    Nice one John, I just upgraded my dust extraction system and already have a remote system in place. I will be doing as you advised.

    Thanks John, Very useful info. I'll be having a word with my sparky about sorting out a wireless control for my dust extraction.

    @john McGrath can you tell us what the remote controlled contactor unit is that you are using. I like the large push on/off switch to mount near tools.

    Great video, can't see the need for an nvr on a dust extractor though? Not sure of any reason why it would be dangerous to remove altogether

    Question is: if the nvr switch is energized all day or, in the event of forgetting about it and not returning to tge shop for several days, does that endager the magnetic switch by staying energized?

    How much energy is being used having the electromagnet activated all the time, and also is it bad for that nvr switch being on all the time? Thanks

    I have a lumber jack dust extractor. I am not sure, BUT i do not think i have a VSD within the housing of the NVR but a capacitor. 10 Microfarads. The wiring back into the motor has 3 cables. And the NVR is mounted to the unit.
    I am putting the dust extractor within a sealed cupboard with ventilation to the outside so wish to turn it on and off remotely.
    Any suggestions please?

    Hi great video! I have a jet dc 1100 ck dust collector and I bought a Long Ranger 220V Multigate Dust Collection Motor Starter Switch System. The system is produced by psi woodworking to auto switch the dust collector by each blast gate when wired and when the dust collector is connected to the long ranger product. It is the greatest disappointment in my workshop that this never worked. The company states that their product is sold only for us and they don’t know if it works in Europe (Greece). Up to know I haven’t managed to find an electrician to solve the issue or provide valid advice on how to set up such a system, so any help is highly appreciated. Thanks

  • @CP-du3ci

    As far as a device with a VFD, wouldn't your circuit diagram mean that the VFD was permanently live and drawing current. This would firstly consume energy when idle but also cause an issue if the VFD becomes faulty when the workshop is unoccupied. Isn't the output from most VFDs 3 phase?
    I use one of the plug in radio device that came from Maplins (may they rest in peace). My Jet extractor doesn't have a NVR, but the Maplins device will not power the device if the power comes back on after an outage and so is in effect a NVR.

      No is the short answer

      @@JohnMcGrathManInShed You are the qualified electrician, I am merely an electronics engineer of 40 years standing. I would say that any electronic equipment connected to a live connection will continue to draw current and in the event of failure of that device is a potential for fire or shorting mains voltage to unprotected parts of the device. Even the humble USB charger will draw a current if left plugged in or if it's built into a socket, that is why there is a regulation to state the maximum current they can draw whilst idle.

    Some good ideas for wiring in the switches. Do you know what the voltage range of the Ener-J receivers are, I know the Quinetic receivers need 85 to 260V, so after a VSD may not be the best place, depending on how low the VSD is set of course. Do the Ener-J switches not reset on power loss as well, effectively acting as NVR switches?

    • @JohnMcGrathManInShed
      @JohnMcGrathManInShed  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It will probably be the case that you can only put the contactor contacts after the vsd switching the motor and the control circuit before it, I deliberately didn't go in to that or draw out a complete circuit as it would be overly complicated for the question I was trying to answer in this video. Ener-j switches do reset on loss of power but they also stick on and off and it doesn't solve the problem of the actual nvr switch.

    I have a live network attached storage device (NAS drive). A problem with them is when there is a power outage and re-booting when power is resumed. I have lost one unit because of a double power outage within 30 seconds which killed the drive. Do they make domestic NVR switches and which can be accessed remotely perhaps with a mobile phone ?

    • @JohnMcGrathManInShed
      @JohnMcGrathManInShed  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You probably need a UPS ( uninterrupable power supply) and a surge protector to protect that kind of equipment properly

    why do you think it is the law to get an electrician to do electrical stuff that can kill you but anyone can do woodworking and injure themselves

    • @JohnMcGrathManInShed
      @JohnMcGrathManInShed  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because with electrical work there is the potential to hurt or kill other people and the destruction of property. Its not just about hurting yourself.
