Is Blanton's the Best Buffalo Trace Mash Bill #2 Bourbon? Bottom's Up!

  • We're putting four bourbons up against each other from Buffalo Trace Distillery's famed Mash Bill 2 to see which will reign supreme. Can Ancient Ancient Age 10 Star hold a candle to perennial unicorns Elmer T. Lee Bourbon, Rock Hill Farms Bourbon, and Blanton's Single Barrel Bourbon? Welcome to Bottom's Up! We'll pit a bottom shelfer, a mid-shelfer, and a top shelf whiskey against each other, all from the same distillery, to see if it's really worth it to shell out your hard earned cash for higher-priced whiskey.

    I get Julie on the whole “idk, I just like this one better” bit. Sometimes you don’t care to pick up notes. Your brain just goes “eehhh I just like that one more.” Fair play

    Hello. I am an Ancient Age girl all the way. Great price and taste. Next time I have a cocktail with someone i'm gonna tell them the bourbon has high level quasi intensity with deep notes of ripe blackberry. I think they will be impressed. These videos teach me a lot as an entry level connoisseur

    Ive been fortunate to find AAA over the years. I get the large 1.75L bottle. I bought one a few years ago. Then, a few months ago my local place had them. I bought one, and went back the next week for another.

    Love it when the bottom shelf is competitive with the big boys! And the price that you paid..never seen the Rock Hill at all. Thanks

    Only ever seen RHF and ETL at crazy-ass prices - over $400 for each one! Even a pour at some bars in my area are over $50, so needless to say I haven't ever had any of those...
    I have "regular" Ancient Age and for $10 it's... fine. I'll use it as a mixer or for marinades or something. I have 1 open bottle of Blanton's and 1 back-up based purely on luck at BevMo last year, and it's pretty good but it doesn't blow me away. I have many others that I like better and are easier to find, so I probably won't replace them when they're gone.

    I did this line up with RHF, ETL, Blanton's and Handcock's Reserve. They finished in that order. Great line up to me. Great show guys.

    15-20 years ago, I could get Elmer T Lee and Rock Hill Farms for $25 and always on the shelf. These days, only see them on channels like yours. 😢

    Fun video! For someone who claims Buffalo Trace as their favorite distillery, of the four of these I’ve only had the Blanton’s, but that’s only because they’re all hard to find around here.

    • @TheBourbonVan

      They're so hard to find everywhere! We've been super lucky to find all 4 of these in less than 3 years, but then again, we spend a little time in liquor stores...

    They call ancient ancient age baby Blanton's. There are rumors that it is Blanton's that didn't meet the flavor profile so bottled as ancient ancient age instead. As you said it is also difficult to find nowadays. At one point I could buy the 10 year for about $15 after taxes 🤦‍♂️

    Mavis was like the bonus content buried in the end credits in a Marvel movie ;) I have blinded the AAA & Blanton's (Only two I have) to others and they were a lot more competitive than expected. AAA even favored with someone. Great bottom shelfer in my book and fairly easy to find around here. Just a quick trip down the rowed...oh wait, sorry...road. My bad ;) Cheers!

    I've only ever tasted/owned Elmer and Blantons, so of course I did A/B with them and chose Blantons. I find the mouthfeel of Elmers to be superior, however, inferior in balance (sweet / oak), mid-palate and finish.
    I passed on Rock Hill before I knew "I should buy this one", even after a wonderful human being at Bud's Liquors in Nashville encouraged me to buy it ...for $49. At the time, too rich for me.

    So Elmer T Lee and AAA10 are interchangeable? I don't disagree but its just hilarious the secondary prices for Elmer when its not that great....

    • @TheBourbonVan
      @TheBourbonVan  ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha, not quite interchangeable, but pretty close. ETL certainly has a bit of complexity comparatively, but it certainly isn't worth the crazy prices many people would pay for it.

  • @andrewbutler7681
    @andrewbutler7681 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I can see why you would put them in the order you did... and that's why my order would be different! "Spicy" is NOT something I'm looking for in whiskey. My favourite of the four is Elmer T. Lee (of which I do have a bottle), second Ancient Ancient Age (also have a bottle), third Blanton's (specifically Gold, rather than other versions; never purchased anyway) and Rock Hill Farms last (though not by much; also never bought).

    I'm finally testing these along with you. It's so weird how the aromas change after I've tasted them, though. It's also weird that before I tasted them I liked the aromas from the Ancient Ancient Age the best, but that doesn't translate over to the tastes. Your palates are so much better than mine, but on the tastes, I get the same final order as Phil, but I found only a tiny difference between the top two. I'd happily sip either of the top two if I found them at MSRP, but I wouldn't overpay for either. Yesterday, when I was buying the Baker's 7, another guy in the store said one of the Raleigh stores had Blanton's the day before. Oh well, guess you have to have great timing and lots of luck. But frankly, that Baker's was fantastic last night so no complaints. It's my first real experience with a JB product and at $60 here, I may be looking to pick up a back-up bottle. Thank you both so much for sharing this flight with me.

    • @TheBourbonVan
      @TheBourbonVan  ปีที่แล้ว
