I really appreciate your video on programming this bms. Very helpful. I've built my own 'Frankenstein' battery a bit over a year ago using another of JK's bms'. And when I connect to another whole house power station as an auxiliary the bms disconnects on the inrush current flow upon start up. If I connect it in parallel to the power station's battery (which is an option as there are 2 Anderson ports) the inrush is overcome and it works beautifully. But if I only use my own battery build as the sole source of battery the power station shuts down due to the inrush issue. I saw in your video the newer bms by JK (inverter bms) has capability to determine whether it is a short or inverter power up amp draw and am intrigued enough to place an order for the newer inverter bms, which is on the way. I had to use Ali Express as that is the only source I could locate for a single unit.
Its a bit disconcerting to see this video with CAN issues and am wondering if the quality control at JK is up to snuff. Time will tell. Thanks again.

Hi Andy. In terms of the aggregated battery capacity. I think the best calculation would be for JK to use the weighted average of the battery packs.
If the battery packs are a different capacity, then their SOC could indeed be different, but their voltages the same as they are connected in parallel.
I think using the weighted average calculation is the most accurate for connecting different capacity batteries in parallel.

Yup, definitely want to weigh SoC based on battery size for averaging purposes. Or even better: just calculate overall SoC based on the sum of available kWh divided by total storage.

Another Great Video Andy. You have verified my own finding. I have 2 of the 200A JK units. It only shows the Soc of the master to Victron. But I have over time noticed three issues.... 1. The PC software Suck Donkey B.... it doesnt show the correct battery into as you have found and you also cant change the Uart / Can protocol from the PC. Thanks goodness for the BT app.
    2. A power cycle of the BMS looses all settings and you need to start over.. In the last video one of the last things you did after setting up the BMS in the Jaki was to power it off, hence this time all your capacity and voltages are out.
    3. I have found the parallel to be a bit flaky. I have had several instances over the course of the past 2 weeks where the slave BMS drops off and Vic only shows the fata from the master. On the main screen of the BMS their is a value bottom right PCL:OFF. Helen Tells me this should be ON for parallel communications link, but cant tell me how to get it to turn on. There is a slide switch to disable it but nothing to turn it on.....Crickets since I reported this back.
I have found one other issue with the RCV and Float voltage. When my batteries got to the RCV and then changed to the float value the Victron through up an over voltage alarm from the BMS and triggered the Freq to 53hz so the Fronius Solar wouldn't charge anymore. it held this well below the 53v I had set and I eventually intervened and turned off the float swicth in the BMS and all was good again,.
Over all I am happy and I am confident enough that JK will sort out the issues in time, Hopefully issue 2 first, 3 second, then 1.
As always enjoy the SPATS and xmas looking forward to some excellent vids in 2024. Ty H.

Hi Andy & community and thanks for this long waited test. I have complete new setup build with two (2) JK-PB2A16S-20P, (200A, with 2A balancer). Ordered them also among first ones when those became available. Both of them seems to be working via bluetooth OK (8S config). Both of them stand on V14.03 software version while hardware appear to be V14.XA.
Bought also RS485 (USB to RJ45) module for the firmware updates. Managed to install it OK to my laptop. At least I think so.
The problem is that there is no way I can connect these BMS's to laptop through latest JK PC software, it just simply dont bring anything on the screen even the module light is flashing, so likely "something" is happening. COM port should be OK as well as well as device ID. So I have now a bit questionmark if the issue is on the RS485 module (first time ever I use that) or do I have two similar faulty JK-PB2A16S-20P's as you Andy seems to also have. Honestly I have no idea what to do next, obviously I cannot stay on 14.03 version.
Is there actually anybody who could confirm success on updating software for 200A, 2A version?
UART1 protocol No. = 0 (if trying to change as 1, it will give "sending failure" message on bluetooth app.)
    UART2 Protocol No. = 1
    CAN Protocol No. = 0
    Any ideas?

I was looking at cases that use the JBD bms and JBD seems to using the same communications board as the JK bms. However, on the JBD case the communications board is rotated 180 degrees (upside down from how Pace mounts it). If JK is copying that, then I can see why setting location 1 is set by moving the right switch on that DIP switch instead of the left switch.

@@jlegen Because internal resistance changes based on state of charge and capacity. If you have a 100Ah and 200Ah pack, the internal resistance of the 200Ah pack is less than the 100Ah pack, therefor the 200Ah pack supplies more current than the 100Ah pack when both are in parallel. They keep each other in balance.

It does make sense that the Master always needs to be at address 0, so that any other(!) address signals to the relevant BMS-ses that they are Slaves & need to expect a Master. When using PC software compared to Bluetooth, I also noticed similar issues that communication is slow(er) and discrepancies on the PC compared to BT. I guess there are still some rough edges on the software, hopefully it can be fixed soon.

You need a new (temporarily) sign : JK's Headquarter of Quality Control
It feels like they have not really done their job, the development of the windows software and the quality control that builds the releases.
it seems like you touch a topic and a bug jumps out of the screen into your focus / eyes
Luckily it is more or less fixable and nothing burnt into a rom which would require a chip exchange, just software or maybe firmware.
I still hope that this will be our next BMS cause I have more or less given up that SEPLOS will get their BMS right, which will mean I will have to add a Neey active balancer sooner or later depending on how long the new grade A cells stay so close together with a deviation of 0,005V - huge difference to the previous grade B lasered cells from EVE.
in 1 year we should have a bigger deviation after 200 to 240 charge cycles.
And I can not wait to see the whole system with the peter board working and the progress of the general DIY battery build market cause you are pushing on everyone hard to get things done and deliver running hard- and software that should work flawlessly. Quite a long journey you had embarked to.
The whole market of DIY builts and blueprints is shifting and more and more are pointing or linking to your channel.
    Hats off!
Hopefully SEPLOS is listening and watching how far ahead the competition has pushed and that they finally neeed to catch up, not only working on the hardware improvement, but also on the whole system performance and issues. I can not really recommend the SEPLOS BMS anymore even though 1 year ago JK had nothing which came close to an inverter BMS (cause I had bought back then their CANBUS edition which was not capable at all, I mean running with a growatt inverter for example).
And now it has flipped, JK far ahead of SEPLOS in such a short time and I bet SEPLOS is falling even more behind considering the progress JK has achieved since summer.

My idea of a master is that, beyond capacity and maybe a few other settings, all the slave BMS would have the same settings. Maybe there's a switch to have a slave follow the master BMS? Right now it looks like just a way to group a bunch of BMS's together and aggregate the data for your inverter.

@@BobDevV The Victron will have a maximum amperage setting separate from all the BMS monitoring as well. Obviously that would be set to what the wiring, breakers, fusing, and devices can actually handle regardless of what the batteries themselves can handle.
You are making an incorrect assumption about the shunt. If you look at Victron's product line-up, their smart shunts are 500A, 1000A, or 2000A. The smallest offering Victron has is the 500A shunt.
Most people will be limited by the wiring they choose, not the shunt.
In anycase, one always has breakers and fusing for the capabilities of the wiring, including the shunts. Whatever the worst-case winds up being, if you make a configuration mistake, you blow a fuse or trip a breaker. Nothing actually fries.
For example, I have three batteries in parallel for 200Ah @ 51.2V, capable of discharging or charging 200A continuously and bursting for 400A. Great. But my cabling is 2 AWG so the actual maximum amperage is only 115A. My fusing is 100A and I have an 80A master breaker because my current system doesn't have the ability to charge or discharge more than 60A anyway.
If I had a setup where the Victrons were under a centralized control system, I would thus set the global amperage limit to 60A.

I think this could be important: Charging Settings should copy to slaves in case of the Master fails. (If the lowest ID becomes the master then… or only 0 is a master? Which would be a single point of failure)
If the 200A version can’t see less than 0.8A the victron system still knows what it pulls, correct ? So SoC might be not correct but maybe better that shared current is not activated with this BMS

    Amperage resolutions can push the ADC. +/-250A = 500A range. @ 8 bits it would be 1.9A resolution. @ 10 bits it would be 0.49A resolution. And @ 12 bits it would be 0.12A resolution. 500 / 256.0 (8 bit), 500 / 1024.0 (10 bit), and 500 / 4096.0 (12 bit).

@@tomaszszczepaniak2101 If you want to double the build cost and calibrate a variable gain op-amp circuit, sure. Otherwise, no. 100% of designers will choose "no" for a product like this. Seriously.
These types of products will almost universally use the ADC built into the micro-controller rather than a discrete ADC chip. 8 and 10 bits is easy. 12 bits exists but is less common. At some point getting higher accuracy cheaply requires switching from SAR to Sigma-delta. Things can get messy very quickly at higher ADC resolutions.
Going higher than 12 bits, fully calibrated, generally adds too much expense for a product like this.
Same thing for the op-amps. A simple level-shifter and fixed-ratio amplifier is just a few parts. Like 5 or 6. Two fixed-ratio channels would run 10-12 parts. The instant you try to get more fancy than that you will end up with 20 parts and still not be done with the design.
Doing more than the basics quickly makes a device like this too expensive to be able to compete in the market.

@@tomaszszczepaniak2101 You can't control the impedence of the micro-controller's I/O pin when trying to pull-down to create the resistor tree, plus there is leakage on the resistors that are "off", plus the microcontroller's output won't pull all the way down to ground. So at a minimum you would need N-channel FETs hanging off the resistors and then control the FETs from the microcontroller.
As I said, calibration becomes a problem. Actually not just calibration, but also temperature compensation. They both become huge problems.
I guess level shifting isn't required for a shunt since the battery cabling for the shunt is ground-referenced. But since current has to be measured in both directions, you would need two op-amp circuits at a minimum (one for each direction) to avoid having to generate a negative supply.

Due to the wonkyness of JK I've had my battery builds on hold for over a year trying to figure out the issues with the various JK bms' I've purchased/installed. I tried to figure the issue from a logical standpoint and am still conflicted. The programmers at JK use some logic I'm not familiar with. And due to that I've been waiting for them or someone at another manufacturer to come up with a bms that doesn't use 'pretzel-logic'. It's very disheartening as a one off type buyer to continue to have to replace components and wait for deliveries. I often wonder how the makers of power stations, cope with this. Probably pallets of returns is my guess. I realize these are complex devices, but not enough quality control being used?*!

Hi Andy, another big JK software problem in parallel BMS: As you showed us in VenusOS/Cerbo under BMS/Details the number of BMS / batterypack is missing. As you said, this is NOT GOOD. But that's only the tip of the iceberg. My experiments show me that only voltages and temperatures of BMS #0 (the master with the CAN uplink) are transferred to Victron, no values from any other JK BMS (slaves) 😧 That's not bad, that's ugly. If cell voltages or temperatures of the other BMS / battery packs are running out of the secure range, Victron doesn't get the information, cannot for example ramp down the MPPT current.
Can you cross check my results and if you confirm that, report this big bug to JK. Thank you for your great work 👍🍻
PS: I would be happy, if I made a mistake.

I managed to connect to the rj12 connector with rs232 and 'use' the desktop app. Of course, the bms (100A/1A balance) has old firmware, so I couldn't see anything other than some zeroed voltage/current gauges. Tried to update firmware, but it said the firmware didn't match the device. "Device identity is not same to connected device!"

    • @EvrnDiller

OK, so I managed to update the firmware to .14. I realized that my rs485 adapter cable only had wires running to pins 4 and 5 on the rj45 connector, and the jk pinout description says pins 1,2 OR pins 7,8 are the rs485 A1 and B1. So I cut the cable and twisted on the brown and whitebrown wires from a cut end of a spare cat5 sitting around. Looking on the back of the jk connector board, it looks like there are only traces coming from pins 7 and 8, so I can't see 1 and 2 working. I measured the V coming out of the two wires from the usb adapter, and got ~3.5V when the leads were held with a certain polarity. I figured this would identify which one was the +, which I thought was the rs485B, but this didn't work. When I reversed the connection to pins 7,8, the brown/brownwhite on the rj45, I got things to work. I will mention that things did not work all at once - it seemed like I could see the overall cell voltage right away, but the rest of the desktop app showing me the controls tab took a minute or more to show up, and all of this was needed before I could actually update the firmware. I think I might have also needed to reboot the bms while the desktop app was running - not sure. A note to all trying to see anything in the desktop app for updating firmware - check the pinout of your adapter cable and don't be too quick to change connections around - things might take some time to load up. BTW I did have to set dipswitch 1 to ON. The led built into the rs485 adapter blinked a LOT brighter once I did this AND had made the polarity change. So all good. Deserve a dram. Merry xmas everybody!

The total SOC for a system using parallel batteries should use sum(remaining capacity of each) divided by sum(maximum capacities of each) & display as percentage. Averaging reported SOC% of a system using very different capacities capacities would be misleading. What to do when discharge has been turned off for a battery, is it still included for system SOC?

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

The new FW 14.15 fixes the SOC calculation.
Not sure of it still calculates SOC correctly if one BMS has dc turned off. We never tested such things in any BMS. I would expect SOC is still correct as for this battery SOC remains constant.

Thank you for doing all these tests. In a few days I will receive the hardware to do the upgrade. Then I'll be able to install a second BMS Jk on the second battery. It's reassuring to know that there are few bugs to correct. And I didn't know that BMS were limited in accuracy. 0.7a is still a lot I think. Does that mean that if I use only 0.4a 24 hours a day, for example, it won't detect any changes? Or just that it can't see it but counts it by deducting the overall voltage? I'm a bit confused about this.
    Thanks again Andy. 😊

For lifepo4 there is no chance to calculate the SoC based on the voltage as long as the voltage is not close to a fully charged or almost empty state.
