
As a person of 98% Nordic and Anglo-Saxon descent learning the language of my ancestors your songs help out a tonne
What a gift! It came exactly when I was studying Anglo-Saxon history before to the Norman conquest. King Alfred is a fascinating character to learn about. Most popular culture prefers to narrate stories about Viking invaders rather than those who fought pirate invasions. Early English history is fascinating, from the Saxon conquest to the shift in beliefs, internal battles, unifications, Viking invasions, religion disputes, and so on. Damn, I'm not even English, but the events of 1066 almost brought me to tears. Thankyou for this!
So glad you're going back and rerecording some of these older songs mate. This sounds perfect! Really nice balance between the instruments and the vocals, with neither overpowering the other. This quality is really, really good!
I have been listening to your music for I'd guess 6 months now, and frankly find it fantastic. Really enjoyable stuff, the Germanic Songs and specifically Old English Songs really scratch an itch for me, being of Germanic descent, and finding the history so enjoyable. Not sure if you've studied either language but the idea of a sort of North Sea Germanic/"Ingvaeonic" tune including, Old English, Old Frisian, and Old Saxon could be really cool. Anyway, keep it up and Godspeed brother I'm excited for what is to come!
By the way you've really given this song an upgrade! Great job brother.
Thank you, friend! I do have some plans for that neck of the woods, just a matter of finding enough reliable material to give it a good go. Appreciate the support!
If there ever was a King who did deserve the title " The Great" King Alfred certainly fits the bill.
Extravagant song you've made here Sir; perfect mix of intense Choir war chanting for motivational drawl and complementary instrumental melody ( specifically the flute). What makes it special to me is how the story being told is just at the right tempo to hear the words in its fullness, close to how a bard tells a tale. This definitely is one of your top works.
I'm looking forward to the Spotify release, God bless Sir to you and your wife for your excellent art!
Much appreciated, my friend
Thank you for what you do. May God bless and protect you and your wife.
Your songs lift my heart from despair and bring me hope.
God bless, friend
O - how beautiful. This is so oddly touching; your work always is, but this one I dare count among the best you've made so far. Many thanks to you for this, bard, and many thanks to your wife - you're truly blessed.
Many thanks indeed, my good man - glad you enjoyed it
Saint king Ælfred the great intercede for us and help us defeat evil!✝️☦️
Didn't think the song could be any better! Great stuff
I'm a big fan of King Alfred the Great and I really enjoyed this song.
funnily enough the second song i listened from your channel and now the second HD remake and it's so good it'd probably make edward the elder jealous
Haha, love it!
Another amazing song, you and your wife never fail to impress! Thank you for all your hard work on this channel, I'm looking forward to listening to this one on repeat!
Masterpiece
Thank you for the high praise!
Anyone else getting the urge to rewatch Last Kingdom again?
This is an amazing song!
Last? What happened to kingdoms?
@@RachDarastric2 Taken over by the Danelaw, leaving just the kingdom of Wessex. It’s a show based on Bernard Cornwells books.
Both Vikings and Last Kingdom. I like to think of Vikings as an indirect prequel to Last Kingdom
It's an astonishing gift from God, sir, you are a gift, your talent, and the Tongue of David's poetry. May our lord, who is in heaven bless you and your family. We shall pray for you. From a fellow brother in Christ.
Thank you, my friend - I appreciate the prayers. God bless you

Saint Alfred, pray for us. Named my second son for him. If you haven't read it, I highly recommend the Life of Alfred, by Asser, especially the Giles translation.
I'd say this is the best song you've made so far!
I've been silently begging for this so much over the past few days, thank you so much!
p.s. its almost like the Skaldic Bard can read my mind, because it seems that almost everytime I wish for something, he uploads it within a week (it happened with Herr Mannelig and the Gallowglass Warriors, too!)
Haha, love it - I'll be sure not to abuse this power 🧠 ;-)
Warmth and wonderment for heart and soul as per usual, brother.
Loving these remakes. The originals were good, but these carry the mark of better audio and a finer tuning that is a delight to see. Keep it up and I look forward to more.
Thanks, mate!
Absolutely amazing! I love all of your songs but I feel especially connected with the Old English ones. Thank you! 😁
The song was peak musical experience as always
Phenomenal! another beautiful composition. We await songs about Carlos Martel and the victory at Tours and the battle of the brave men of Lepanto. greetings from southern Brazil!
Viva Cristo Rei!
Love it. Keep up the good work.

Was anxiously expecting this ngl. You didn't disappoint me one bit. You are doing lord's work
I love this song! It sounds very epic. I sadly had not even heard of Alfred the Great until now. Amazing job of a song of amazing history.
Thank you for another banger! Your voice here sounds even more epic than usual. God bless.
A great song about the greatest king England has ever had, this Alfred (for it is my name like the king) approves! 👍
This is incredible
wonderful
God idk which version I like better😅 better listen to them both 20 more times🤷♂️
This is one of your best!
THIS SOUNDS SO BEAUTIFUL! I just simply love it so much keep it up! See you very soon i hope.
King Alfred and King Harold are England's greatest heroes in my opinion
Hard to disagree
@@SkaldBard Great job here! I heard the original and this one's better. I like how your wife joined you at the end there.
I would say Redwald of East Anglia is a strong contender, but I am biased, being from Norfolk 😉
@@Eastcyning Harold was once earl of East Anglia too
@@Dovahkiin8646 Very true! Redwald still ekes out the #1 spot for me, though. Not sure if it's because of the fact he was Bretwalda, or the (most probable) owner of the Sutton Hoo helmet, or because he made East Anglia the dominant player in Britain - maybe a combination of all the above
Can you make one on King Edmund of east Anglia? He was second last Anglo Saxon king of England. He couldn't defend his kingdom from the Vikings but in his last act of defiance he demanded the leader of viking to convert to Christianity for which he was captured and tortured by them
🔥
I must say that I really like your songs. I'd love it if more of them were on Spotify (lyrics would be cool too)
Nice to be first :D
Beautiful song as always, love this remake. Maybe an Old Norse/Old English version of Ved Stanford Brua would be interesting
King Harold Godwinson remake soon 👀👀
Great work as always!
It's already perfect but I'd be down to hear another take on that masterpiece

I loved the old song but truth be told the quality was rather poor. Great to have it remade! Excellent work! I love the new version.

I just found out a new region of music you should check out- Occitan, France.
The region was originally a Basque area that got culturally absorbed by the Celts, conquered by the Romans & then the Franks. All their Medieval folk music, that I've found so far, either sounds like English/ German/ Scandanavian folk, or some sort of primitive Oompah (usually the latter when it seems to be party music). Just to be sure it's not Basque influence, I looked up what their music sounds like & that's more like a cross between Irish & Greek. Nothing like this.
Ooh!
Брат спосибо! Но я жду песню о Хенгисте. И о Аларихе Великом.
I hope I will see you one day make a song either about Mircea the Great or Vlad the Impaler of Wallachia in Old Romanian
ye were clearly illuminated while remastering this song,
Crazy how "hamas" means entirely different things in Old vs Modern English
Can you do Old English Jerusalem next?
@SkaldicBard..
From 527-918 the kingdom of Mercia was 1 of 3 most powerful entities on the isles. I assume you are familiar with this 1 notable character King Offa (Mercian king)
Next Jórsalanám HD remake, and of course 13.5.
Skaldic bard I don't comment much. However since I am saxon descent I am learning old english .but I learned that king alfred spoke old saxon he did translate writings into old english. I want to suggest if at all possible can you make this song and the palastinlied in old saxon would be amazing.
Dislikers are those Danse !
Salty Guthrum
Alfred was indeed possibly the greatest king England had but he didn’t rule over a united England and he was a great supporter of Edmund the Martyr, who subsequently became that patron saint of England.
It’s a personal preference I know but I would support a new patron saint of England: St. Edward the Confessor. He’d certainly be mine.
I don't like Edward The Confessor. He was a big Norman shill. Edmund is our true patron saint.
you should make one about Henry the 5th
Have you considered producing songs concerning the Keraite, and Naiman tribes?
"B-But. .I thought Assassin's Creed was historically accurate. ." (I hate that franchise)
Abominable distortion of history from an abominable company, I share your hatred.
Yeah those games aren't historically accurate at all. Valhalla has magic in it I think lol.
@Dovahkiin8646 lol more than magic. It literally adds in the Norse gods and then later spits in their faces in a secret ending by saying, "turns out all the Norse gods were actually our made up pre-human race called Isu" like they did with Christianity in earlier games.
Additionally, many historical figures and events didn't happen in the game the way they actually did, and it makes a mockery by twisting history so the Vikings dominate all of England. The Christophobia is real with Valhalla, and that's not even just because you play as a Viking.
@@OnCydig That's just ridiculous lol. Those games bore me to death anyway, so I never play them.
I can't even believe they butchered our boy like they did in Valhalla. DISGUSTING. Absolutely unforgivable.
