On June 22, 2024, HE Thor Chetha, Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology, accompanied by HE Technical Leaders of Ministries and Departments, led a delegation of the Prime Minister's Information Working Group led by HE Kouch Veng Srun, Secretary of State of the Office of the Commission. Minister inspects the progress of the Irrigation and Flood Reduction Development Project (IDFMP) in Banteay Meanchey Province, which has received concessional financing from the Republic of Korea.
Please be informed that the Irrigation and Flood Reduction Development Project (IDFMP) has received water from streams and rivers along the Cambodia-Thailand border, potentially covering 11 communes of 4 cities and districts in Banteay Meanchey province. Poipet, Serei Sophorn, Malai and Ochrov districts.
The main activities of the project include: 1) Rehabilitation of 6 main canals, 92.65 km 2) Construction of 3 reservoir dams (Veang Heng Reservoir, Pong Rong and Kanseng Reservoir) with a total length of 20.36 km Meters and restore the three reservoirs that can store about 22.8 million cubic meters of water; and 3) build a total of 208 art buildings. As of June 2024, the project progress has reached 46.97%.
On that occasion, HE Minister and his team inspected the actual progress of the main locations of the project: 1) Veang Heng Reservoir with a reservoir area of ​​157.7 square kilometers, a dam with a length of 6.23 km with a maximum storage capacity. 4 million meters and 2) towel pool with a pool area of ​​760.5 square kilometers, a dam length of 7.12 kilometers and a maximum storage capacity of 15.3 million cubic meters.
The Minister stated that the development of irrigation system and flood reduction in Banteay Meanchey province is to increase agricultural productivity, reduce the impact of natural disasters and increase the efficiency of water resources, ensure adequate water supply for agricultural production. Use in daily life as well as serve interdisciplinary.
At the same time, the Minister added that this project also reduces the risk of flash floods in the region, especially the floods across Thailand and the drought, which is part of improving the lives of The people will promote economic growth in accordance with the Pentagon Strategy, the first phase of the Royal Government of the 7th legislature under the energetic leadership of Samdech Moha Bovathibodi Hun Manet, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia.
It should be noted that the Banteay Meanchey Irrigation and Flood Reduction Development Project will take 54 months to build, starting in December 2021 and scheduled to be completed in June 2026. The project has the capacity to irrigate a total area of ​​nearly 20,000 hectares and has a population of 42,213 families.
