Hi! My name is Leonie and I am a 24 year old girl who loves talking about books! From YA to non-fiction to classics, I read it all (although fantasy will always be my fave). I live in the Netherlands and go to university, but make booktube videos in my spare time :)

I seriously needed to hear this from someone: “I dont need to be reading non-fiction all the time, sometimes you are already reading non-fiction all day, because you are studying” - I often forget that my 200 pages for uni a week are non-fiction and that it’s really okay to be burned out

Totally! I hate when people judge me for reading fantasy or romance stuff that is very easy and fast to read. I know these books aren’t classics, I don’t read them because I want to learn I read them because I want to give my brain a break from reading and learning the whole day. A lot of people don’t seem to understand that it is possible to like “shadow and bone” and “anna Karenina” at the same time :)

I'm a huge Frankenstein nerd and I love Mary Shelley's writing, so I was so excited to comment "Mary Wollstonecraft is Mary Shelley's mother!" but people beat me to it. Either way, I hope you enjoy the book! Shelley is the mother of science fiction, after all. It's a great read!
Also the amount of classics in this video made my classic loving heart swell.

Just a heads up for Jane Eyre: it's more broody & dramatic than cozy & melancholy. More of a Wuthering Heights vibe than a Pride and Prejudice vibe, if that helps a little.

What about _Rebecca_ by Daphne du Maurier? I've only seen the movie by Alfred Hitchcock, but hear that they kinda changed the ending, making it more obvious that Mr. & Mrs. de Winter love each other, whereas it's left up to interpretation in the book.

Frankenstein is one of my all-time favs; I hope you enjoy! Also, Mary Wollstonecraft is Mary Shelley's mother! Good catch :)
Piranesi does have a plot, it just takes a back burner until the middle/end. The beginning aligns us with 'Piranesi' by having us read his journals and fall in love with the House as he does.
"Tender is the Flesh" is a really interesting read. I almost DNFed it because it seemed really slow and I didn't care about any of the characters, but the last line was worth the whole book. I can't wait to hear your thoughts!

I just finished Jane Eyre last week and I really enjoyed it! I'm also not a native speaker but it really wasn't one of the harder books I've read at all, the narrator uses fancy words here and there but even if you don't understand all of them, you're going to be just fine. And the autumn vibes truly were *chef's kiss*

    • @just_ella17
      @just_ella17 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@julialovesgfriend I'm not a native speaker either and pride and prejudice was one of the first classics I've ever read in English and tbh I didn't really get to enjoy the book. I recently reread it, after having read four more Austen novels and a bunch of different English classics and the expierence was so much better.
So I definitely do think that it is manageable and enjoyable for non-native speakers but not if you're a beginner with classics.
If you want to try out Austen and maybe get a little used to her writing before going into pride and prejudice I would high key recommend Northanger Abbey.
It is a lot shorter than p&p has a smaller cast of characters and is overall less complex, however still super fun and definitely a "core" Jane Austen novel.

I read Tender is the Flesh and it is very dark and twisted, like the worst regular people could do in an awful system brought to the forth front. It’s mostly a world exploration but there is a small plot and a very interesting main character that makes you go 🧐. Also, House of Leaves is actually simpler than the layout makes it seem. The story itself is pretty simple and a lot of people skip the Johnny parts, so if you ever read it, do not do that it’s actually super important. I recommend “The Last Ritual” by SA Sidor. It’s based on Arkham, cosmic horror video games with a crime spin, but you don’t have to play the games. Very dreadful

Bunny is a really thoughtfully told horror story. Kind of turns the tables on gender with female power instead of toxic patriarchal tropes. You’ll just have to read it.

I really felt that comment of reading in the commute, I walk to and from work; but you bet I use almost every single little moment to sneak some reading to. Specially lunch XD

You mentioned that you like Annihilation - maybe read the book the movie was based on? Also, for eerie vibes: read I'm thinking of ending things. Starts off pretty slow but the ending is so good and it's not gorey or anything

Am I the only one questioning how not being able to eat animals translates into eating humans (which are also animal, so I am interested to know why we woulf be able to eat eachother). Last time I checked *plants* existed and we can eat them. We need to eat them even. So... anyway, does sound totally creepy

Pride and Prejudice is one of my favourite books of all time. I personally find it very accessible, more than Jane Eyre. Pride and Prejudice was the first classic and I found it quite easy to read as a non-native speaker of English.
