    Kirklees Council are a disgrace. All the buildings that were once council owned (under Dewsbury council) were all slowly sold off once Kirklees came in to power. Their strategy was to sell as many assets as they could in order to make money to pump in to Huddersfield, so in essence, they stripped Dewsbury bare, and the beautiful buildings that were once considered 'assets' under Dewsbury council were sold to landlords (most of them out of town landlords who have little interest in Dewsbury and its rich history). A lot of the buildings once sold fell in to disrepair, and kirklees simply didn't say anything or have the power to say anything about the rot.
    Add to that the high rent and the aggressive business rates meant that businesses wouldn't have the foothold long enough to make use of the buildings that WERE being rented out. Hence why Dewsbury has become a ghost town and a shadow of its former self. It makes me so incredibly sad that the beautiful buildings and the hard work the generations before us put in to making Dewsbury a stunning place have just become smashed up and forgotten pieces of architecture that were prominent and valuable.
    Great video by the way!

      Glad you enjoyed the video and unfortunately seems to happen alot to these great buildings a real shame

      Kirklees are a horrible example of unaccountable over sized self serving government. Busy destroying everthing outside of Huddersfield. The bigger they get the smaller we are.

    Used to love going to Dewsbury Library in the 60s with my Dad. Also the bath next door it's so sad to see these wonderful building falling apart. But what can you expect when the council tore down Moot Hall to build a road. Moot Hall was built in 1200 but gone now.

    • @BeardedReality
      @BeardedReality  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah the library was fantastic and it is a shame - I have said this before the council's would rather build on Greenland rather than restore these buildings and the sad thing is this library is not that far gone and could be restored

    The hole in the roof is the bit of the nightclub building that's not in use. The Mural is part of a outdoor smoking area they opened up after the smoking ban and often has more people in it that inside the club. They've got a small PA so you hear the music that's playing.

    • @BeardedReality

      Ahh wonder what's going on with the nightclub 🤔

    Thank you thenk you so much for showing me the Dewsbury library. I missed the place so much. I used to study at DABTEC and spent a lot of afternoons and evenings at Dewsbury library. That beautiful staircase you showed brought back a lot of good old memories. I used to walk up the staircase to the upper floor and spent time studying there. There were long tables as I could remember. I like sitting at the upper floor and getting a nicer view looking outside.

    why is there so many abandoned buildings around your area? In my country Canada, these buildings are demolished and the government takes over the land usually. It seems like so much wasted space/potential no?

    • @BeardedReality
      @BeardedReality  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some places are wasted space the council here would rather build on green belts of lsnd as to fill there pockets - i come from a heavy ex textile town which is big enough to be a city got another like 19 mills to go to lol

    I used to spend many hours here back in the early 80's as a kid. Dewsbury was once quite a bustling wealthy town with lots of fine buildings - it even had three railway stations. Not quite the same now though!
