      USB = protocol
      Thunderbolt = protocol
      Type C = connector type
      Both protocols can use type C connectors
      Speed depends on the protocol used.
      speed(Thunderbolt protocol) > speed(USB protocol)

      It's not.
      Thunderbolt 3 supports video output (HDMI/DidplayPort equivalent or using adapters) and INCLUDES USB 3.1 support.
      So basically, Some Type C ports are USB and others are Thunderbolt. That being said, all Type C connectors support the USB protocol because Thunderbolt ports can do standard USB.

    If you really want to be confused at this point, be aware that a USB C plug only refers to the connection. It may or may not always have the maximum speed and power it is capable of. In other words, you can have a USB C plug that only delivers USB 2.0 capability. What's worse, manufactures don't reveal this. So if you really need the maximum throughput and power USB -C, be sure you check with the product manufacturer before you buy.

    Made perfect sense to me. I just summarized. Type C is faster than all other previous USB types ((Universal Serial Bus) small connectors) that came before, except for Thunderbolt, which is 40 Mb/second. That means you can download a long movie in seconds. It's easier to understand if you anchor your understanding to something that you already know.
    USB 1.0/Low-Speed: 1.5 Megabits per second (Mbps)
    USB 1.1/Full-Speed: 12 Mbps.
    USB 2.0/Hi-Speed: 480 Mbps.
    USB 3.0/SuperSpeed: 5 Gbps.
    USB 3.1/SuperSpeed: 10 Gbps.
    USB Thunderbolt 3: 40 Gbps.
    This means Thunderbolt 3 will need about five or six seconds to load a typical, compressed two-hour movie.

  • @PinchTune
    @PinchTune 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Haha. The comments on here. I got it all. Great explanation. I don't blame the people that ended up all confused. It isn't your fault. The people that make all these connector decisions where obviously high and made all this more complicated than it should've been. The bottom line is this: A Thunderbolt 3 port is a USB-C connector port than can take most popular protocols and run them based on their limitations, but not the other way around - A Thunderbolt device will not work in USB-C 3.1. A USB-C cable is not the same as a Thunderbolt 3 cable even if they look the same. That's basically the gist of it.

    • @designertjp-utube
      @designertjp-utube 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Okay. And I figured this new sudden sharing protocol happened because *Apple* ran out of Fame, Popularity, Funds, and a sudden loss of support & favor with nefarious China (who's about to let *Huawei* run wild) as they attempted to put Thunderbolt way out on it's own _Proprietary Island_ . Therefore Apple may have decided to play ball and get along with *USB-C* .

    Jesus was born to a virgin, turned water to wine, taught, healed the sick, raised the dead, casted out demons, walked on water, and calmed the storm, among many other things. He was killed, and three days later He rose from the dead. Forty days later He ascended into heaven where He sits at the right hand of the Father. He is returning very soon, but before He does, Satan, the devil, is coming to pretend to be Jesus. Satan is an angel, and he will have certain supernatural powers with which to try to fool everyone. He will, for example, be able to make fire come down from heaven in the sight of men. He will only be on earth a short time before the real King of Kings, Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, returns. When the real Jesus comes we will all be transformed into our spiritual bodies at the same moment. Jesus came to offer forgiveness of sins and eternal life to anyone who believes and calls on His precious name.
    For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; - Romans 3:23
    For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. - Romans 6:23
    For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. - John 3:16-18
    The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it. - Proverbs 10:22

    TL:DR: USB-C is the connector. USB 3.0, 3.1 Gen 1 and Gen 2 can run on the old connector or the new USB-C connector. Thunderbolt 3 is a totally separate proprietary interface (NOT USB) that happens to use the USB-C connector. Your board needs to have a dedicated Thunderbolt chip on it to support it. Apple computers have this, but very few PC motherboards/laptops have it. USB is slow or average speed, Thunderbolt is insane speed.

    Type C = A type of physical connector
    USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt 3 can both be implemented into Type C connector depending on manufacturers. Macbooks for example use type C for both USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt 3 connections. Some other lower end laptops usually come with a Type C connector that only supports USB 3.0 which results in slower speeds when compared to Macbooks' Type C connector. Hope that clears things up for you guys.

      Not really. To my mind, and I suspect to most commoners, USB Type-C is ostensibly the elongated, pill shaped connector while USB 3.0 is most commonly found on peripherals like USB drives. I find all the standards quite unnecessarily obfuscating, to say nothing of Apple's own implementation of their Thunderbolt technology, past and present. It used to be very clearly defined between mainstream ports and Apples. We had USB and Apple had Firewire. Quite clearly defined and distinguishable but the arrival of Lightning and Thunderbolt really brough along with it unnecessarily complicated and visually confusing standards.

    Great progression with the video, showing from the beginning and building up from there. BUT you skirted around the question I wanted answered.
    USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 use the same connectors. Does this mean the physical USB-C cable would support Thunderbolt 3? Or is the Thunderbolt 3 (despite the same connector) Cable something entirely different?
    So in short, can a Thunderbolt 3 OUT (from PC) be connected to a Thunderbolt 3 Hub (IN -i.e. AKiTiO Thunder3 Dock) using a standard male-to-male USB-C Cable? or do you require a specific Cable?

    From 3:15 to 3:26 in the video it talks about ... "If you connected a Thunderbolt 3 to a USB 3.1 device, like a USB hub, the downchain trim of the USB 3.1 device is limited to the USB protocol, there's no way to go back up. " What exactly does this mean? ...and is it saying that it physically changes the device permanently? ...Anybody????

    • @AppleInsider

      Not permanently, just with that cable attached. Because the huh is only usb, anything after it will only work at usb speeds.

      @@AppleInsider I still find it confusing. I will think on it. Wouldn't a USB hub only have worked at USB speeds anyways, Thunderbolt, No Thunderbolt? @@jasonbourne187 that’s correct. I didn’t do this particular video - they aren’t with the team anymore - but you’re right. The hub would only have usb speeds anyway. But a Thunderbolt cable can be used with a usb hub, just not at Thunderbolt speeds

Does this mean that my MacBook has it and I can plug in a second monitor with Displayport technology and it will function properly? or Does it mean my MacBook just supports Displayport and I need to use an adapter fo the second monitor to function properly? I know you're trying, Appleinsider,. Unfortunately I won't be subscribing. Please make your explanation of important new features so that everyone can understand it. Review the comments and please talk slowly and methodically about exactly what adapters are needed for which models, show the photos long enough so the viewer doesn't have to keep starting and stopping the video etc. Please run your videos past normal people before posting them, and be sure to emphasize slowly and clearly all of the obvious practical things about how to run a new Mac with this new feature. Thanks.

    The reason why people get confused with USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 is because they don't know or don't take into account the history of both.
    While the history of USB is pretty obvious, it's not the case for Thunderbolt.
    They both were in competition in the past, and we have to go back to the time of Firewire to understand.
    On one side, there was USB 1.0 Then USB 1.5 at the speed of 12.5Mbps, and on the other side, years later there was Firewire 400 (IEEE 1394a) @400Mbps that first equipped Apple computers.
    The difference between the two, other than the connector, was that Firewire is bidirectional, and you could daisy chain peripherals with Firewire unlike with USB (that's why you have USB A and USB B on the same cable because it's not bidirectional, and on firewire cables, both connectors are identical on both ends).
    USB 2 @480Mbps came out almost at the same time as Firewire 400.
    And then, Firewire 800 (1394b) came out with a speed of 800Mbps. So, the competitor released USB 3 with a speed of 1.5 Gbps in its first release (USB 3.0).
    Apple ditched Firewire and teamed with Intel to create Thunderbolt to replace Firewire.
    In the past, Apple has always wanted to create a protocol/connector that would gather data transfer, power supply, and display capability in one connector.
    And, in their first trials they made the ADC connector that you could find in the very first Cinema Display for the PowerMac G4.
    So when Thunderbolt 1 @10Gbps was made it contained data transfer, mini-display and power supply at the same time AND you could daisy chain peripherals unlike USB protocol.
    Just for a reminder, Thunderbolt was exclusively found on Apple computers when it came out for the very first time, and like firewire they were found later on, on PC's.
    Then USB 3.1 came out with the speed of 5Gbps, so the competitor made Thunderbolt 2 @20 Gbps.
    USB made a new connector called USB type C (USB-C) and Thunderbolt adopted this connector (it's only a connector) with Thunderbolt 3 so they can host the USB protocol on a channel.
    Thunderbolt 3 is so faster then USB 3.1 or USB 3.2 that it can handle the data transfer of these protocols plus the display, and their own Thunderbolt protocol.
    Now, I know some here are gonna say Apple didn't invent this or that, I don't care.
    I've used computers for 40 years and lived this history, not a heard of this or that.
    Get your facts and stop your eager, that's the history.

    The name of this video is What's the difference between Thunderbolt 3 & USB-C, yet you spent over half of the video giving a history lesson on USB (which NOBODY GIVES A FUCKING RAT'S ASS ABOUT)!!! You & everyone else on TH-cam & internet sites TRYING to explain (which you & them DIDN'T DO) make it as convoluted as internet providers did/do with MB & Mb. Even the chart EVERYONE uses at 2:17 shows and is confusing, it say USB 3.1 can do 10GBps then under Thunderbolt 3 it says includes USB 3.1, WTF?? Why can't you just SIMPLY explain it, is TB3 & USB-C the same YES or NO, that's all no yes and no they are either the exact same or they aren't. My truck and a Lamborghini both run on gas and you can drive them but are the they same HELL NO THEY AIN'T.
