- Situated just south of Weston-super-Mare and standing over 300 ft high, Brean Down (NT) is a peninsula that extends some 1.5 miles into the Bristol Channel.
At around 3 miles in length, this circular walk, now part of the King Charles lll England Coastal Path, offers spectacular views (weather permitting) taking in Wales, The Mendip Hills, Glastonbury Tor and Brent Knoll to name but a few.
It also affords the opportunity to visit Brean Down Fort which is situated at the very end of the peninsula. Originally built to defend against Napoleonic invasion, it was rearmed at the outbreak of WW2 and used for, amongst other things, experimental weapons testing. It is managed by the National Trust and is free to enter and wander around.
The return route offers equally lovely views of the coastline before eventually winding downhill back to the carpark (and cafe).
