Vocals and arrangement by Farya Faraji, the painting is "Battle of Grunwald" by Jan Matejko. Bogurodzica is a Polish, medieval Catholic hymn composed somewhere between the 10th and 13th centuries, with its likely author being Saint Adalbert of Prague. Though originally a liturgical hymn, it soon evolved into a battle chant used by Polish warriors, and was chanted on the 15th of July 1410 during the Battle of Grunwald by Polish knights allied to Lithuania prior to their engagement against the Teutonic Order. Since then, it was used for centuries as a battle hymn. With this in mind, I decided to arrange and orchestrate the hymn with both aspects in mind; both as a liturgical one and a battle one. I tried to go for as historically accurate a rendition as possible for an early 14th century Polish palette: all the instruments were used at the time in Poland and are all used, to my knowledge, in accordance with historical accuracy. Central among the instruments are the hurdy-gurdy, called Lira korbowa in Polish, and the bagpipe, called Dudy or Kobza. Both are some of the most commonly heard medieval instruments in the region, and the hurdy-gurdy in Central and Eastern Europe indeed survived its Western European counterparts past the 18th century, still being used to some degree as far as the mid 1850's in countries like Poland and Ukraine whilst its use had largely died out by the 1700's in Western Europe. Another peculiar instrument is the Jaw harp, which I've heard time and time again in medieval reconstructions of Carpathian, Ukrainian, Polish and other countries' music in the region. Much of the basis for my choice of instrumentation was the Polish band Jar, which I recommend you check out if you're interested in medieval Polish music. Lyrics in Old Polish: Bogurodzica dziewica, Bogiem sławiena Maryja! U twego syna Gospodzina Matko zwolena*, Maryja, Zyszczy nam, spuści nam! Kyrie eleison! *Note that I changed the melodic phrasing of the words "matko zwolena" for my own interpretation, but most versions won't phrase it that way. Many other words were phrased differently for my own interpretation, keep that in mind. Lyrics in English: Virgin, Mother of God, God-famed Mary! Ask Thy Son, our Lord, God-named Mary, To have mercy upon us and hand it over to us! Kyrie eleison! (in Greek)
One little thing. "Kobza" is not bagpipe, this is modern mistake. "Kobza" is string instrument. Only "Dudy" are nagpipe. Mistake probably comes from.fakt, that "dudy podhalańskie" (form of bagpipe) is commonly called "Koza" which means goat.

Not only, all Poles remember 1410 and 1683 and many other occasions that this hymn was sung - always a capella! and chorally. Ty nas dzierżysz, jak w więzieniu, w twej potężnej sile.
Taki bojak godzien rządzić całym światem Bożym,
Który garstką umie zwalczyć nieprzyjaciół tyle.
Chociaż cesarz wszystkie wojska na ciebie uzbroi,
Ciebie jednak nie powstrzyma prawica niczyja.
Królowanie i cesarstwo takiemu przystoi,
Naszą dumę upokorzy i zuchwalstwo skarci,
I po wrogach pokonanych swój tryumf odprawi,
I wypędzi nas z ojczyzny, jak jesteśmy warci.
On wojuje z poganami, jako Niebios plaga,
Stąd mu zawsze do zwycięstwa sam Bóg dopomaga,
In latin :
"Boleslaue, Boleslaue, dux gloriosissime,
Numquam cesar sibi bello resistere poterit.
Nobis vero iuste illatam iniuriam."

Beautiful song! I also love the artwork.
I just recommended Bogurodzica and found it already done. Thanks a lot. Your channel deserves more appreciation. Excellent work!
Sacred.. another masterpiece ! ! !
Thanks alot!
As a Pole I say it’s a certified polish hood classic
Holy moly! You sang it!? No way... Your pronunciation is so good! Anyway, Im from Poland and I love it! Thank you so much for great piece of music.
Thanks alot! I learned Polish a little bit in 2015 so it was easy to remember the pronunciation; it's one of my favourite Slavic languages :)
@@faryafarajiIt is nice that you like Polish. Greetings and best wishes to you
Ps. Your music is great👏👏👏👏👏👏
Beautiful rendition :D !
Vivat Sarmatia !
I just happened to stumble upon your channel and saw you do a lot of covers and I was overjoyed to find this gem, I will say this is an interpretation I haven't heard yet and it's INCREDIBLE. Hats off to you, the pronunciation is great, you did an amazing job! 👏
Absolutely epic combination of your baritone voice +10, the distinctive percussion, hurdy gurdy, lute-like instrument that I hear and cathedralesque echo effect.
Nothing but love for Poland from a Texan! 🤠
As long their will be living polish people the spirit of poland will never die
I'm Polish woman, thank You for this, it's really great performance 🙏
As a Pole. I thank you

Beautiful song ❤🇵🇱❤
My buddy and I are recreating this historical battle (Grunwald / Tannenberg) on a tabletop wargaming table with miniatures.
I believe I'll surprise him by playing this masterpiece while we roll dice.
An unexpected delight. As always I will terrorize my discord servers with your excellent composition :)

Grunwald 1410 👋🙏💪👍🤘🇵🇱🇵🇱🇵🇱
Just a small instrument names detail - Kobza is a lute instrument, Koza (also means goat) is the other name for bagpipes
Yes, I just wanted to write about it, it's good that someone noticed it.
Listening to this after Russian mussiles hit Poland. Im half Polish. Niech zyje Polska!
After Ukrainian missiles you mean?!!😂😂😂😂😂. The easiest and the weakest mindset to manipulate is that of a nationalist. I think you’ve been eating to much dog food from NATO. Now you hop and skip as your masters tell you.

Man, this piece just begs to be used in Grunwald Symphony!! Having listened to " Manzikert" and "Nineveh" I'm sure you would nail Grunwald as well
The vocals are so peacful, but they also make me join the Winged Hussars
Bon dieu.
This is just otherworldly

Feel so proud to be Poles. Greeting all slavic people!! One love!!

Wow..I am Polish and for the first time I hear this enhanced version of the song. By the way, we still sing it in our churches during Mary's festivities.
Listening that during the last battle against Teutonic Order on the last episode of Hedwidge campaign in AOE II DE... So epic !
Impresive.
Thank you for everything you do!
Dear Farya, thank you for you passion, love, time, efforts. Your opera is extremely important today when the world is going to become global and unified, loosing unbrakable values and national treausures. Thank you for helping people to feel the roots and unended support of ancestors. Watching this video I've got a thought that Ukrainian troops (army of Rus as a part of Grand Duchy of Lithuania) also participated in the battle and thus may be it would be interesting for you to create an opera based on old Ukrainian music tradition which is very particular and rich. Few links below just to feel the parfume. Warmest regards and thank you again.

As a Pole I am delighted. Wonderful arrangement and performance. And this is an exceptionally difficult song. Congratulations :)
The description is also excellent. I would only add that for a time, Bogurodzica was also used as our national anthem.
Awesome art, Farya. Thanks!
