Well done, to you and your party, Dara for bagging your first "Wainwright" (although I suspect not so in Ian's case). Given the bad weather you experienced, it's slightly weird that I'm viewing this whilst a storm is currently raging in the UK .. strange in that it has been named Storm Darragh! (pronounced 'Dara'). When we stayed at Ambleside, I visited the site of a Roman fort there (the foundations can still be seen although there is a better one to be found in Hard Knot Pass). Recalling the legend of King Arthur (the stories of whom some historians speculate may have been influenced by a Romano-British warlord after the Romans left Britain and Saxons invaded from Germany), I was struck by the fact that here was this place where it was said there may have been a forge where swords and other weapons were made and that it was reckoned that there was a likelihood that the name of this fort was Caliva - and all beside a lake. Even with very basic knowledge of Latin, I can't help think of someone saying back then,"Where did this great sword come from?" Was the answer "Ex Caliva?" (Excalibur).
I am really hoping that storm Darragh dies down and doesn't cause any damage to people and property! Thanks for that context about the origin of Excalibur! I had not heard that before. pride comes before a fell@@MagentaOtterTravels
Great video Dara! Did you know there is a British sport called "Fell Running" where mad northerners (usually) do 20 mile runs up and down the Fells??😊😊😊😊😊
No! But if I tried it, they would have to call it FALL running! And have an ambulance at the ready...
@@MagentaOtterTravels yes it's insane!!! If you have ever seen about the Barclay Marathons (in Tennasee ) a 100 mile mountain run 🏃♂️ it is regularly won by British fell runners...AND the first woman ever to complete it is a British fell runner called Jasmin Paris...Ian would definitely be interested!
Hello Dara, enjoying your videos! Getting caught out in the rain in the lake district wonderful scenery but you have to be prepared if you don't want to get drenched? Having a brew up on the banks of Windermere ( 30 years ago ) a large bin bag came to my rescue to save me being drowned In the rain? if you're going to get soaked no finer place? Best regards John
@@JohnRoe-yl4iy yes, bin bags are wonderful ponchos when you're desperate! Lol
Thanks for your support! Cheers! Dara
I know I'm getting up earlier these days Dara, but not THAT early! 😁 Who set the release time wrong??
Yesssss! It premiered at midnight when I was fast asleep! I'm so mad at myself!
Need to try some Kendal Mint cake
I have, and think it's quite refreshing! Ian says it's too sugary ;-)
Lakeland Slate is very different to Welsh Slate. It is called green slate and is much more durable than Welsh Slate. It is also on Buckingham Palace. It should last three hundred years on a roof!
My ancestors mined it for several generations.
That is a great legacy. Mining hard slate sounds like hard work!
It is amazing how long slate roofs last. Here in Texas we are lucky to make it 10 years with our shingle roofs... and frequent hail storms!
So Dara , did you have roast venison for tea at that hotel??😊😊😊😊😊🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌
I was waiting for someone to ask me that... especially since the deer was limping ;-)
@MagentaOtterTravels mmmmm! I think it's mates had sent it out ahead to check for predators....🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌
Did you like the sweet bottle in your room? I supply those 😊😊
YES! In fact, it's funny you bring that up... we had a conversation about those bottles! Christa was REALLY mad at herself that she forgot to take it when they checked out. I took mine in the car and then it mysteriously disappeared after Ian took the car to the car wash. Christa LOVED the sweets inside, and wanted to take the bottle home with her. You'll have to tell us how we can get more! You can email me at magentaotter@gmail.com. I don't always see TH-cam reply comments. Cheers! Dara
The Flower of the Himalayas…
The "Fog" on the hill is actually cloud!
Good point! I hiked up a mountain SO TALL it was in the clouds!! LOL
No chips with the chicken satay ? Whatever next !
Chips?! No way!!!
@ you could have had posh chips , served in a little wire basket…you can get away with it then..save face..
so I was right about you heading to Mordor, as you passed Rohan on the way.
BTW, was this video meant to go up at 4pm, rather than 4am?
I think it premiered 10 hours early again! You know I have a problem with rushing and doing too many things at once and not double checking that my premiere is at 10 AM central time. The default is midnight, and that's when I think it came out! I was so angry to wake up at 5 AM and see that it had premiered in the middle of the night while I was asleep!!! Thanks for watching anyway😊!
I didn't know Rohan was a place!
@@MagentaOtterTravels you need to catch up on your Tolkien. lol
@@jeanlongsden1696 True! I do!
The magenta garden was very attractive. Unfortunately Rhododendrons do rather too well in the UK; they have are somewhat poisonous, bees that collect their nectar make poison honey, they have no natural pests here to eat them, and they are difficult to eradicate. Oh! their wood makes good walking sticks! Keep on enjoying your adventures. Bye!
I love the look of rhododendrons, but I have heard that they are a rather invasive and troublesome species. Too bad!
I could almost hear you..."Can we go, now? "
Yep, pretty much! haha
Storm Darragh is raging over Britain tonight…
I'm sorry to hear that! I hope it doesn't do any damage.... or continue the leak in our flat that isn't getting fixed!!
Antennae……you need a grip for your forelock Dara…
LOL
If you said this was New Zealand id believe you…
They should have filmed Lord of the Rings here!
@@MagentaOtterTravels well they filmed Harry Potter in Goathland…1 Out of 2 aint bad…
If you wait for the weather in the Lakes you’ll never go anywhere.
@@martynadams2011 haha that's right! We waited nearly the whole day, but in the end it was a good thing. If we had hiked in the morning we wouldn't have seen a thing!
Lovely walk and indeed I can imagine why that bridge house is a favourite. You've sure equipped yourself well for the hike. 👌🩷
Anita, I woke up at 5 AM this morning and opened TH-cam as usual and was both happy and sad to see a comment from you! I was sad because that meant I had accidentally premiered my video 10 hours early! I hate it when that happens!🥹😫
But I was happy as always to hear from you! Thank you so much for watching! 🩷
@ I haven’t finished watching yet. Got called away 🤣🤣. Timing is so awkward. 🥰
