I know you’ve heard the story of me falling into a funk and sleeping on my sister’s couch for 18 months in my early twenties. One thing you probably didn’t know is how I got out of this funk.
I wanted to record a solo round on this topic because it’s one of the most powerful tools I’ve ever used to shift my life - it’s called creating a personal advisory board. If you haven’t heard of it before, a personal advisory board is a group of people that you build around you to give you wisdom, inspire you, and, most importantly, create accountability.
You may be wondering what the difference is between an advisor and a mentor - the truth is there is a big difference.
A mentor is someone you look up to. You may know them, but you may not. Chances are, today, any mentor you have can answer your questions through resources they’ve created. Maybe it’s a book, a podcast, or online articles. Board members are people you know much more intimately. It’s also important they have an invested interest in your success.
Ultimately, they have skin in the game when it comes to you. But it goes beyond that. An advisory board can help you in all aspects of your life. It’s a team for success and they are there to call on throughout the year and see your goals through to the end.
No matter where you are at in your life and business, you need an advisory board. Without it, you’re either going to stay stagnant or move toward your dreams much slower than you could with it.
Learn all about my tips on building the ultimate advisory board, on Episode 661.

Thank you Lewis! I like these one on one talks, it’s nice to hear directly from you for a change. This was a great topic that I needed guidance in. The thing that stood out most to me was you sharing your story of the first few mentors you had. It made me realize that there are opportunities I am missing out on for mentorship with people I already know because I’m so focused on thinking I need an expert that’s way out of my reach. I tend to focus on step 10 when I’m still on step 1,2, or 3 and this talk gave me awareness that I am doing that same thing in this aspect of my life as well. I’m stoked to see what other one on one talks you have for us in the future. Thank you for your commitment to teach and share what you have learned.

These one-on-one talks with Lewis have become my favourite morning episodes! :-) I like how he connected his story about his sister's couch to reaching his visions (4:59). The School of Greatness, the Mask of Masculinity... so much gratitude, magnanimity, and understanding. *tear* It's this kind mentoring I've always wished I had.
If you're busy, you can ignore this. However, I mention this because I'd feel comfortable sharing the stuffed animals in my room to Lewis' moderated comments section.
What does a visible minority 21 y/o do when he's been raped by a prof, got counselling, has a science uni degree with no debt., trying to write a trilogy of survival books on overcoming rape & still be successful in academia, and finding a full-time job as a financial starter to reach a vision to help other's see the beauty of their lives through conferences and books?

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughtful insights on building a “dream team” Louis! 14 years ago when my then 54-year-old wife was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, I essentially did the same thing: I assembled Team Edna to get me through all the essential steps. It included a spiritual team, a legal team, a medical team, a neighbor support team, a family support team, financial planning team, etc., all of which of course changed over the years, but were essential in making sure that Edna’s needs were all met. I can see how establishing formal relationships with individuals on a “dream team“ can take my new plans to apply some new protocols shown to reverse Alzheimer’s to a whole new level, Perhaps even to accelerate it. Grateful for all you’ve shared, wishing you all the best!

This advice goes way beyond the personal advisory board itself. It shows me how important it is to return to my groundwork for a clear vision and goals... and take stock of and honour the efforts I have already made on my path... and then choose locally here in New Zealand some people that can support me on my journey.

I'm not on my sister's couch but I am in a funk, so thank you so much for this video! This video is perfect for those of us who are at that in-between phase of reading 1,000 books and listening to TH-cam videos, and need to go to the next step of finding actual people to interact with and talk to about specific growth issues we're facing in our lives. Great reminders on common mistakes not to make (i.e. make it personal, make sure it's people you've met at least one time, make sure the person knows their specific role, etc. etc.). Make sure you reference this video often and link it in your future videos because this is great!!!

Lewis this is what sets people apart and tracking to new levels. I wanted to see your growth on video so I took a peak at your TH-cam video posts from 8,7,6 and 5 years ago. I can see the leaps you made around 2013-14. I think your dream team/personal advisory board is a fantastic idea. I recently (like 2 days ago) called on another peer I know who made the leap last spring into speaking at conferences for astrology. I've been running my part-time business/practice for readings/consultations, webinars and workshops since 2013. I've done a lot of personal study and working on a certification to Master from my favorite teacher. I put my name in the hat last week for a conference happening in 2020 in India...and I am now a speaker on the program!!! My peer I mentioned above and she would be one on my personal advisory board for growing in this area. I am interested to add another few from areas I want to grow. One day I may replace my day job with my passion full-time. I've learned a lot especially on your Instagram training and part of your Inner Circle. Still learning and growing, thank you grateful for your insights, experience and wisdom.

      Your welcome.
As a suggestions for more of these; and clearly i'm asking for personal reasons because I'm still struggle with these
      Developing a personal missions.
Something that provides motivation to spring out of bed excited to start work on the things that move towards goals.
The only goal I have is to workout what my goals are. :/
      Stopping procrastination/fear.
Though maybe these will go away once a mission has been developed?

Lewis Howes ... oh! there is so much in this talk, very dense information, laid out, structured and presented well with heart .... lot’s of related pearls inbetween ....you are handing the keys and the masterplan to the poeple .... wonderful video! ... personally, i like the idea of a structured advisory board for key progress areas of my life in addition to a small group of trusted friends, mentors, mastermind ... all good and powerful ... however, this talk has struck a chord with me, thanks ;)

Let people sell themselves because they do it anyway...;-) Thank you, thank you, thank you my guy for being awesome Lewis, peace... ✌ictory!!

Would you suggest an alternative legal way to pay voluntary advisory board professionals for a start up when we are not in a position to set up stock options and there is not budget for the amount of time I need to see them...an hour a week.....could I propose to donate my time to their cause...if that is legal
