I found the Gerber spine to be a piece of junk that knife went to my junk knife bin. My Kansbol lives in my bug out bag.
I have both of these, not sure which one I prefer, but you are missing on the Spine's sheath. That notch on the blade isn't for a ferro rod. The notches on the top and bottom of the blade are for retention in the sheath! You do not have the knife fully inserted in the sheath, if you did it will not shake out. You can see about an eight inch of blade between the handle and the sheath in your review. The knife should insert far enough in the sheath so you can't read the numbers on the blade. Then those notches engage bumps in the sheath and the knife WILL NOT SHAKE OUT!. I'm not a huge fan of this knife, it's OK, but I do really like the sheath when used properly. It is actually one of the better sheaths I've used. Sorry, but that is a flaw in your review. Thanks
I got one today and noticed that also that the knife was not in the sheath correctly. If its locked in correctly it will not fall out and you can not see the top of the steel in the blade when its locked in correctly. It needed to go in the sheath deeper to lock in.

Love seeing the bro science catchin on! The Kansbols 12c27 is actually a lower carbon steel than the 7cr (0.6% in the mora vs 0.65 - .75 in the spine) but Mora really seem to take care with getting a great treatment. My test results are similar with 12c27 having a noticeable, but not huge increase over the alphabet type china steels. But its a lot to do with treatment, I suspect.
Also love the irony of the knife actually called the Spine having inferior spark throwing!

My man.... higher carbon blades are KNOWN to be easier to sharpen. That’s quite legitimately one of their main selling points. Yes it’s a harder steel but it chips a lot easier as a result of that hardness. This causes it to both dull and sharpen quicker than lower carbon steels.

I was given the Gerber Spine for Father's Day. Honed it out of the package to paper slicing sharp, but it just wouldn't hold an edge. Vigorously sharpened starting with a course diamond stone and worked my way down to an extra fine stone and finished on a leather strop. Made a world of difference. Sometimes during heat treat the steel at the cutting edge loses too much carbon which softens the steel. You have to grind away the soft steel to get back to the good steel that can hold an edge. Not a great knife, but for the price it isn't bad either. I prefer a flat grind over Scandi for general camping use. A couple of passes on a diamond stone sharpened the back so it does a better job of throwing sparks and you're go to go. For the occasional camper/backpacker it will get you by.. You do have to make sure you fully seat the knife in the sheath for the retention system to work. You can tell tell when it snaps into place. Once in, it takes some effort to remove the knife from the sheath. It isn't going to fall out.
Interesting point on the heat treat's effect. I read up on the steel and it's not "junk" so much as a modest but serviceable knife steel. I like the Spine's general look, it has a nice heft to it, the sheath works impeccably if you push the damn thing in until it clicks, come on, people. And I don't like scandis in general or that weird hybrid grind in particular. So taking the Kansbol out of the equation, the Spine is a fine casual-use outdoors knife for the price. You can open a package of hot dogs or sharpen up a marshmallow stick. Clean a trout, slice a tomato. Sure, I've got a few high-end knives like most knife nuts, but if I'm out for the day or overnight and I'm probably going to need to cut stuff I'll be glad I've got this cheapie Gerber knife.
While I really like the backpack clip option for the Gerber, I am more focused on the sparks the Kansbol can throw.
A simple regrind with a file and you'll get just as good sparks imo

Is it just me, but you seemed to let the mora go a little bit more on the rope cutting than the gerber. You were straight up sawing at the end with the mora where as the gerber you went back and forth 2 times and were like Imma call it 67 I’m just sawing now 😂😂

I just love the overall shape of the Spine 's blade and handle plus its simple sheath. Well, I already have the Kansbol, though.
I own a Mora Companion and have enjoyed using it for years. That said, I prefer a full tang knife and usually carry one when I go out in the field. One I use for heavier work the other for any fine work.
Not that I need another knife but you can't go wrong with a Mora!

I' ve broken 2 mora knives. I have a buck 119 special that I've had for 30 years, put it through way more abuse than those shitty Mora knives and it's still sharp as fuck and holds an edge well.

About that spine:
The handle and the sheath with its possibility of stealth carry is priceless. Too bad it‘s badly produced. When the knife is put into the sheath it dulls the blade and you have the steel rolling over the edge. Bought another one to test, got the same problem. What i did was glueing some leather into the sheath to prevent the knife from getting dull. But I mean, come on guys, you can do better
Since i already have the Kansbul, I'm going to pick that one, but I do like some of the features on the Spine (just not the spine itself). Great comparison!!

I too can not stand Gerber, But I have to say the Gerber StrongArm is a beast I have grown to love that knife. With this said it is the only Gerber product I like.
kosys gerber only makes good US made military stuff. Anything else (maybe besides the US made Gator series) is complete garbage.

The mora is better for bush crafting, but the gerber is a great camp prep and food prep knife. The gerber also can make some decent feather sticks
Rubber handles are amazing. Super grippy and super comfortable.

I like the Gerber but its problems making sparks is a deal breaker for me.
Just take a file and sharpen it. It takes a minute and barely any tool ffs
I’ve had two Gerbers in the past. They didn’t hold an edge and they were hard to put an edge back on.
For me, it's the Kansbol all day long. In fact, after you and Chris Tanner reviewed it, I went and got one (with the multi sheath). Best value for money I've seen for a knife in this catagory.

That Gerber sheath is pretty trick.
I love more the companion spark, but I got the Kansbol with green and orange handles too. Every knife has its own character.

I need to check out the Kansbol. You can get a SCHF 51 or 52 for around $30 (although heavier duty than those tested). Can also get a SCHF 42d for around $40 - great camp knife. All 3 use 1095.
Great comparison! I'd love to see Gerber actually make a scandi or convex designated bushcraft knife. Why they haven't done this yet is beyond me. Atb Sean

You can look for it yourself, Im saving specifics for friends and family.
I always hate to see when a gerber nowadays gets a bad review because they have done so much better so this product will cause people to say "ha gerber baby food sucks" or whatever. Im tired of hearing it especially after touring their factory. They are a great brand. And I hope people stop treating them like a joke because gerber is trying. Anyway, Great review man!!!
@jcoolG19 true, but that five dollar knife, (the mini paraframe) is also their best selling product period. So why get rid of it from a business standpoint if its making money. I also see about 70% of people carrying one around where i live. And people who work with cheap stuff dont mind it. Its knife snobs that i dont like. But you are right. Gerber makes a good knife for the price

Back in the 70's and early 80's, Gerber were it and a bit. They lost their way, and while they were floundering, other companies surpassed them.

Kansbol all day. There's simply no part of its design that doesn't work well for hiking and camping (and fishing for that matter). Even though you have often said you don't like the dual grind, you've never said it doesn't DO what it is designed to - permit both clean slicing for food prep with the full flat section and offer optimal wood carving with the Scandi portion. Unless I've missed something, your complaint is that you don't like how it looks. I'll take funny looking and functional all day.
It looks like a pain to sharpen, is my complaint. It reminds me of a Japanese single-bevel boning knife I've got that actually has two bevels going on on the one side of the knife. I don't use it because I can't decide if I want to just simplify the bevel or try to figure out how the factory grind is supposed to work.
@@mfreeman313 It's actually very easy to sharpen. The grinds are different, but the relief edge is the same all along the blade.

Not owning either of these two. I do have a Mora Classic.
I hate synthetic handles on fixed blades so neither of these are for me.
But I like the Mora more. The blade shape of the Spine doesn't enthuse me, the sheath weirds me out, and I've worked with that steel before and I hate it.
One more thought on the Mora a hose clamp will make an excellent thumb ramp

Thank you for your review, i am not trying to rant a lot, but my two thoughts about the knives:
i have the kansbol right now, waiting for the spine. the kansbol is great for its indoor (kitchen) and outdoorskills (carving maby battoning). but the sheath and the dangler option is so loose, that you can lose the knife very easily. im am afraid to carry it on my belt und store it in the backpack. when it comes to cutting i can not tell how the gerber performs, but i know it has issues with the sheat, as it sits very tight, depending on the temperature around.
i am not sure but i think you did not put the knife in the sheath right as there is a little gap between handle and sheath (about 11:50min the text on the knife is seen).
if you push it in real hard it klicks and you will have problems getting it out.
well these are my thoughts, lets finish with my opinnion, an knife with the sheath that will not get lost and the handle that fits your hand right is the best tool, undependable if it has a better steel oder better edge retention etc.

At this size full tang not necessary as I wouldn't be spitting wood etc. Tuff choice..great brand names ..I'm edging Gerber for design , sheath more useful for me. Either one will do their job. I own both brands of different models. Nice blades
I will go with the Mora I have 4 of them the companion and heavy duty and 2 the classic series. I don't get out as much as I would like to, but I use them in food preparation and they are fantastic.
I like the Spine. This video actually makes me kinda wanna get it.
I'm taking the Spine. I like Full Tangs. Simple Flat Grind. The Tip looks Stronger than the Kansbol. The handle looks like it was stolen from the Condor Hudson Bay, which I love. The notch on top looks like it was designed to fit the Ferro Rod that is attached to a Doan's Bar. Knife spines can be Flattened. Dave Canterbury even did a Video on how to put on a Burr to aid in Spark Throwing. The sheath looks like it was a designed to go over a US Military Pistol Belt, or 2 rows of MOLLE/PALS webbing. Or put a small Niteize S-Binder through the Steel Loop and attach it to a Good Carabineer and you have a Dangler. And yes, I have Moras and Used them. Good Knives. But this one MAY replace them. Got to do my own Testing, of course. Thanks again and Take Care.

"Slightly" disappointed in this comparison. Have both. The Mora is in another league.
If I had to choose it would be the Gerber full tang knife as I like that style most of all when it comes to survival knives. I have several survival knives and most have full tangs and the one which I will be wearing with my backpack is a full tang knife and it seem to be great for what I will be using it for. The biggest problem with the Mora style knife is that it is not a full tang knife.
Try breaking a Mora. Lol. You won't.
To me a Survival knife is longer and beefier than a hunting knife. These two reviewed seem like food prep knives for when you're not at home.

Btw, the Gerber blade looks like the CRKT/Greg Lightfoot M-1 from back in the day.
I would go with the Gerber because I like that type of blade.
Plus, aside from the low-retention aspect of it, the sheat can be worn on the waist belt of packs.

The SGT FU Channel the garberg has moras best steels used on there blades plus its the toughest mora you can buy it’s the only full tang mora definitely my favorite mora other than that there isn’t much different mostly handle materials or whether it’s carbon or stainless and what the sheath will be but if u want something cheaper than The garberg there bushcraft black is a great knife great handle blade and spine.

The SGT FU Channel I believe the bushcraft black and garberg are some of there thicker blades but there all fairly thin and both have a sharper spine than the companion
The SGT FU Channel the bushcraft Black I believe is a little longer the garberg is thicker but about the same length but I’d double check the n a knife site I don’t own the black but I do own the companion the robust and the garberg hands down the garberg but it’s $80 the bushcraft Black is around $40 prices keep falling from there
The SGT FU Channel if u looking for something even cheaper I’d go with the cold steel Finn hawk German 4116 steel fairly identical to what mora uses easy to sharpen gets really sharp holds an edge fairly decent same sheath u would get with most moras really sharp spine comfy and grippy handle great Scandinavian grind for 20 something bucks.
Everyone knows Moras are good, but that Gerber is an interesting tool with a unique sheath. Looks to be worth considering.

I just got the schrade 42d. For half the price of the gerber. Maybe I'll wait a few years till it gets below $20.
That should be a very good knife. I had the 42 and sold it to a buddy of mine. Regret it in a way.

Just spend the extra money and get a Joker Campero. Get a good fixed blade knife that you actually like.
Normally the only Gerber products I'll invest my money in are their multitools (MP 400,600, & Centerdrives) but I managed to snag a BLADE HQ sale for the Spine and their spoon for only $24. For something that only slightly underperforms to the Kansbul for essentially $12 you cant beat it.
to me for $35 Mora Kansbol is a 9.5/10 and that flat Gerberg is a 3.5/10

That's what gets me is they don't do left-handed options but as a lefty I tend to think with the right side of my brain😉👍
I feel like you can almost tell by looking at them the mora is going to keep a better edge.
Or buy a carbon AND a Sandvik Companion. Sharpen the spines on both and you have perfection that is better than either of these knives at the same price for two.
I for one prefer the Mora Kansbol.
Far better for finer work working and general camp chores. Just more versatile.
I would have to feel the handle on both, that would be the deciding factor for me.

I think s30v is great for sparking because of the super hard vanadium carbides.

Never had a Gerber 7cr blade hold an edge. Mora holds an edge well for what it is. I imagine a Companion would have competed well against the Spine. Wonder how a Buck Maxlite would have done?
The Morakniv Kansbol is still the best $35 knife ever!

Sorry to tell you but the notch on the gerber is not for fire steel.. the notchbis how it locks into the sheath..pretty sure you have better sparks if you would have used the straight edge rather then the notch

I like "bushcraft" knives. But, bushcraft isn't all I want a knife I carry into the field to accomplish. I'd like to see tests of bushcraft knives include some processing of animals. Maybe cleaning a fish or a squirrel (even a deer). I guess what I am saying is that any knife I carry into the field needs to do more than just bushcraft tasks. Thanks.

Mora 3.5oz, Gerber 5.1oz, based on Blade HQ. Makes a difference to me.
I have a Alfa Benetti in 7cr17MoV and edge retention is pretty good. Apparently it got a good heat treatment.
I'd opt for the Mora which has a better sheath which doesn't say much for the Gerber. Also I have plenty of knives made in China but given the choice I'd rather my money go to a U.S. company and barring that I'd opt for a US friendly country. And that handle on the Gerber? ..... No,just absolutely no.
For $10 more I'd go with the Schrade SCHF42D, which is a much better bargain for what you get. And the SCHF55 is $35. It has a shorter blade but is a great deal.
It's hard when trying to do two things: 1. Save money shopping bargain economy knives. (It's a huge field) and 2. Get a great knife for using; period. I like that several budget knives still go for a great heat treat & hardness with strength and I like that many budget knives are thin on the spine to be more slicey and lighter weight. Honestly budget knives can be overdeveloped handles on whats almost a kitchen knife and include a sheath. It's funky. I'd rather have 3 highend reliable knives with extra performance than a plethora of knives that I would never cry over if I lose or break.
