I used super glue to put it back together, but make sure it doesn't leak out onto the visible parts when pressing it down to hold, as it'll leave some white residue that's almost impossible to remove without scratching the paint/frame. Solid review and well made video! I have had my Capra (aluminium) for about 3 months and 25ish rides and I can say that I agree with your assessment. I bought the base model because I wanted aluminium and they only offered it in that trim level. I have swapped the rear shock out for a CaneCreek DB Coil and upgraded the Yari fork up to the Lyric ultimate spec. It works great as a mullet and really slays steep terrain in that setup. I did have to glue the frame and chainstay protection back on. Other than that I have no complaints. It rides as plush and damp as a DH bike but pedals well uphill with the climbing switch engaged.
Interesting you also had the chain stay protector issue... perhaps it’s a common problem? What glue did you use if you don’t mind me asking? Also, any thoughts on your DB Coil Shock? I don’t want to lose that “bottomless” feel you get with the spring rate rise of an air shock, but I’d love a bit more adjustability AND small bump sensitivity!
@@TheExtraCrank I fixed the chainstay protection with BSI two-part super glue. You apply the glue to the rubber piece and then spray the chainstay with the hardener solution. Still, I’m a proud YT owner and love the feel of this bike. Did you ever get an answer about re-attaching the rubber chainstay guard ?
Howard W. Glad you agree! Re the chainstay guard, I’ve had a few suggestions. Epoxy glue and zip ties seem to be the most common. I’ve actually just wrapped the loose end with gorilla tape for now, but this isn’t my permanent fix!
My chain stay is the same on my Capra, yt told me to super glue it! I am using black electrical tape as cannot really see it but the cable tie is a good idea cheers for the content
Good review! I really think it is a super nice bike! But should I take 29 or 27,5? No maybe a jeffsy, thats better for me. Or take the Trek Remedy? 180mm on 27,5 are way to big for tech Singletrail. I also wanna climb and not shutteling all the time. Never have a bottle with me on a ride so.... But now I just keep on waiting when the new ones are on the homepage and get on😃
Out of all your suggestions, I’ve only ridden the 29 Capra! I’d say if you value the descents more than the climbs, the suspension on the Capra is like nothing else I’ve ridden when it comes to rough terrain.....
Hello! Nice video. I have already ordered new bike and hopefully, it will arrive in December. What is your experiences with Fox38? I have just checked a couple of videos on youtube about creaking noises in crown area. Have you noticed also the same issue for this fork? Many thanks for feedback! Marcel
Nice in depth video thanks! I’m just getting into mountain biking (but I’m a young 47 year old - from Aberdeen too) and considering this bike as my first full susser. Looks pretty burly, how would you say it is on climbs? Thanks 🙏
Hey just a couple random questions, how did you start out mountain biking? And how do YOU overcome a fear or a never to go down a trail or go over a jump. etc? Also are there any trails in Kirkhill you would recommend?
Nathan Geddie Hey man! I think I started at about 13/14 with my Dad around the nearest trail centre at the time, Cannock Chase. Always had the bug ever since, though there have been times since then where I’ve kinda stopped for a bit and gotten back into it... As is life! I get nervous like the rest of us haha! Look before you leap, follow someone else if you can, and make a deal with yourself along the lines of “if I start my roll in, I WONT back out!” Basically, do all of your worrying and analysing BEFORE you start rolling... My favourite trail at Kirkhill is Fast Forwarder, but depending on your ability, there are a couple of drops that you need to take care on. Next favourite would be Tight As A Badgers. Difficult to get right, but super rewarding when you do! It also ‘feels’ the longest cos it’s a bit more slow and technical! Cheers
I did - but I wanted something that could do everything, and allow to progress my own skills/speed on steeper, rougher stuff, and also be a platform to develop some better jumping skills.
Hey! Great video, helped me a lot. I'm just a bit worried about climbing as it's pretty long travel bike. Do you mind sharing any of your thoughts? Now I'm riding Canyon Strive 7.0 2019 and I'm thinking of changing it for YT
Manu Leinonen Hi Manu - Sorry for the late reply here! Did you make the swap? For me, the climbing capability is pretty average. There is no full lock out on the shock which I think would make a world of difference. Also, having the shapeshifter on the Strive, I imagine that puts you in a better climbing position than the Capra, even with the flip chip set to ‘high’. Finally, the relatively slack seat tube means I have my seat quite far forward in the rails, and I have to get the nose pointed down for it to be pleasant to climb on. Al lot of this is masked by the 50t cassette which makes spinning up steep hills a slow, but non-stressful experience. I’ve never ridden a Strive, but my assumption would have been that it was a better climber than the Capra...
Hello I was thinking about buying a YT Capra 2021 Al base but I checked the canyon page and I saw that they were selling canyon torque al 6 for the same amount. What do you think I should buy? The canyon has fox 36 fork and a fox dpx2 Performance shock.
I’m pretty sure YT and Canyon pretty much match each other on value, so it probably just comes down to preference. As I say in the vid, for me, the brakes were the biggest differentiator, but for the AL versions, I’m actually not sure?! I think the Torque is a bit more ‘park/free ride’ so I don’t think it would suit me, but sure they’re all capable bikes!
Great review! I had some test rides from the recently opened YT store in Surrey (Capra 29, jeffsy 29 and a Capra 27.5). Really enjoyed all 3 bikes. Predictably jeffsy was better on the ups and flat and both capras were super confidence inspiring when it got steep and rough. My only reservation on the 29ers was on the really steep sections where I buzzed my backside on the rear wheel, no such problem on the 27.5. I’m 5.9 and all the bikes were a large. Have you had any experiences with this happening to you?
stuartdouglass01 In a word, YES! you learn the position of your rear wheel very quickly and adapt, but yeah that’s something I went through as well. Still happens from time to time, but if you are riding smooth, it’s not that dramatic when it happens to be honest. It’s a downside, but 29 is still worth it on the whole, IMO... VERY tempted to go full mullet though, which would probably fix that issue!!
khand187 climbing is a slow affair, with a lot of reliance on the 50t cassette to winch me up... maybe something to do with my fitness though 🤫 I wish there was a full lock out on the shock. I’ve also got used to the slack seat tube - this has led me to shove the seat forward on the rails and point the nose down for a bit more comfort on the long climbs.
I have the exact same problem on my 2020 Capra size large...I am also 5'10" and I feel like my weight is too far back...I feel like I bought the wrong size frame!! the only way I made it work was by pushing my seat wayyyyy forward so that at least I feel like I got some pressure on my bars
Good question! I found them ok. Very sticky which is exactly what I want. Having said that, I did notice edge grip was a bit unpredictable at higher speeds. Have since swapped to Maxxis HRs and they are better, IMO!
I'm seriously thinking about upgrading the shock to a coil. I'll be keeping the drivetrain as it is though as It still remains a climb-able bike, despite it's DH tendencies.
@@TheExtraCrank I've got the new shred 29 capra with 38 fox and coil shock, very very pleasant, you cannot be disapointed as the linkage is so progressive that even with a coil it seems bottomless!!!
I am between thos and a Ibis Ripmo AF,I am scared of Carbon and Ripmo has better suspension but I tried a Capra for 1min and was thinking it felt like a good Enduro for a jumper and felt far lighter than it's actual weight. What would you choose?
Hi, i have a yt capra cf pro 29 er 2018 modell, and with fox 36 the rc2 damper and with dpx2. I have ridden at bikepark semmering and maribor the dh line too. Now its 2 and a half year old this bike is bombproof the rear axle of the hub is loosened often not the dt axle.
@@TheExtraCrank don't they just, just don't now if I should go carbon or aluminium always had aluminium frames and heard that the carbon is abit stiff on tbe yt's and always worried that if anything breaks its harder to fix than aluminium. I'm leaving towards the shred tbh
Nice video, thanks for sharing and hope your TH-cam adventure is going OK. Do you have any regrets going for long travel and big wheels given capability of short-medium travel 29ers being so capable these days? If you fancy a comparison with a Megatower as a video idea let me know, I am local.
Thanks Craig! No regrets on the big wheels, and while the long travel is definitely not the most efficient, it’s a trade off I willingly made - I’d rather sacrifice some peddling ease for the BEST descending, as that’s the part of my ride I enjoy the most! Good idea man! Kirkhill is my most local, but will be around the ‘shire plenty over the next few weeks. How do you find the Megatower??
@@TheExtraCrank MT is really fun and has been a good ownership experience. It can climb but is not its best side. Probably a lot like the Capra. Perhaps see you on the trails sometime.
The Jeffsy looks like an incredible all rounder. I’m personally happy to sacrifice some efficiency for the DH-feel of a full blown enduro bike, but I’m probably overbiked 75% of the time.... worth it for the 25% though :)
Hi mate, hope you don't mind me asking. How was your experience with regard to delivery of the bike? How long after the "available from" date did the bike arrive? Reading tons of bad press so wanted to see how your experience was, I ordered the Capra comp 27.5 and it says available from 30th September so interested to know how long it took for yours to come. Cheers!
Hi Jack, so mine was “available now” so I’m afraid I can’t speak for the pre-order stuff, sorry! Experience with YT customer service has been good though - sent thru the spare hanger, no questions asked, and were pretty quick at replying to emails. Super frustrating having to wait though, it will be worth it!!!!
I am considering buying the base model. With your experience on your model, would you think that riding up a trail and back down would be enjoyable/ doable. Also, do you jump on it? If so, how does it feel for that.
MTB Max never ridden a Rocky Mtn so I’m probably not qualified to say!!! Good luck with your new bike purchase though!!! 🤘 What I will say is that value for money, the Capra Base is unreal!!
To be fair, this is an enduro bike, if you’re pushing it in challenging terrains a water bottle doesn’t really make sense. You wouldn’t run one on a downhill bike. Do you think you could get away with it on a bike park? Also how are the wheels holding up? Are they carbon?
Yeah good point! This has a 35mm stem I believe. My old bike was more like a 70. Think I could just about tolerate another 10/15mm reach before I’d be too stretched out, so that might be the sweet spot! 👍
Not sure on the weight. It isn’t light, but still lighter than the Orange Alpine I had a few years ago. Maybe 32lb ish? As for jumps, I think I answered that on your other question! (And I haven’t gotten any better at it since!!) 😆
Im gonna enduro race my 130/120mm bike, i am thinking about buying Capra the next year if my races go well. But im only 14 and i dont want my parents to spend so much money on it. Im gonna sell a few things that could do me like 1000€, but 1700 will be on my parents and i think thats too much. Do you think its great investment? If i sell a few of my things and then could buy the Capra Base AL? Idk if i wrote this good and understandable because im from not english speaking country.
Josh Appleton Hi Josh - never ridden the Giant so I couldn’t really say. Capra is definitely better value from a spec sheet perspective though... people do rave about the giant Maestro suspension on the other hand...
I'm thinking to change my old bike Giant Trance 26", my stile of ride is Enduro and technicals trails with many kilometers of ascending therefore I would like to know your opinion about this change.
Personally I think they’re great for long rides. Comfortable seating position, 12 speed and a 29er should be good. The downhill is where it shines though.
If the bike has 29” wheels and the flip-chip is set to ‘Low’ the geometry is almost exactly the same as if the bike has a 27.5” rear wheel and the flip-chip is set to ‘High’. Hope that makes sense?! Basically they made the bike ready to go to set up to a ‘mullet’ bike with a smaller rear wheel than front wheel.
@@TheExtraCrank on paper, what you mean with almost the same, is only half way there. I mean, the difference between having the flip chip in high and low is only 10 mm, while the radius difference between 29” and 27,5” is 18 mm. So, simply putting a 27,5” rear in a 29” bike and changing flip chip from low to high will still put the bb 8 mm lower than the bike’s normal low setting (351-8=343). In my book, this will be too low for pedaling in any rough section. Personally, I’d like to see an iteration with an extra flip chip position 8 mm higher to simply up the bike to the mullet option.
@@niklasdr Ah yes but the BB is roughly (not quite, but nearly) in the centre of the wheelbase, so the 18m drop at the rear axle is a roughly 10mm drop at the BB... exactly the same as the flip chip difference!
@@TheExtraCrank Yes, you are correct in BB being closer to center of wheelbase than the rear axle! Looking at the details, the "not quite, but nearly" (14,4 % closer to rear axle) results in 2,6 mm more BB drop. So, the Capra 29" with 170/170 suspension has a BB height of 345,4(/336,4) mm in high(/low) as a mullet versus 357/348 mm in high/low as pure 29", i.e. never overlapping. But, comparing this to a BB height of 350 mm for the 27" with 180/180 suspension and 346 mm (0,6 higher than 345,4) for the 27" with 170/170 suspension (from 2018 and 2019 for models not Pro Race), perhaps the latter means BB mullet height is just "fine". Numbers seem OK, I guess!
So 6 foot puts you right on the fence according to the YT sizing guide. All I’d say is that this bike *feels* larger than most bikes. So I’d say if your used to riding a L from a few years ago, this might feel more like an XL to you. Ultimately, it will come down to your preference for feel. The reach is pretty long on my L, so I’ve found my weight to be quite rear-biased. I’m 5’10’ and I don’t think I could really ride an XL properly... I’d tentatively say to go for L.... but it’s up to you!! Can you test ride one? Or at least swing a leg over some other brands with similar geometry to get a size feel?
I went with the XL, and i don't have a reference for XL vs L. But i feel like its a bit small for DH descents and too big for jumps. Maybe I'm just a beginner who doesn't know what I'm talking about, but i wouldn't go back and get a different one. I love my Capra comp 29
You better believe if I spent $9600+ CAD on the new 2021 Capra MX Core 4, I'd be FUMING if that chainstay protector started PEELING like that... WTF?! How is that not built INTO the frame?!? That alone has made my decision to not go ahead with the purchase
I’d probably say no. On the spectrum of MTB bikes I’ve owned, this is the least playful, but is definitely the fastest descender, and that includes a 2011 Specialized Demo downhill bike. The big wheels and long wheelbase are not exactly nimble, but it’s not like driving a truck! It’s still a mountain bike and differences between them are generally pretty subtle!
I need an xxl 29er base al capra, i look everyday for the last 6 months and when they came out i couldn't get one because they sold in two days. Im in usa and they are slacking on output. Im having faith though, fingers crossed.
Sorry to hear that. Are you sure you don’t have it? The frame can only accept an oval shock eyelet, so I don’t quite understand how you DON’T have one!
Nice video, I got a YT Jefsy a couple of years ago because of the value you mentioned and was delighted by the quality and ride of it.
Mine came with a small water bottle holder which was a surprise to me. Would have prob returned the new Capra though once realised didn’t have even that!

Howard W. Glad you agree! Re the chainstay guard, I’ve had a few suggestions. Epoxy glue and zip ties seem to be the most common. I’ve actually just wrapped the loose end with gorilla tape for now, but this isn’t my permanent fix!
Great vid! Subscribed. Considering this.
Thanks! Glad you’re along for the ride! 😃
I’ve been looking to buy either a Capra or a canyon strive and I think I’m going to go ahead with the Capra, great video 👍🏼
Ha yeah I was in that EXACT dilemma for like a month... I don’t think you can really go wrong with either, but I’m happy with my decision, on balance!
My E 13 wheels on my 2019 YT Capra didn’t handle fort William or at least the rear didn’t, switched to hope fortress and is now going well
Yeah my ‘bombproof’ comment aged like milk 😂 one rock garden after filming this, I had to swap mine for a Spank 390. A good choice 👍
awesome honest review. Thank you
Great video. Just one question, The capra 27,5 has the flip chip too??
NBE Not 100% but I don’t believe it does, no...
My chain stay is the same on my Capra, yt told me to super glue it! I am using black electrical tape as cannot really see it but the cable tie is a good idea cheers for the content
Cheers Paul. Super glue fixes everything 😆 happy Christmas 🎄
Hi, what do you think 1m80 for an XL one ? Thanks
Hello!
Cheers
The Extra Crank Thanks man, I’ll make sure to try those trails next time I go up 👍
Great video! I'm torn between the capra and the Jeffsey, did you ever consider it?
it’s mainly just travel differences
The rearward weight is normal for a modern enduro bike
You said 160mm travel for the rear shock?? Did you mean 170??
VERY tempted to go full mullet though, which would probably fix that issue!!
can you fit the dropper fully down into the frame on all sizes?
Great video! How does the Capra climb compared to your previous bike. Thinking about a Capra, but trails by me have a fair amount of climbing. t.i.a.
khand187 climbing is a slow affair, with a lot of reliance on the 50t cassette to winch me up... maybe something to do with my fitness though 🤫
I wish there was a full lock out on the shock.
Rotate the bars forward, just a few degrees will make a difference.
What do u think about the weight of the bike tough in playfulness?
What would you rate it’s jumping ability out of ten being the best
Is the bike light?
I’ve have heard the e*13 tyres getting given lots of stick. How do you find them?
Good question! I found them ok. Very sticky which is exactly what I want. Having said that, I did notice edge grip was a bit unpredictable at higher speeds. Have since swapped to Maxxis HRs and they are better, IMO!
I'm thinking of getting it, but thinking between Yt Capra Pro Al or Canyon torque 6. Which one do you think is better for the price.
A finaminal review love my Capra yep the chain stay protecter always peels off I just wrap in in some 3m tape (thick tape)
* Phenomenal
how long does it take to ship it to your house?
I would get a Capra and throw a marzocci 58, coil in the back, and a Gx dh drivetrain and make it my park/shuddle bike
@crash possibility / Change front tire. Those e13's loose traction...
They’re honestly not bad. But I’ll be back on trusty High Rollers very soon!
I want one but I hate all the colours. I always say... maybe next years will look nicer lol.
I love the green you can get on the pro 👍
I'm thinking of getting the capra shred or capra pro both in 27.5 so watching this helps
You can’t go wrong with that choice! The 38s on the Shred look sooo good!!
@@TheExtraCrank don't they just, just don't now if I should go carbon or aluminium always had aluminium frames and heard that the carbon is abit stiff on tbe yt's and always worried that if anything breaks its harder to fix than aluminium. I'm leaving towards the shred tbh
Does this bike have a lockout
Greetings from Greece my friend!!very nice videos!!I want to bye the capra shred what is your opinion?
Simon's MTB channel great value proposition. If it had been available when I ordered mine, I’d have got it...
@@TheExtraCrank thanks my friend..finally I bought a norco 🙂!!
I’m on the fence between jeffsy pro 29 or Capra pro race 29. The trails here are mostly climb so that’s what is making me lean towards jeffsy.
Love the vid. Solid.
Cheers 🍻
For the protectors, use epoxy
I am considering buying the base model. With your experience on your model, would you think that riding up a trail and back down would be enjoyable/ doable. Also, do you jump on it? If so, how does it feel for that.
i wouldn't say enjoyable, but it is doable
Hey man! What bike do you think I should get. The rocky mountain slayer 29 allow, or the yt capra AL base. Thanks!
I suggest getting a slightly longer stem to get your weight forward!
Yeah good point! This has a 35mm stem I believe. My old bike was more like a 70. Think I could just about tolerate another 10/15mm reach before I’d be too stretched out, so that might be the sweet spot! 👍
You would be surprised how much a few mm will make. Try and 40-50mm ish
45mm are rare but could be the sweet spot
How much does it weigh in at and is it good at jumps?
Not sure on the weight. It isn’t light, but still
lighter than the Orange Alpine I had a few years ago. Maybe 32lb ish? As for jumps, I think I answered that on your other question! (And I haven’t gotten any better at it since!!) 😆
I have a strange question but what is the leght of the handlebar
MH Geox Not a strange question at all! 780mm length on the Size L. Dunno if it’s the same for all sizes 🤷♂️
@@TheExtraCrank ok thanks
@@TheExtraCrank it is all i wanna know because i wear size L too on the comp model
I don’t know if I missed it or not but what model of the bike is it
It’s a 2020 YT Capra 29 COMP 👍
wow. Amazing review. Most of the colors are sold out!
Hey do you think the YT Capra is better than a Giant reign let me know what you think
Agree with Conors comment here. I would recommend 👍 Enjoy whatever you choose though :)
The core 4 looks way better than Santa Cruz and is better that yeti
What did you mean with the comment on mullet bike?
I’m 6 foot about 180lbs and really going back and forth between sending a large or xl. What would you recommend?
Btw, I'm 6'2" 225lbs
You better believe if I spent $9600+ CAD on the new 2021 Capra MX Core 4, I'd be FUMING if that chainstay protector started PEELING like that... WTF?! How is that not built INTO the frame?!? That alone has made my decision to not go ahead with the purchase
Would you say this bike is playful? I’m thinking about getting the 27.5 Capra Base. I like playful bikes so do you think I’d like this?
I’d probably say no. On the spectrum of MTB bikes I’ve owned, this is the least playful, but is definitely the fastest descender, and that includes a 2011 Specialized Demo downhill bike. The big wheels and long wheelbase are not exactly nimble, but it’s not like driving a truck! It’s still a mountain bike and differences between them are generally pretty subtle!
Use a magic eraser to get of anything on the frame
How tall are you? Are you one of those short guys who bought a 29r xxl leaving none for us 6'6" men haha
Yup
I need an xxl 29er base al capra, i look everyday for the last 6 months and when they came out i couldn't get one because they sold in two days. Im in usa and they are slacking on output. Im having faith though, fingers crossed.
I love these bikes
get a fidlock bottle to put on top of the toptube!!
Great suggestion - I’m going to experiment in the new year - might make a vid on it... if I do, I’ll reference this comment!!! 👍 happy Christmas 🎄
@@TheExtraCrank thanks you too!!
Anyone else receive the bike without the flip chip option?
Sorry to hear that. Are you sure you don’t have it? The frame can only accept an oval shock eyelet, so I don’t quite understand how you DON’T have one!
