    MY old Mod 19 was made in the mid 60's. I was issued it in the late 70's and carried it until 1986 when our PD went to automatics. (Sig P220) The department sold the 19's to us for $65.00 and I still have mine.

    My father gave me this model gun when I graduated the Police Academy in 1998. He had it laser engraved by S&W with my name and the date I graduated. It is my ALL TIME favorite gun. My model has the firing pin on the hammer. So COOL!! Thanks Sootch for doing the review!!!

    My father used a3 57 mag model 28-2 s&w for 25 year while in the border Patrol . he won many shooting competitions and trophies through the years with it. I still have this S&W and it shoots as good now as it always has . I love this handgun . :)

      This new model classic is stronger than the older ones. Forcing cone won't split, barrel is stronger and more accurate, crane has a lockup feature that leaves the ejector rod to mind its own business, and the frame/barrel interface is strengthened compared to the older generation. Sure the frame lock is stupid, based on stupid ideas about gun safety. Thank lawyers for that. But everything else about it is more well made. According to Miculek, these modern classic 19's (or stainless 66) clean up easier at a gunsmith with action jobs, are more consistent from gun to gun, and just as strong as the N frame.

    I bought my first gun in 1982, (I was 17), it was s S&W Model 19 with a 6” barrel and goncalo alves grips.
    Being that young Mom protested my buying any type of firearm, but thanks to my older brother we convinced her that I was responsible enough to know how to safely handle a firearm.
    After all these years I still own it and would never think of selling it. It still has that beautiful deep blue finish that you spoke of.
    I don’t think I could ever be convinced to trade it for the new version.

    The forcing cone erosion problem is due to using 125 HP’s. Stick with 158 or 180 in the old M19’s. The 125 bullets are too short and let gas bleed around the bullet when jumping the gap.

    This was the gun my dad carried as his service weapon when I was a kid. He shot two men in the line of duty with it. It was the first handgun I ever shot, that's when I fell in love with shooting. I was suppose to end up owning it once my dad passed but his wife & her family thought different. The last I heard it had been stolen, so some criminal has a nice piece of history.

    While I was posted in Germany during 1988 and 1989 I bought a Mod 19 at the base Rod and Gun club. I loved shooting it but after returning to Ft Hood, Tx after Desert Storm I wanted a "wonder nine" and like an idiot I traded it in to pay for the Ruger p89DC I had my eye one. Now I still love my old Ruger P gun but dayum I kick myself for trading off that Mod 19. I was an idiot for getting rid of that old wheelgun.

      @@sootch00 The older I get, the more painful it is to pick up brass. I Love my S&W model 27-2 five inch barrel. Brass goes into a bucket, and home to reload. Also easier to load cylinder compared to stuffing cartridges in a mag with the arthritis getting worse.

    I got one of these not too long ago. It is freaking awesome. The plan was a S&W 586/686 after I got tired of my Kimber 1911. I will not buy a used gun, but I was also ignorant to the fact that the 19's made a comeback. Big fan of blued K and N frames. Anyone itching to try this gun out definitely should.

    I began my adult "gun life" with a 3 screw Ruger BlackHawk chambered in .357. I soon moved up to a 3 screw BlackHawk and a S&W Mod 57. Both in .41 Magnum. Life came along and they all had to move along. Now all of my handguns are semi auto and all of my handgun shooting is self defense oriented. Watching this video reminded me how much I miss just shooting for fun. There may be a S&W Mod 19 in my near future. If I dig deep enough, I am pretty sure that I still have reloading dies for .38/.357.

    11:55 From my understanding, the issue with K-frames and . 357 was that the forcing cone could crack, especially with the lighter bullet weight .357 loads. The K-frames have a flat machined at the bottom of the forcing cone, allowing space for the yoke when the cylinder is closed, but this also creates a weak spot as the forcing cone is significantly thinner in that area. The new Model 19 have a foring cone with the same thickness around it's full circumference.

    • @maxprivus
      @maxprivus 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      yes - Jerry Miculek has a good review of the new model and its barrel system here on youtube. It's actually using a shrouded barrel which allows the use of a full diameter forcing cone ( no lug flat ), equivalent to an N Frame. Apparently the flame cutting associated with lighter bullets (e.g. 125's ) is self limiting. When the forcing cone is thick enough, the cut can't proceed deeply enough to compromise that junction + its not under the same stress because the new barrel is tensioned at the other end.

    • @blackpowder4016
      @blackpowder4016 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The 70's were the decade of Super Vel ammo; 110 gr and 125 gr bullets at 1600+ fps. They took a lot of the popular blame for the Model 19's woes. There were not many cracked forcing cones but they were alarming. There were far more problems with binding cylinders, bent cylinder pins, and guns that went out of time and/or would not stay cocked on single action. Problems with the Model 19 led to the introduction of the L-frame guns. My Model 19 would bind up after several boxes of hot .357 magnums but was fine with .38 Special, .38 Special +P and target .357 loads at ~1200 fps.

    Great video! The grips are, I believe, by Altamont Company, as I bought a pair that were identical to the ones on your Model 19 and put them on my Model 66 earlier this week. I do have to disagree with a your comment about their current manufacturing methods and quality...IMO, the current quality is a far cry from what they used to produce. The materials may be better, but the fit, finish, and feel aren't close. I recently purchased a Performance Center 642 and out of the box it had a drag ring around the cylinder. My 1947 K-Frame .38 has only the barest hint of one, yet this, out of the box, is pronounced. The trigger on the 642 was likewise excessively heavy and gritty, and that's supposed to be from the Performance Center...again, the old K-Frame beat it hands down, and even the Model 66 I bought new last year had a better trigger.
    Smith still makes good revolvers, but they just aren't as good as they used to.

      Thanks Kurt, I agree with that the quality is no as good as it used to be. There are some added improvements with the crane lock up and floating firing pin but the old school hand fitting is long gone. I need a Model 66! lol!

    We carried the Model 15, a clone of the 19 but in .38 Spl. only, for the first 20 years of my 30 year police career. They were great but keeping the rust off the blued finish, when the guns were carried out in all kinds of weather, was tough. We were taught to use car wax on them, then wipe them down at the end of our shift w/a silicone cloth. As to the internal lock it’s useless and silly. We were taught to use our handcuffs to secure the weapon off duty. One end over the closet bar and the other end through the open frame of the gun.

    Good Video. I bought one of these a few weeks ago and think it's the best 357 I've ever owned (and I've owned a BUNCH of 357''s). All the sweet handing of the old Model 19/66's but they've eliminated the weak spot at the forcing cone. The trigger on mine is darn good out of the box. It's better than the one on my old 19-4. About the only thing I don't care for is the grips and there is really nothing wrong with them, except they're a bit narrow for handling full house 357 loads. If you plan to shoot it extensively you might want to invest in something more hand filling, but for me, since I shoot 99% 38's the factory grips will be fine.

    Medium frame 357, the second highest Firepower weapon on the street to this day, the first being a 38 Special revolver, are truly magnificent weapons. The model 19/ 66 Smith & Wesson, the Colt Trooper, and the Ruger Security Six are all wonderful first shot 5 Stoppers the 357 Magnum 125 grain hollow point is still to this day the best one shot fight stopper, that you can carry, on the planet.
    The original 357 Magnum loading, wood eviscerate K frame and other medium frame 357s. It is a blisteringly hot round by any standard to this day. Even the 38 Special treasury load which the 357 Magnum was designed to replace, would probably disassemble these firearms in relatively short order.

      A Rodrigues When I was looking to buy a .357 few years ago, first I was thinking to buy new GP100, then I ran into second hand m19, which was in almost new condition. It was m19-3 and I checked the serial, made in 1976. The year I was born. Bought it right away and it's just awesome. Pinned and recessed, old workmanship and appreciation of detail. It's a bit occasional sunny Sunday shooter for me. I would not dare to shoot volumes with it. Maybe some IDPA match from time to time.

  • @garyK.45ACP
    @garyK.45ACP 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for a great video, Sootch!
    In 1973 I was a young (new) police officer. We had to buy our own guns. Most departments in those days did not issue duty revolvers, they only specified what you must buy. They did provide Ithaca M37 shotguns for the squad cars. The revolvers (HAD TO BE revolvers) had to be Colt or S&W with 4 or 6 inch barrels and had to be .38 Special or .357 Mag. The Department issued .38 Special ammunition. My local gun shop had the Colt Trooper MKIII, nickle plated, with 4" barrel for $174. The S&W M19 with 4 " barrel, blued, was $198. The nickle plated model was more, and not in stock. I wanted a nickle plated gun for corrosion resistance as I knew it would be exposed to all kinds of weather as a duty gun. (Stainless was WAY expensive) I couldn't afford the higher priced S&W...so I bought the Colt. I never regretted that, BUT, I always wanted a M19. It seemed so much more elegant and well balanced. In 1978, I ran across a M19 with 2.5" barrel and round butt which had been factory engraved at a gun show, for a good price. I snapped it up! I have had it ever since. For some years it was my "off duty" gun. I still use it as one of my "tuxedo guns" for formal occasions. I no longer carry it regularly, preferring to keep it in good condition. My EDC guns now are polymer autos with coated stainless steel slides...much better suited for concealed carry...and cheaper, lighter than most steel revolvers. Even though I am a revolver guy at heart. The M19 will always be one of my favorites. I still have that Colt also! And the box, and the original sales receipt and, NO...you can not buy it for $174! LOL
    Is that a 5" barrel? Those were always hard to get and a lot of people preferred them.

    • @sootch00
      @sootch00  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Gary! An ld school Colt is a sweet revolver and now worth a fortune. Good choice. Glad you were able to pick up the 3" S&W though. That's a real working gun too. I like you taste in firearms! The barrel is 4-1/4" and they make a PC 3" Carry model as well that's ported. Hopefully more to come.

      I love the Colt also, Sootch. I know, they are crazy expensive now...but if one compares the average weekly pay now to the average weekly pay for a rookie cop in 1973, I am guessing it is all relative.

    The majority of LE officers back in the day had great difficulty qualifying with .357 Magnum. One large sheriffs department in the east issued S&W model 65's to their deputies, only 2 % carried Magnum loads, the rest carried .38 Special +P due to difficulty qualifying.

    Definitely old school cool. Picked one up a couple days ago, it's definitely good to go in the accuracy department, and it actually hits to point of aim out of the box, at least mine does with the loads I shot.
    I think the old way of manufacturing/pinning the barrel is superior, we had barrels flying downrange at the gun range I worked at, we had several S&W 686s on the rental wall. Extremely high round counts over several years, but that barrel has a shelf life, although us as individuals are not ever going to shoot enough for that to happen. S&W repaired them when it'd happen, warranty was great even on range guns (most manufacturers have a limited warranty on known range guns).
    I love the classic look of blued/wood, and I think the 4.25" barrel is just perfect for this frame and overall build and balance. I guess it's like the dude with a bunch of ARs who just wants to own something different and unique, so he gets a Tavor or a SCAR - not a lot of people shoot wheelguns as much these days, and when they do it's always silver/black grips. On top of that it might be a Taurus or a Charter Arms, or maybe a S&W or GP100 or something, but NOBODY rolls up with one of these bad Larrys.
    Totally in love with mine, I've been on the hunt for this exact one for a great price, finally found it.
