Oh, man, there would be so many great combinations for that. If Tom were the killer, he'd just sit back silently and let the cops talk themselves into a tizzy. If Rosie were the killer, she'd probably just wade headlong into them and somehow still psych them out because who would actually do that. And if Sully were the killer, he'd probably say "Right, so if I use this boat token now, where can I go?"
I remember when I was young we used to play Scotland Yard loads, like it was my dads favourite game. The box is completely knackered now we’ve played it that much. Really tempted to buy this as I love playing board games with my dad but I’ve found it’s something he likes to do less and less as I’ve grown older and started to beat him at shit like battleships. I think he’d love the challenge of this. Great vid Adam, loving this channel so much
I didn't need more reasons to buy this game but here they are. I can't wait until I can actually get a group together to play all the games I want to play/buy.
I recently played my first Whitehall Mystery game (bought it after watching a few videos about it here) and I'm happy to report... it was INCREDIBLE. Thanks so much Adam and team for this recommendation!
The first masterpiece video for a game I've already played! Got this one for myself as a birthday present last February based off of your personal top 10 video and your glowing recommendation from that. Probably the most played game in my collection right next to Pandemic
This video convinced me to get a copy, and me & my game friends absolutely love it! I don’t think we’ve had this many tense moments and near miss laughs in a long time. Cant recommend enough! You guys make amazing videos and we love your channel! :D
@@BEEEbobPOOP Aw, that sucks :/ we’re in the United States sadly, we were able to just find one at our local game store..if you’re willing to pay the import fees you could probably get a copy off Amazon USA or EBay
I love Whitehall Mystery. It's such a tense game of cooperative deduction as the police, or bluff and escape as Jack. Since introducing it to my family it's become a favorite during game night, even if Jack has yet to win a game, everyone still wants to play as Jack, determined to make a trickier plan than the last player! And that is something I love with the design, at the beginning of the game, the police seem absolutely clueless and their situation hopeless, but as soon as they just find one clue, the net starts closing and Jack who seemed like a ghost, is suddenly just a mortal after all. A mortal who has to escape in a stagecoach just to make it to the next round. Marvellous game and simple enough to play with the family! (If they don't mind the murder theme, of course.) Happy you featured it here!
Need some more videos like this, I did buy the game after watching board game club and love this detailed video on how the play the game. I know I can’t wait to play it with my group
I saw the first one from you guys and liked the idea of hidden movement games so I looked for one with a theme I love. I found Last Friday, it's a hidden movement game thats Friday the 13th without the license. It's actually slightly different cause it switchs between who's chasing and running. Definitely an awesome buy and glad you guys pointed me in that direction.
I bought a cheap version of Scotland Yard off of the NZ version of eBay (Trade me). Even in SY the tension absolutely skyrockets when Mr X has to reveal himself, especially if the other players are close by. Whitehall Mystery looks amazing too.
I love letter from whitechapel but it is very time consuming so this would be great. I just looked at all the local game stops around me and Whitehall is sold out everywhere and on Amazon (in Canada) they are asking over $120.00. That is insane!!!
I remember being introduced to scotland yard by my brother who bought it when he was in England in the nineties and it was such a fun game, i think i am gonna need to try this one
I was finally the first one to win as Jack in our gaming group. Admittedly, it was against two new players and one who had watched our previous rounds, so I don't treat it as a definitive victory. But I look forward to getting one over our more seasoned coppers!
Thanks for the review! I just played this game for the first time, but as I understand it, the inspectors first all move and then all take an action. They don't go move + action, move + action, move + action as shown in the video.
I've been waiting 2 years for this game to go on sale. Today i saw it on sale and I bought it. Is this game more fun with more players? And is it fun with 2 players also? Thanks for the video!
I've played Scotland Yard and I like that game a lot. I think the hidden movement mechanics are very fun. I do agree. It's a very fun style of board game and I wish. I could find more and play more games like that
I think it's a great game, but to provide a different viewpoint I wanna say this: Most turns players move 3 policemen and check for clues with all of them (because why not). On average, I would say this means checking 4 fields per policeman, so there is a lot of: 56? Nope! 62? No. 63? No. 65? No sir (queue next policemen). This can get tedious and boring quickly, especially in a 2 player game.
There was another rule that it seems you are breaking - Jack cant shout "I've done it!" as he moves to the final circle - he must wait until the Investigators have moved and investigated. Also, when he makes a special move, he places the move card next to the board aligned with the movement track, so the Investigators can see at which turn the special move was made. This isn't meant to criticise - I didn't know about this game until I watched this video.
@@SoulTarot90 you can play it as many times as you want. Basically is like playing hide n seek or something similar. One player runs around while doing delinquency and the others chase him. No story, no narrative arc, just a tense, concentrated, focused and amazing game. 11/10 you should buy it
I played one game of Letters from Whitechapel as Jack during which I deliberately crossed over my path, went into tiny winding bits of city, and left one of my friends almost screaming when he searched and found clues in every single direction. Eventually the police worked out what street I had to get and surrounded it....only for one of them to get nervous, break the cordon to search, and gift me the win. They vowed never to play Poker with me as I declared I'd won....not realising I was basically drowning in sweat, and a complete bag of nerves. Whitehall Mystery does look like a nicer tighter version of that and I recommend it to anyone with nerves of steel, and a devilish smirk.
How do I get to play this with you Adam? I want a gripping tense game to play with wife and friends, now that Lockdown restrictions have eased, and hearing how highly you speak of this makes me want to play it immediately. Retailers available of the game are out of stock currently though... Sad times indeed
Everybody talks down on Letters From Whitechapel using words like "clunky" "longer" "setting up resets" etc, but if you are into strategic thinking where decisions you made earlier impact later phases, Letters is more refined and have more nuance for that type of strategy. I prefer that over the quick cycle fast setup play styles.
I've been on the hunt for 'Fury of Dracula', 'Letters from Whitechapel' and 'Whitechapel Mystery'. Sold out all the places I've tried. Have they gone out of print?!
One of the first games I played with hidden movement was Stellar Conquest. Technically, your movement wasn't hidden because your pieces were on the board, but flipped over. But the task force pieces could represent any number of ships (including zero), so at least with the people I played with, it was common to send out a bunch of empty task forces to obscure the movement of your actual ships. (The first half of each game plays like multiplayer solitaire though, so I don't recommend it unless you like that kind of game.)
0:58 the balloon bursting was as if you’re a bomb disposal expert who knows that there is a 50/50 chance of the bomb exploding (or not), but you’re expecting it to be a normal bomb but then it blows up and you discover it’s actually a nuclear bomb. Obliterating a city, not just a building. It reminds me of what it must have been like in Jersey in c.2001 when a reasonably handsome teenager’s voice broke and everybody suddenly noticed that it was approximately 394 trillion octaves deeper than anybody else’s. All great fun, but I’m not sure what it has got to do with the board game. :)
At the Origins Gaming convention I played a hidden movement game called Nuns on the Run. You play as novices hiding from the nuns while exploring the abbey.
I love this game. So simple and so fun. I just wish I didn't have to be Jack all the time. My gaming group finds being Jack too stressful, so if I want to play I need to toss the lumpy sack of body bits over my shoulder and take one for the team.
I searched for more than a year for a SH copy of Fury of Dracula (3rd ed.) while it was out of print and I only played it once. I loved every bit of it and I want it to be my favorite game, but I cant find people willing to play it because there are so many rules and it takes soooo long to explain it. It's absolutely gorgeous and thematic, but too complex for the non gamers i can usually convince to play with. Yeah, I love the idea of FOD but it is such a big commitment. We played for about two hours before we realized (as Dracula) I had missed the line at the bottom of Spain so I had kind of cheated. It went on for another hour by which time most people had got too fatigued (or too drunk) to care. Rather than heading to Castle Dracula to get healed I purposely got caught just so we could do something else. I don't mind setting the board every round, it may slow the game down but add some strategy to it. The only thing that I really would have loved to have in WhiteChapel is the abilities for the police. They are all different in color and their portraits, but gameplay wise they are all the same, and I think that makes more interesting to play with jack rather than with the police.

Not as tightly deseigned as Whitehall Mystery, but I REALLY like Nuns on the Run, not at least due to it's silly Theme. My favourite Hidden Movement Game. And sicne the game works with sight lines, one knocked over vase might lead to the discovery of quite a few novices, that hid inside the chapel, despite them being silent, and a subsequent benny hil chase thene through the whole monestary.
I played Whitehall Mystery first and I love how bare-bones it is when compared to Letters of Whitechappel which I played layer on. The first game of Whitehall Mystery I played Jack, and it was so tense, I got caught on my last move... The cops needed to investigate 1 of 3 locations and they it was a 1 in 3 chance they find me... And they picked the one I was in... Darn it was one of my best board gaming experience ever... It's amazing...
with more than two players the cops should NOT be allowed to converse or interact----in fact, they should have to write down the next destination of their cop and move simultaneously (unless they have an Inspector Frederick Abberlaine card?)
I enjoy letters from whitechapel, set up takes almost no time unless you count the placing of wretched pawns as set up and not game play. I will agree that the game play takes a while, 2-3 hours is my ususal estimate.
I recently played this game for the first time and found it quite frustrating 😅 and not satisfying. We were often really close but then lost Jack again. In the end I was glad when the game was over and I could play something else. Maybe with the right group of people it can be fun
So when a cop investigates a space does Jack have to say he's there (if he is) or can he say nothing? Or is it only if the cop announces he wants to try and make an arrest that Jack has to announce he's there?
To look for clues, an Investigator player announces, one at a time and in any desired order, the numbers of the circles he wishes to inspect with his figure. Jack must check whether these numbers appear on his sheet in any space on the row for the current round. If a number appears, Jack places 1 transparent yellow Clue marker on that numbered circle (without revealing other information), and that Investigator's look for clues action immediately ends. In case Jack is in that space, Jack will not reveal that he is actually there, just place a yellow clue marker. Jack only reveals his actual location at the very end of each round or if an Investigator executes an arrest in a space Jack is at the moment.
Quick question. I’ve never played this game so bare with me. Say I’m playing as Jack and I’m standing on space 63 and someone searches for a clue on 63 do I say that’s the space I’m standing on? Or is that only if they say make an arrest?
ADAM: you don't tell them that you're currently there, but you do put a clue token on that space on the board. It's then up to the cops to work out if you're currently there or if you were there on a previous round
I kind of want to see this on the next Board Game Club...
Absolutely! Maybe even different versions, one where you see what jack does and one where it's just the bobby's POV
@@Veggieman87 Rosie is neutral chaos and therefore the most suitable choice for Jack.

Great video! But rules correction @10:50… You are not allowed to search for clues until all investigators have moved.

I recently played this game for the first time and found it quite frustrating 😅 and not satisfying. We were often really close but then lost Jack again. In the end I was glad when the game was over and I could play something else. Maybe with the right group of people it can be fun
Woooo love this videos
Should have been a review of Subbuteo or Klask to mark England bringing football home tomorrow
That shirt: Detroit, NY City. My favorite location in the US.
Is this appearing on board game club, I really want to see it in action
So what is difference between this n Whitechapel beside the body parts?
Just can’t get a copy of this 😭
So when a cop investigates a space does Jack have to say he's there (if he is) or can he say nothing? Or is it only if the cop announces he wants to try and make an arrest that Jack has to announce he's there?
To look for clues, an Investigator player announces, one at a time and in any desired order, the numbers of the circles he wishes to inspect with his figure. Jack must check whether these numbers
appear on his sheet in any space on the row for the current round.
PLEASE PLEASE Play this on Board Game Club!
Just at the right moment
Adam how many boardgames do you have roughly?
That was scary, I was cooking
