    I often service my reels and equipment. I polish my knives and sharpen my knifes. I build new rigs and so forth. I now do all this by whacking on a Roger Osborne video and Roger keeps me company while I get my fishing chores done. Great way to spend an afternoon when I cannot get out to the surf.

      What do you use for servicing the reels?

      @liquidsofa 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@JP-qn4uo I use a set of EZE-LAP L PAK4 Set SF/F/M/C Colour Coded Diamond Hones for sharpening my hooks and knives.
      I have a Stanley Multi Angle Vice that I have attached to my desk. That hold my hooks while I sharpen. I fish with barbless hooks.
      I am an avid Alvey fisherman, I have many Alvey reels I use, old and new. I do own the odd egg beater, but I have fished with Alvey since I was a kid.
      I use Lew's Super Duty Casting Reel Grease and Lew's super duty Spinning Reel Grease. I have a 3-in-One oil I use also.
      When it comes time to re-spool, I have a Plusinno Fishing line spooler for my Alvey reels and a Piscifun Speed X line spooler for my egg beaters. I would HIGHLY recommend you buy the actual products and not the cheap counterparts you find on Amazon. I fell for that trap and the quality difference is night and day. These reel spoolers are amazing at how well they combat air knots and line twist. I can leave my Alvey reels untied with just the loose line hanging and they don't unravel and tangle up.
      I can give links to all of these products if you want them.

    Hello Roger, many thanks for sharing your extensive knowledge of all things fishy. I grew up in a Victorian country town many miles from the coast but loved to beach fish with my dad when on our summer holidays. Being a girl, Dad only taught me a little bit & certainly not enough to be successful fishing on my own or with my kids.
    Dad died last year & all that ‘know how’ knowledge is gone.
    So, you are now my go too! Hopefully, your tutorials will get me & my brood catching fishing confidently and successfully soon.
    Bless you.

    Hi there Rodger, yes here in South Africa we do have a variety of worm species. Most notably are blood worms and moonshine worms. The way in which we catch and collect these is very different to say how you demonstrate how to catch beach worms. Ours often requires a pump, and lots of digging to get down to the worm itself. I personally haven’t attempted to catch these but seen tons of videos on how to catch them. Would be great to have you here! 🎉🇿🇦

      There are tons on videos on how to collect worms. Perhaps a couple of pilchards in a stocking could work however I've mostly seen the locals use hand pumps and some good old fashioned digging to retrieve the worms.

      @@RogerOsborneFishing it would be great to have you here, we love targeting our kob/mulloway here with squid and live bait. You will pick up the odd shark if they're hanging around so you're always in for a interesting session if that happens. 😅
      Our beach gear is pretty much heavy or extra heavy. 12-15ft, 3-7 Oz rods and heavy braided line (40lb and up) is very common due to our sometimes unforgiving coast line.

    Hi Roger, I’ve started fishing about a month ago and when I started I watched nothing but your videos. I did end up going and purchase a rod and reel on my own and kind of a jab in the dark with some research and recommends. Well it turns out I had gotten the exact same setup as your heavy set, just different brands. Good to know that my setup is the same as one an expert would use. I do a lot of traveling down south during summers and will head down again December this year. I’ll stop by and fish at Ulladulla and maybe I’ll run in to you. Thank you for all the teachings you do. But started over 50 years ago with a jarvis walker heavier 12 foot rod and a large threadline and an ABU 10000C when most used alveys rather than overheads. later using my rock spinning overheads with lighter ABUs and then lighter spin gear with reels up to 3000 size and up to 12 lbs. As an expat Saffa who has done many decades of beach and rock and surf angling, mostly in Natal. I cannot understand why you, and many other Aussie fishermen do not avail yourselves of a belt gimble or 'bucket' as us Saffa`s would call it. The convenience, comfort and control this simple device brings cannot be overstated. I`d be most interested to know. All the best.

      Good question, Charles! I've been pondering the same thing. In South Africa, it's customary to beach fish with a "bucket"-it's how I was taught, and I still use it. However, I've noticed that this practice isn't as common here in Australia. I also learned to beach fish with short-butt beach rods, whereas long-butt rods seem to be more prevalent here. Could this be due to a different tradition of practice, or is there another reason?
      Any thoughts Roger?

    Hi Roger. Thanks for the feedback from your live chat. What I think happened to your trace that had parted, is probably what we call a swim off in South Africa. That is when something thoothy swims into your line and bites it off. Here the culprits nine times out of ten is usually (shad/tailor/ bluefish), sharks or (wala-wala/hair tails/cutlasfish). Thanks for a great show. We do have beach worms of varous descriptions along our coast namely blood worms and moonshine worms. The moonshine worms are probably as close to your beach worms as we get here. The other worm species live in shael amongst rocks and have to be dug with your hands or a small garden spade (wonder worm), live under black and brown mussel beds (mussel worm)(very distructive to collect it) and coral worm (hard stone like tubes "glued" to the rocks and also very destructive to collect). I have seen someone use vinigar to make the mussel worms come out of the mussel beds on TH-cam; but want to try it myself and see if it works. That will save the mussel beds from being dug up to collect the mussel worms.

    @henkvanrooyen5213 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

    The way your trace line was frayed at the end with the live mullet we often get here in South Africa on live baits. The culprits are usually small (raggie pups/sand tiger pups), bronze whalers, dusky/grey sharks or hammerhead sharks; as they swim down the line to catch the live bait with their mouths open. The quick take off on the lighter rod would make me lean towards it being either a small bronzie or hammerhead. We usually rig the live bait with a fixed circle hook through the mouth or top lip and skin hook a J hook just under the skin on an adjustable line further back along the body between the first and second dorsal fins. Alternatively we rig the circle hook through the top of the eyes of the baitfish with some cable ties and/or dacron. That way the live bait stays with its head facing into any current and stays alive longer.

    This is Roger from PA int the US with a few questions.
    1. What is your opinion on shock leaders to support casting heavy bait and weight? I have heard a rule of thumb is 10lb per ounce for a shock leader.
    2. How do you handle wanting to change line 10lb to 15 or 20 lb weight? Do you use multiple spools? Or do you have multiple rod reel combos?
    3. Do you have an opinion of line size affecting the bite? That is using heavier line will negatively affect your chances of getting a bite.

    Hi Roger, here is another angle on this …. I have a 12’ beach rod (Makurio II) and use 20lb braid. I currently have 5500 and a 7500 penn reels. Even the smaller reel is 3/4 full of bedding mono to get 250m of 20lb braid on it. The bigger reel would probably take a km of 20lb braid. Yet both of these reels are hopelessly unbalanced on the 12’ rod. This makes it very tip heavy and uncomfortable to hold.
    So if I put say a 14000 reel on this rod to make it balanced, and want to use 20lb braid, I would need to use a huge amount of bedding line on it to finish it with 20lb braid.
    So I guess this is another tradeoff to consider. ( My wife suggests I just use the small reel and tape a diving weight to the rod.)

    • @stippystips9418
      @stippystips9418 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      there is weight tape u can put on the lowest point of the handle, some reels are heavier than others even at similar sizes, some rods u can unscrew the butt and u can put weight in it somehow. though its not too uncommon for a long surf rod to be somewhat tip heavy, theyre generally used in a rod holder most of the time anyway

    Hi Roger, I have rarely seen you using any burly on the beach, is it a waste of time due to the current or would you recommend it?

      Hi Mickey,
      I would definitely recommend it. Recently, I have not been berleying much however it actually makes a very big difference and I should be doing it more often.

    Hi Roger, what series size is the reel on your medium rod.

    Hi Roger.
    With the heavier 12 or 13 foot rods, do you favour a two-piece or three/four piece rods? The car-carrying convenience of the 3 of 4 piece rods is great, but does this compromise the rod’s performance?

    Why don’t you use braid on the beach? Do you use braid on any of your rods? What knot do use for the braid if you use it?

      Hi Jeff,
      I do like braid and use it as well. Mono is more forgiving for beginners and is easier to tie.

    Recently there has been a lot of rain. Heavy swells and stormy weather. How does this kind of weather affect your fishing trip/expectations?

    Interestingly what is called whiting (AKA king fish) in the US is different than what we call whiting here in Aus.
    Is it possible to have your email. I was wondering if you would be open to sponsorship?
