Nice little video. I proudly own serial number 4930. It has an aftermarket turbo to get the HP up to around 190 from the factory 130. Always attracts attention.
How did the FBI ever come to the conclusion that suggesting the crime _and_ inviting DeLorean to participate was going to be anything but entrapment?
It was the way that the powerful American car companies to get their friends in the government to get John DeLorean out of business
There was _talk_ that the UK government prompted the US authorities to act. DeLorean was seen as high level rip off merchant. It was embarrassing for both governments.
There was a series on PBS years ago that looked at the evolution of the American legal system through high profile cases (Miranda, Brown, Ect). The DeLorean case was discussed along with ABSCAM. As I recall it was concluded that they danced right on the edge of entrapment, but gave him enough chances to walk away, so it was acceptable at the time.
I don't know if the interpretation of entrapment has changed since then.
So it wasn't the persuasive nature of the argument made to the FBI by GM as shockingly alleged by some others and definitely not by myself!😉
it must have worked well for them in the past, would be my guess. The alphabet agencies are constantly doing this even now: getting one of their informers to suggest a crime and getting the "perps" to join in, then busting them. I doubt very much they will quit doing it anytime soon, if ever.
I have to say this video is very well structured and made, if you have absolutely zero interest in the car you can still happily watch through its entirety just cause of its chilled out nature
The original esprit giugiaro design was the 'purest' of them all. it still looks stunning.
In the 70's and 80's Giugiaro was one of (if not) the best Italian cardesigner(s) IMHO (next to Pininfarina and Bertone). A true master in beautifull balanced, tensioned wedge shapes and functional, minimalistic design.
In the 90's too Italdesign produced a few nice cardesigns, but they weren't always as strong as they used to be, with the more curvy, organic, soft, rounded styling that became the trend.
Luigi Colani was a master of organic design, but often too extravagant and impractical.
DeLorean was also partially responsible for eliminating the option check list, and pushing packages.
GM, when he was in charge of Pontiac, prided themselves on being able to make any car to fit any customer. Unfortunately this was highly inefficient for a mass production system. He pointed out the first generation Firebirds could be ordered with almost 400 dash variants. This greatly slowed production times because each part needed to be added individually. So he came out with package deals. X number of popular options, but at a lower price than if ordered individually.
Dealers didn't like the idea because many of the now factory added options had been dealer installed, at a serious mark-up. Other GM executives were afraid it would make them seem cheap. They claimed luxury car buyers would demand the right to order what they wanted, the way they wanted it.
In the end he showed how much they'd save per vehicle in production costs, and his argument won out.

more a combination of things, they had great sales initially. But a combination of having to ship the cars from ireland, the IRA bombings, the oil crisis peak and the lack of exotic car sales all contributed to the overall demise of dmc

@@bigginsd1 he pointed that out but picked a location thats right in the middle of a war zone to build a factory & its ironic how he slated GM about shoddy workmanship yet was producing cars thats were just as bad his demise was the drug bust & the location of the factory he lost money on production down to his lifestyle & sales wasnt what he expected i know this may upset some but ireland doesnt exactly have a good track record for manufacturing 2 ships & a car factory

@@jasinere35 De Lorean should have read a little recent history. Never get government money to build a factory in an area with no skilled workforce. The Rootes Group had done that as recently as 1962 in the Glasgow area and the Imp saga killed the company.
I saw DeLorean for the first time when I was a kid. I watched "Back to the Future" and from that moment I have dream to sit inside DeLorean. It's very interesting car and in my opinion it looks like taken out from the future. Very nice video! :)

I have a 1982 DeLorean I use as one of my daily drivers. I restored tbe car myself and since I completed it almost 4 years ago I haven't had a single issue. Its a restomod but still using the same drivetrain which is a wondeful motor once you remove the emission system and the car can actually breathe and run so much better. For me, its the most imperfect perfect sports car. She gets 28mpg, I use synthetic oil and add about 1200 miles a month. Its a great long distance driver also. My daily commute is 164 miles a day thru 3 states for work and the DeLorean does this trip a few times a week. In September she along with many other DeLorean's will be driving across country. These cars are better than most people will ever know and understand

@@jessiepinkman7736 either from DeLorean.com, DeLoreanIndustries.com, PJGrady.com, DeLorean.eu, DeLoreanGo.com. There are vendors on both sides on the ocean to help you out. Alot of NOS parts and a whole lot of new updated parts that were better than the original. Also vendors offer performance upgrades such as performance exhaust systems, cold air intakes, cam shafts, single or twin turbo set up and EFI upgrades. Its a wonderful time to own one of these cars. Everything is easy to get, great vendors and a huge online forum.

@@rosenfeldclaudia no, nothing like Enzo or a bunch of others. There's a huge difference between being driven and single-minded, and being inherently crooked. DeLorean was exceptionally unpleasant and bent.
i got one of them cars made in Belfast. it is incredible, always magnificent, and always a conversation stopper. one of the greatest car designs EVER. thanx 4 posting this, "Big Car"
John Z. Delorean was a victim of his own success at GM. He did very well by both Pontiac and Chevrolet but was a complete maverick when it came to the corporate lifestyle. I have to wonder that if he had stayed there and risen to running the entire place that GM would have probably weathered the 70s and 80s far better than it did. In the space of ten years they went from cars like the 70 Chevelle and Eldorado to wretched trash like the Citation. He was so prophetic about GM quality issues; they dogged that company for decades afterword.

I saw a doc about DeLorean recently. As much as I love the Pontiac’s made in his time, my view of him as a person dropped to below zero. He was a real slime ball. A true sociopath as many top execs are. Truly did not care who he hurt to keep on top.
Me too. And having driven one in high school, I think the Delorean was a shitbox. They sure did look good though, but then again so did a Bricklin.

Durango95, that’s the one! DeLorean & his partner ‘sold’ a cattle ranch to an elderly couple that they didn’t even own! The couple was really old-school and did the deal on a handshake thinking “JD is a famous, prominent, good man, why would he cheat us?” And got burned for it. His departure from GM was also explained as JD doing really bad stuff, but he had dirt on the GM brass, so they agreed to let him go quietly with a golden parachute.

Stephen Wynn bought *all* the stored parts for DeLoreans, a warehouse full of them. He can make a brand new car with original DeLorean parts. Interesting man.

I use to own a silver Volvo 264 and my friends never believe me when I said it has the same engine as the DeLorean
I think PVR V6 was used in several cars, including the Volvo 760 as well. Not one of Volvo's finest engines, but certainly better than the VW diesel used around the same time.
I had a 1981 Volvo Bertone coupe which also had the 2.8 PRV. V-6. Was able to get 215k miles before engine gave out

@@georgebarnes8163 Indeed. My mother owned a 740 Turbo wagon with the B230FT engine. She drove it hard to 224k miles before selling it to an acquaintance. It was a fantastic car.
I was a junior auditor in about 1975-78 and I was sent to Hethel to be part of the audit team. We became interested in a Swiss company that had received large amounts of money which passed through Lotus and which came from the NI government. It was listed as 'development funds', but Lotus was doing all of the development and never billed the company. A total of £10 million went to the Swiss company, which was a very large amount of money in the 1970s. Eventually, we dug deep enough to know that the two owners of the company were DeLorean and Chapman.Of course, everything was sent up to the higher-ups and nothing ever came of our detective work. I was told fifteen or so years later by an ex-partner of the aufit company that the money was a straightforward sweetener to the two men to build the car in NI. Needlss to say, we never found out what happened to the money but Chapman upgraded his private plane soon after!

The DMC was a well made reliable car once the initial production problems were addressed. Unlike GM cars, then and now.
Aye. He wanted to make a performance car that:
1. Had the performance of a sports car.
2. Cost the same as a family saloon.
3. Would last the lifetime of the owner.
The DMC-12 did in all fairness, achieve two of those goals (cost going up due to low sales & high shipping costs), unlike the Bricklin SV-1 & other attempts at such from the ground up car companies, which attained none of them.

I remember the Clan Clover was available with a grey leather interior, which was old stock from the DeLorean factory.
Such a good looking car, but weight bias and underdone engine disappointing and that crash test looked horrendous. Another interesting Big Car vid.👍
To be fair to the DMC-12, the semi-mid mounted engine was less tail heavy than most rear engined cars of the time, and crash safety regulations allow cars as unsafe as the "Gee Wizz" and the "Wheego" to exist via technicality, and didn't bar cars with appalling safety like the Land Rover Freelander or Hummer H2 either.
In my opinion cars like the Rover P6 and contemporary Citreons remain impressive in retrospect, for having a very high crash safety emphasis in the 1960's, when there was no government regulatory requirement to.

For many years since the first time i watched BTTF when i was a kid, it was my favorite car. Now i can see all of his problems and concept issues but still is a very remarkable and distintctive looking car with a story so as interesting as the time machine. Nice to watch it from your point of view.

A great video with lots of additional information and images I’ve never heard or seen before. I got to drive around the original test track a few years ago in my 911 - with my Dad following in his 911 Turbo - a special moment. I live around 25 miles away from the factory and I know if it had have still been in existence I would have been working there in some capacity.

For it's time the chevette was actually a decent econo box. I wore three of them out as a field service rep an never did much but change the oil an such. Made a tidy amount of profit off my expense reports while most of my co workers lost money driving fancier rides

Just watched the movie "Driven" on the plane home from Japan today, great movie if you want to see a re-enactment of the events of the drug sting background story!
Saw a Delorean at fully charge show. Converted over to electric. Very nice.

I know it has been done to death in various places, but nowhere in video form have I seen anything about the later stages of the car and its associated prototypes (The Minki I and Minki II are really interesting ideas about what the Mini should have been by the 90s had its development not been more or less abandoned by British Leyland).

Thanks for the idea. The mini story has been done a lot, so I like to focus on stories I don’t know so I can find more about them.
Also the gearless Mini (using only a Citroen CX torque converter with *no gear cogs)* was superb. The size and weight of the engine/transmission was greatly reduced. It was economical as well. Why it was never produced is engineering short sightedness. All it needed was an auto clutch that only directly engaged below 20mph, as pulling below 20mph there was too much slipping. So a torque converter and an auto clutch all that was needed.

How the Mini could have been. They designed a small 6 cylinder engine for it to give more torque.
@@johnburns4017 I thought it was a k-series with a cylinder chopped off on an auto subframe? An i6 Mini would have been pretty cool, though. Perhaps less cool than a 1.5 V12 from a Honda RA272, but that will never happen. I believe that was transversely mounted and what's good enough to win the 1965 Mexican Grand Prix is good enough for me!

The most unrealistic part about that movie, was believing that card could do 88 miles an hour. If not for that movie; few people would remember this car at all
Of course it could do 88. It did 60 in 8.8 seconds, suggesting a top speed of well over 110.

In Australia the Bolwell Nagari used the same Lotus inspired chassis (Campbell Bolwell had just come back from working at Lotus) . Looking at the crash test footage, I sure wouldn't want to be in a crash in one. Increased design regulations, the ADRs, wound up small players like them, unfortunately.

Back in 2018 I went to a comic con in Calgary Alberta and a man brought his back to the future DeLorean
It cost 20 bucks to sit in it and get a photo and the money goes to Parkinson’s disease

This car is one of the best Designs in all time
So... I used to build parts for one of the premier aftermarket suppliers of DeLorean auto parts in the US. If I look carefully I might be able to find one of the leftover Girling slave cylinders with DMC stamped on it.
Unfortunately the owner of that business passed away last year after a battle with cancer. He was a great guy. Cheers.
I wounder if the DeLorean could go on the market today? maybe in a newer version or like it is.....i would by one ..:)...Back to the future movies was a favorite movies for me and to watch them new was nice ..in the 80s i was a teen stil remember the car...sad it never hit the market as a best seller..:)
I always thought the DMC-12 looked a lot like an Esprit in shape.
That is exactly what it was, it was designed by Lotus.

DMC DeLorean's story is very interesting.
I think that is interesting. I believe there are plans on bringing out a new Delorean or newer ones built on the spare parts that they have.

The Delorean test track is still in Belfast to this very day. Just hidden behind a private factory so not accessible to the public. One of the most interesting and iconic cars ever made.
I have drove around it many times, I stopped driving around it when I put my big Mazda on its roof while doing so LOL.
DeLorean was worse than a thief. He effectively stole a large portion of city of Pontiac's firefighters retirement fund for a camper design he never intended to produce.
Here in Detroit the people that used to work with him are still around. You rarely hear a kind word spoken about him in conversation.

Not really a BTTF fan but I do admire the creator and the dream to build a car from the ground up. I feel like I am quoting Stan Smith hahahaha But I genuinely do.
The first batch that was built in Ireland and exported to the USA had to be rebuilt in the USA.
The 1975 DMC run a cylinder PSA Peugeot/ Citroen motor in prototype form. I prefer the prototype.

Probably. The workers were making good cars. Shame. My wife's friends in Belfast will be working on a DeLorean soon, how cool is that?!?
The factory is still used for automotive production. So a plus there, when there was no factory before DMC went there.
Looking at the production line footage and the fashions of the time, the Delorean must have looked like something out of science fiction!
It was based on the Lotus which was available. It did, and still does, look good.

for me the BMW's 70's 3.0 cs and csl from the 70's were the best ever looking and (powerful at the time) motors they ever made. but they rusted bad back then so not too many survive.
One of my favourite quotes about DeLorean was, "You knew the company was knackered when the owner was caught in n an hotel room with a mountain of coke that Alberto Tombs couldn't ski down!

The UK government said it drew even on the deal, as they would have to pay unemployment to the factory workers, and support their families, if the factory was not built. A pity the Triumph TR8 deal never went through. It may have been an interesting car. Anyone know any further details on this?

DeLorean quits GM. Builds rear engine car with unique skin. FBI sting. GM introduces mid engine car with unique skin. Cancels it 4 years later, just as it gets sorted out and becomes a good car. Nothing to see here, folks

Why didnt De Lorean talked to Mazda then?
Patent issues of the wankel engine.
NSU and Citroen had the rights to develop and build a wankel engine.
NSU had the first car the famous RO80 with a 1st gen. wankel engine.
They were also developing a 2nd gen wankel engine for several other car brands.
AMC, British Leyland, Ford, GM, Saab.
Citroen tested those 2nd gen. wankel engines in specialy build ami cars and sold it later in the GS birotor.
The fuelconsumption, emisions, and relaibilty issues killed the promissing engine project.
Alot of cars in development from several brands ment to have the wankel engine had to be converted to piston engines ( AMC pacer, Saab sonett etc. etc.)
Sofar i know the citroen GS birotor is the only production car with the 2nd gen. wankel engine.
Mazda designed the wankel engine from scratch and called it a rotary engine to avoid pattent issues.
