    Love your videos! Question, just installed an automatic EazyPod on my 1,220 gal koi pond. Shall I flush daily during initial maturing? I have been trying daily. Also, it seems to leave a ton of muck at the bottom and never flushes it all out automatically. I’ve been using my garden hose to flush, fill and flush again of the EazyPod. Not sure if I should be or just allow the pond water to fill and flush during my cleaning. Thank you sir!

      Hi mate, yes I definitely recommend flushing it daily, even during maturing. I've never seen any detriment to the process from flushing it every day.
      They can sometimes leave a bit of crap behind when they flush but usually the majority of it comes out. I would try to leave it to its own devices if you can and just monitor it. It shouldn't be an issue once everything settles down.

I've just received some K+ media from the UK (no supplier in Canada yet) and am planning to replace the K1 in one of my Eazy Pods with 25 Ltr of K+ and the remaining 25 ltr K+ will be going in my MBBR. Unfortunately I'll have to wait until mid to late May before I can open my pond for the season as the temperature here in southern Ontario was -24C with the wind this morning and the pond is still completely frozen over. It looks extremely easy to clean. My concern is that you state you clean it every day - that is no bad thing if it requires that amount of cleaning - kudos to your regime. However, for most people it is an inconvenience. How are you going to fare when the water temperatures warm up. The 'tempest' is going to develop a 'temper' if you don't clean it, don't you think?

    • @DazzleKoi
      @DazzleKoi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi mate, I clean my filter every day, regardless if it needs cleaning or not because mechanical filters only round up the waste in to a corner of the pond (except drums and sieves) , its still in the pond and your koi are still swimming around in it, breeding bacteria etc.
      I know people who run Pods and only flush them every couple of weeks and I've seen nothing to suggest the Tempest wouldn't be the same. I need to wait until summer feeding to confirm this though.
      So they are not flushed every day because they 'need' flushing as such. Every filter should be flushed every day really, and these two make it very quick and easy to do. This is the reason I chose these over others that are less easy to flush 🍻🍻

      @@DazzleKoi Have you taken a look at Wrighty’s take on the tempest? He’s introduced a timer and valve to automatically clean it. On the face of it, it seems a great idea.

      Yes mate I've seen Wrighty's, looks great.
      I think I'm mixed really on the automation. Its a great achievement and he's obviously a very clever man, I wouldn't know where to start with that stuff. But given the cost of it and potential for things to break/go wrong, and when you consider that it takes seconds to clean manually and just involves turning a few valves, I'm not sure its worth it to most of us. I certainly couldn't justify it. Others may disagree of course.

      Hi Rob, a Pod is technically overkill for that volume and fish load but its definitely not a bad thing in this case. I would go for a Pod over the alternatives such as a black box filter or a pressure filter. Also, if you decide to add more fish or make the pond bigger in future you would have no problems. I'd go for it mate 👍👍

    Hi Darren. I really enjoy your easy to follow videos. I have recently bought an easypod and I was advised to clean it twice a week to allow for the good bio to build up. I was surprised you do yours daily which and given your experience I think I too will feel better doing myself now. However what is your view of losing the good bio build up and does it harm this cleaning the pod daily. I would really appreciate your advice. Many thanks Bud.

    • @DazzleKoi
      @DazzleKoi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Brian, I personally don't buy in to that theory at all. When you aerate the K1 in the pod to clean it you create aerated K1 which is widely accepted to be the best form of biological media after a shower. Bio-film doesn't somehow fall off or get washed away by aeration so I had no qualms flushing my pod daily during the maturation process and I had virtually no new pond syndrome and fed pretty much from day one. In my opinion its better to get the organic waste out to give the bacteria a better chance than to leave it sitting in there using oxygen etc to decompose.

      Hi Ryan, sounds good mate 👍
      The skimmer all depends on your position really. Do you have trees or bushes etc that can drop leaves in the pond? Even neighbors trees that are quite far away will reach if the wind is strong. I personally don't have any trees anywhere near so I have no skimmer and its fine. I just get the odd leaf now and again when there are very strong winds.

    Great video, I'm thinking of upgrading to an easy pod , my question, if you an help m , is ,
    Does the easy pod have to be higher than the pond level to feed the clean water into it ?
    My setup is pump on the floor of the pond , pumps up into the filter bays , which is slightly higher than the level of the pond water, so it fills from there,
    I see the easy pod has a bottom out let pipe back to the pond , would it be able to push the water up enough to go back into the pond ?

    • @DazzleKoi
      @DazzleKoi  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there, yes if you are pump fed you will need the pod to sit higher than the pond unfortunately. Your pump pushes the water up to the top of the pod and it exits the bottom of the pod under gravity and flows back in to your pond.

    Hi mate, just fitted a pod and tempest, pod from bd and tempest from skimmer on two separate lines and two pumps, running both at 5000lph feeding my baki shower to get the 10,000lph I need at the top, only issue I have is I have a moving bed off my pod from my original system which I know is the correct level for my pond, installed the pod to match but in running the water level in the pod seems a bit low with the top of the k1 out of the water, I struggled to find a definitive water level for the pod, is there a rule of thumb to set the height of the pod?
    Ps. Tempest is a great bit of kit BUT surely at the price it should come with mounting brackets that you can actually use?

    • @DazzleKoi
      @DazzleKoi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi mate, I cant remember the suggested figure for the height of the Pod but it varies a bit with each system anyway so it best to just set it up to suit what you see when you let it fill.
      What size is the bottom drain line? Also, where does the water come up to in the pod with the pump turned off?
      You want 5500 litres through the pod after head loss so you can increase it a little bit. that will help the shower to.

    • @DazzleKoi

      Hi Paul, it sounds ok to be honest. I just realised, is your media not yet semi buoyant? It will sit a lot higher in the water for a few weeks until the surface film wears off and it absorbs a tiny amount of water.
      I don't want water coming over the overflows when I bubble the K1, I have it lower. I've recently raised my pond water level about 30mm by adjusting my overflow and I now have to open the waste valve for a couple of second to lower the level in the pod before I bubble or it does now spill over the overflows.

    Hi, good video however your eazpod isnt filling up enough to clean it properly. The pod should be filled up so it fills the three channels at the top to help the muck from the centre out to the outer chamber

    • @DazzleKoi
      @DazzleKoi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi mate, thanks for your comment. However, the overflows are there to stop you losing water if there is a blockage or an issue. If you have the water high enough to run over them, when you clean it the waste goes from the outer chamber , where it should be contained, to the inner chamber where it goes back to the pond. I've tested this extensively. I open to waste before I turn on the air so the water drops to prevent it going over the overflows.
      If you take water out of the center return area it is replaced by dirty water from the middle chamber.

    • @DazzleKoi
      @DazzleKoi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've tested this extensively and proved that the Pod cleans better with the water level below the overflows. Water going over the overflows just creates a circulation which pulls dirt in the the middle section and returns it to the pond when you put it back on line. You will send less waste back to the pond after a flush if you make sure you don't have water going over the overflows. Muck wouldn't be in the centre if you didn't have the level too high.

      The pod is designed to flow the muck and water from the middle to the outer chamber while bubbling, any muck in the centre should drain to the bottom as the pod empties, you're also meant to turn the air off before opening the waste valve to aid this process, finally, you're meant to rinse the outer cage to try and get any muck off the cage and into the waste to aid the cleanliness of the filter. I've never had an issue when I was running my pod doing it that way.

      Hi Neil, I reckon I could do it in my sleep 😁
      I didn't realise until I watched this that I line the valve handles up to. Horizontal when they are closed and vertical when they are open.

      Thanks Mitchell 👍
      I'm not sure exactly what you mean by not enough water addition mate?

      Sorry Dazzle koi, by the look of all the homemade up filter I’ve seen the more air you push in the better the results for clean .the tempest is a bit pricey for what it is when I piece of filter floss would do the same thing . Also every day cleaning sounds abut over the top for this time over year . I leave in the south of uk my pond is still below 10c I’m not producing any waste the bacteria would have died off due the cold in filter . How long could you leave it for before a clean . I did in joy your filter flush through it tho 👍

      Hi Mitchell, I did a video recently on DIY upflow filters and I talked about the air in that. Basically from what I've seen you want to put just enough air to gently agitate the bottom layers of media and not so much that the air pushes the waste up through the media and back to the pond. Because the air comes in from the bottom and the waste exits through the bottom you cant just blast it with air like say a Pod.
      Each to their own mate, the Tempest isn't for everyone, and £250 is a lot of money. Having used one though I couldn't be without it now, I love it so far.
      Yes I'm quite fussy when it comes to cleaning my filters. I clean my filters every day, regardless if it needs cleaning or not because mechanical filters only round up the waste in to a corner of the pond (except drums and sieves) , its still in the pond and your koi are still swimming around in it, its also breeding bacteria etc. I feed all year round to if they are hungry which they usually are down to about 6 C.
      I quite enjoy it to 😁😁😁

    Why on earth would you clean them every day!

      I want my koi swimming around in fresh clean water as much as possible rather than their own waste. Their appetites and general wellbeing is boosted greatly from this. I also quite enjoy it 👍👍👍
