I've been a dealer here in Georgia for 18 years and you DONT need a lot here. You only need an office with a land line, a desk, and a filing cabinet. I do things a bit different and I have a very lavish office that's very private for all my customers. I sell about 15 cars a month. I sell more cars than some dealers here in Georgia that have big lots. I have a part time title clerk, part time detail guy, and a part time mechanic. I do very well and sell everything from a 20 year old Honda Civic to late model Lamborghini and I do just fine. I do have a floor plan but I use my own cash at this point to buy my cars. So yes, you CAN do very well and not have a lot with 50 cars on them. Some may say how can you thrive selling 15 cars a month?...Well, first of all I don't have a lot with huge overhead with 50 cars paying a floor plan fee on each car that sit there unsold. Secondly, do the math. If I'm averaging 15 cars a month and if I just turn a profit of $2,500 off each vehicle, that's $37,500 profit a month or just under a half million dollars a year, and when you sprinkle in one or two of those 15 cars are high end exotic cars that will have a $7k - $10k profit, that half a million dollar year profit is now in the $600k range. Not a bad way to earn a living being a full fledged licensed dealer that can buy cars at any Manhiem or any other auction facility in the country. So in many cases, you can earn a great living and sell cars and not have all that tremendous overhead dealers have with lots.

Over 20 years in this awful business - the best piece of advice - never EVER get a flooring line / line of credit - I went from 1 car to 200 in inventory without borrowing a dollar - but I've seen a lot of people fail because of the flooring lines

I have a dealers license and sale from home. All advertising done online, cheaper cash cars. The trick in Louisiana is your home has to be outside of city limits.
There is no zoning outside of city limits.

I’m in Texas and want to Tell startups they have display requirements and monthly reports to file with two different state offices. There is a state sponsored class you need to attend. It may be required now days , it teaches you about title work and as is forms etc. btw I got a 2500$ fine for not filling out the entire 17 digit ID on the as is form on a car for sale on my lot. So go to school an do you homework.
Great video. As someone who has often dreamt about having a DL to flip a few cars a year as a side hustle. You glossed over one of the biggest setbacks of having a lot - it has to be zoned properly. Try finding even a 1/10acre lot in any major city that is properly zoned (usually has to be commercial C3) and it will likely be ultra expensive. One question I've always had, can you buy a lot in an unincorporated, unzoned area, throw in a mobile trailer as an office, would that qualify in some states?
Really you don't need a big lot, friend has a small 10x10 office in a commerecial building and has a few spaces in the parking lot, you can park your cars around the building

@@ritikparmar3022 Depending on your state, you are limited to how many cars you can sell in a 12 month period, otherwise you will get fined or go to jail. Florida is 3.
Likewise if you buy a car, get the title and don't put it in your name, and pass it along to the new owner, that is called JUMPING THE TITLE and is ILLEGAL. Will get you fined and in bit trouble.
Best to find a small dealer that will let you use their license to buy cars. If you want to drive it, put it in your name. If you want to sell it, give it to the dealer to sell it for you. Beware there are dealers who will SELL your car and keep the $$
Best to go to a dealer only auction and go talk the MANAGER, HE probably knows an honest dealer that will let you use their license and pay a flat fee per car, like $250
In any state you are and you want NEW Car Dealers License you need a location and you need affiliations with the manufacturer- you have to be a franchised dealer but all other licenses do not require you to have a location other then car rental business! Wholesale license you don’t need a license and you can sell cars to the public just as a private owner but you still get to go to dealer’s auctions and buy cars for wholesale value. Broker’s license you can buy new cars from dealers and auctions and sell to the public and you don’t need a physical location to do your business. Rental License you can buy and sell and rent cars but you need physical location! Another way to get around all licenses is to own legitimate car repair shop or gas station then you can sell cars on your property and display them as a used car lot!

In what state is that?? Bc as far as I know, and I've been in the business for almost 30 years, a wholesaler license doesn't allow you to sell to the public. Auctions, yes, but directly to the public, NO.
Good information, new sub here! So, Michigan passed some rather draconian laws with regard to dealer license. Not only do you need a physical location, but you also have to have a car repair facility, as well. If you do not have a car repair facility, you have to have a repair shop agree to sponsor or vouch for you, leaving you vulnerable and subject to another's judgement/whims. I imagine this is bc of all the craigslist abuses and scams that happened, but its gone too far now. Its a shame bc cars are a passion of mine and I would like to be able to have a small number of specific type cars to buy and sell

Depending on were you live, you can sell cars without a license but there is a limit per year.

By the way, in California, you only need 2 parking spots for the retail physical location, but even those small lots are hard to find. Probably harder than traditional larger size lots, at least in my area.

In Georgia, you do not necessarily need a lot to obtain "dealer license" As "Auto Broker", you can have dealer license! All you need is office space within proper zoning in your city or county and some other documents! With that, you can obtain dealer license.

@@flowmaster2010 you do have to have a commercial space...I just took the Georgia pre licensing class you also need a $35000 bond and a landline and you must have a sign that meets their standards
I too got my dealer’s license in GA with an “auto broker” office. In GA it’s the same license. I didn’t even know that you could do that until I started purchasing cars off Facebook Marketplace for my rental car business . I noticed that many of the dealers had an office. It’s an awesome set up for starting out. My rent is only $400 a month. I only pay $1000 a month for rent , internet/phone , garage keepers insurance, and dealer management system. My bond was only $443, and it is good for 3 years.

An important thing - for wholesale only dealer license - if using home address as an office, it must be on first floor and with direct access to it from outside per DMV site. Please correct if wrong. Now what options if it’s an apt and NOT on 1st floor?

Both are good. its very hard to get a junk yard license. most stated wont issues new license. you may have to buy a existing one but they are good money makers. but extremely capital intensive. almost 5x the cost of a dealership

The only way you could rent person the person is with a rental car license if you do it any other way you run the risk of your insurance is not covering your vehicle

Great content ! This will help a lot. It's really hard to get a Retail Dealer License in Sacramento County. I found a lady that will do all the paperwork and the class for $1500 and it will cost me around $6k just to get the licenses and permits. Is that a lot or is it worth it ? Also, she was saying that I will have a $50,000 bond. Is that bond like insurance or is it like a loan ? I'm 19 and I have very little budget. What do you recommend me doing ?
I would recommend working for a small dealership and see how the daily operations go sell cars for a few months see if you enjoy it before making the investment

Just to be clear, a $50,000 bond doesn't cost 50k. In Texas,it cost $700.

@@lifetransparently Hey Jay, I'm a former car dealer, so I can answer this for you. Yes, with a wholesale license you can purchase vehicles at the dealer only auctions like Manheim, Adesa, etc. Some states will allow a Wholesale License to get dealer plates and some will not. So check with your state law as it will be a huge pain getting the vehicles from auction to your house, warehouse, etc without dealer plates. You would have to pay someone to transport them on a truck or hire a drive service. Once you purchase the vehicles and recondition (recon) them, you will not be able to rent them on Turo until you register them to your name or your company name as they will need a license plate, registration, insurance, etc. Even if your state allows a wholesaler to get dealer plates, you cannot rent them on Turo with your dealer plates. Turo wouldn't allow it I'm sure and if the state or DMV found out they would take your license and you would be in serious hot legal water. Hope this helps and best of luck to you Jay.

Doing the use of a friend's license to buy at dealer auctions worked for me for 25 years
But it was a friend I trusted and he never let me down
Was not doing quantity but specific cars here and there
Paid him $150 per car but today it's up to $250 a car.
IF you want to sell them on his lot, agree on the split the profit, it's easy
You can also put them in YOUR name up to the state limit
Can you register your own car if you buy a car from auction with wholesale license? For example, buying for Turo business. Not selling to general public but registering for yourself or company name. There is no clear answer anywhere on dmv website
If you don’t want contact the DMV reach out to your local Insurance Registration Services to register your vehicle.

I agree you should buy and sell in your state , but all this laws and regulations is bull s*** , it's all a state making money and you having overhead , annual renewing licencing , and you taking cars to a dealer licence can sell for you means you better be prepared to give him a cut , two different anual insurances to run a dealer , no , it sound catchy , but not with the time effort and investment you need

Also selling under someone else’s dealer’s license could be illegal to do depending on what state you are in. Technically in GA, it’s illegal to sell under someone else’s license . You risk getting your dealer’s license revoked by the used motor vehicle board. However this law is not enforced much in GA so a number of dealers allow others to sell under their licenses. Of course though employees of the dealership can legally purchase under the license on behalf of the dealership.

NO reason you can't be a buyer for the dealer, they sell the car and pay you what you need out of it
@@InMyBrz I’m not referring to being a buyer. A buyer is an employee or independent contractor for the dealership who buys inventory for the dealership to sell to it’s customers. The difference between what is legal versus illegal is whose money is being used to be purchase the car that is being resold. It is illegal for someone to use a dealer’s license to purchase cars using his or her own money to resell the vehicle. This law is not enforced, but it technically is still illegal in GA.
WELL, ways around that. YOu find the car and make the bid as a buyer from the dealer, the DEALER pays the auction for the car. Now legally they can sell it to you for a $1 more, that's a contract to purchase. OR the dealer can sell the car to the public and give you a commission, you're an employee@@jwanders10

Hi Lucky, Im in the process of starting my used car dealership in Oregon. I have read over the requirements for a dealership location in Oregon. the requirements are; "Each business location established by a dealer must: (1) have sufficient space to display one or more vehicles of the type the dealer has been issued a certificate to sell; (2) provide a means for the public to contact the dealer or an employee of the dealer at all times during the dealer’s normal business hours; (3) display an exterior sign affixed to the land or building that identifies the dealership by the name; and (4) display, in a publicly conspicuous manner, the vehicle dealer certificate". I've been brainstorming locations, I've come up with commercial storage units or renting an office space. please let me know if im on the right path or if you have any suggestions. Thanks

MOST STORAGE UNIT places will NOT LET YOU sell cars there out of a STORAGE UNIT
YOU are better off looking for a professional building that has a big unused parking lot.
YOU can rent a tiny office inside the building and park your cars anywhere in their big parking lot. They might charge you something like $50 a month over 4 cars
Don't forget "zoning laws." In my area you can't have a dealership except within three very specific areas of the city. So just "any retail" spot won't work at all. It's painful in Washington, and I suspect Oregon is just as messed up.

so i own two acres in eastern ky and im out in the county where zoning laws really dont affect me. so basically if a gravel the one acre and put a shop building garage that is free standing on this property would i be fine doing that? im only planning to move a car or two a month and they will be cars i buy and repair.

@@melito25 no really havent had the money to put a shop up. i have friend that has similar set up though and he said i should be fine when i do. biggest thing he said was the insurance and the bond or assets that they checked for. however im in perry co. jefferson could be alot more strict since its a metro area vs rural.
Did you mean make 2 copies of the same dealer license, buy/lease your own small 10 spot property, but befriend a large dealership owner and pay him $500 to hang a copy of your license? If so, why not just pay $500 or lease his place outright?

I disagree with this guy on one point. Naturally if your going to buy 100 cars, you need your own lot and license. but if you just want to buy a few cars per week or month, then it is totally ok to be hooked up with someone else's license as an agent. you can sell the cars anywhere. it is called "curbing"...selling off a corner somewhere next to a grocery store..I see it all the time. And you have access to dealers auctions.

Just as long as the city you live in has the correct zoning then you shouldn’t be a problem call the local business licensing to double check

Yes there are lots of shops that rebuild cars cars you can get land a shop and labor much cheaper then anyone in a city.

Thanks for the video! I live in Michigan and I spoke with a dealer in Colorado about being employed as a broker with his dealership. We discussed the possibility of the company's HQ (with a physical location) would remain in Colorado, and I would obtain a Michigan broker license and work remotely for his dealership. Thoughts?
It’s pretty common for some dealerships to have buyers in different states as long as you guys have trust and everything is above board the only downfall is when you work with companies out of state or it’s not under your license if any dealer does anything illegal sometimes you get brought into the mess so as long as the guys on the up and up you should be good

I thought I had heard about online only dealers and salvage dealers not having to have physical lots as well? Is that a thing?
In some states you can buy salvage cars if you’re a body shop you don’t need a dealers license but every other place you usually need some sort of business location it doesn’t have to be a physical lot but it needs to be a business address

You could have bankruptcies in the past for closures in the past but if you currently have bad credit unfortunately no floorplans will sign you up it’s almost everything now with dealerships you have to have a good credit there is a lot of banks they won’t even finance cars for you unless you have a good credit
I understand your negativity about out of state dealers licenses from known states that make it easy to get. However, if you're not interested in financing or writing checks to these auctions and you're a cash buyer, what other drawbacks are there?
if you rent a licence or do out of state you cant sell cars cash unless you Fedex Paperwork back and forth. some states require you being there in person to do paperwork at your dealership location
Sounds like a bunch of bs. For 8 years I went through more cars a month than most people go to a gas station with only $10 at pump every time. Very few people had mobile phones, most people had no option to have a phone that could call out or receive calls while you are connected to the internet. No license crap no dmv crap no irs crap no bank scams no issues no losses. Just did it in a way that to me made sense, never had someone to show me how to simply give my profits to some uninvolved party for no reason other than because of being told it's how its done. Thats the kind of bs i would tell someone if i wanted them to pay me for doing nothing. I moved on to more interesting things but because I do like cars i still move 1 or 2 a month in the same way i always had, even still no dmv no loan vultures from the banks, no tax crap or dmv, etc. Just not for paying bills anymore, but for the sake of playing with cars as a hobby but not having my house look like 50 aliens are living in my house.
