- As an avid environmentalist and public transit enthusiast, I've always been fascinated by taking the Amtrak across America from my home in New York to my school in Los Angeles, CA. Follow along on my first part of the journey as I trek solo from New York to Chicago!

Why did you take the cardinal instead of the lake shore limited? LSL is much shorter...
From what I've read, the Cardinal was lot more scenic! Plus I had a lot of time to kill, anyways.

Amtrak does this deal called the Rail Pass, which gets you 10 train tickets for a flat rate. I think it differs based on season but for the summer it was $500.
