We finish scraping the underseal and start the floor repairs | Part 16

  • The last few weeks has been hard work, chipping away at the underseal to reveal the rot that needs to be repaired. There is more than we thought, but we hope to fly through it.
    Matt has also thrown a spanner in the works by wanting to fit an overdrive gearbox from an MGB. It's not a straight forward swap.

    Hi everyone, we decided fit the MGB gearbox as we thought the triumph box wouldn't be up to the hammer we plan on giving the GT when its done. I'm talking several passes in the lake district kind of hammer. And also we ended up fitting a MGB crank into our engine, so the triumph input shaft wouldn't fit anyway. And lets face it, who doesn't love an over drive switch ON TOP OF THE GEARKNOB. We literally cannot wait to use it. So excited. Also Triumph OD boxes are crazy expensive whereas the B box was £120!
    Glad you all like our efforts. Looking forward to getting some paint on the underside. And also giving poor old Simon a break. He'll be on chief tea duty shortly. If only he knew how to make a good cuppa!

      @@CCC_Matt in MGBs the o/d switch on the gear lever knob is known to cause problems with shorts at the point where it enters the gearbox and gets flexed a lot even causing fires at times. Personally I would fit a fixed switch somewhere else.

      @CCC_Matt 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Thanks for the heads up. The wiring has been repaired at that point, so I will look for a proper flexible solution, something that is designed to be flexible. There will be something out there. Definitely keeping a gear knob switch, they are so cool!

    I have at various times fitted a Laycock J Type (from a Triumph Spitfire 1500) to the standard gearbox and more latterly a Ford Type 9 to my Marina Coupe. The O/D required the transmission tunnel raising by 50mm, but the Type 9 will slot in with no body mods. To raise the tunnel, I split the tunnel down the middle and folded the sides up and then welded a new lid on the top. I would strongly suggest that you open the transmission tunnel first and fit your engine and gearbox option to mount the gearbox tail at the right height for the propshaft, then make up and weld on the new transmission tunnel top to align the gearstick hole.

      Good tips there Chris. That's what we do when we fit type 9s to Anglias. Some people note where the new gearstick hole should be and cut out a rectangle, including the existing gearstick hole and rotate it 180 degrees and weld back in. We've been in talks with Simon McOwan as he's got a converted shell and shortened prop. You guys at the Marina club have been great!

      With the MGB box, you may find that the gearstick will be super close to the handbrake lever, requiring that to be moved back a little.

    I know it's not BL bloodline but would it be easier to fit a Ford type 9 five speed box? The other five speed box is the sherpa but believe that's a fairly big unit. Is that same box as TR7 and SD1 LT77?

    Why did you decide not to get it sandblasted? There are companies out there who can do it without damage. I had it done here in Central Scotland and there was no damage whatsoever. This is still the best way to prepare, I would not use the chemical dip or the burning. Perhaps you’ve explained in the videos, I’ve not checked. I owned a marina when they were current and it was about as unremarkable as any car I ever owned. Great heater. Huge boot. Great clutch judder, paintwork fell off in sheets, no room in front footwells, incredibly noisy. Dubious front suspension. Simple and easy to maintain.

    • @crap_car
      @crap_car  26 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      We did mention in the video that we will be using the pot blaster in a future video. We can't use the pot blaster in the workshop because of the mess, so when we've finished the welding we will get it into the smaller workshop or outside so we can blast it.

    As all the Marinas were fitted with Triumph gearboxes from factory I imagine it would be easier to fit a D or J series overdrive from a Spitfire to the box rather than an MGB unit. May need an adaption to the gearstick aperture and no need to change the Bellhousing.

    I fitted a spitfire overdrive gearbox into an MG midget 1500 years ago. The base gearbox looks the same as the marina, if you could get one it may save moving the gearstick, you would need to stretch the tunnel it for the overdrive, i used a scissor jack if i remember correctly!

    • @johnmoruzzi7236
      @johnmoruzzi7236 27 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      As I understand it, the Marina introduced the BL “single rail’ gearbox that was later adopted by various Triumphs replacing the “3 rail” gearboxes used in Heralds, Spitfires, Vitesses and GT6s as they were replaced or modernised in the early 70s. So the Spitfire Toledo and Dolomites went single rail, and then also the Midget 1500 got it together with the Triumph engine from the Spitfire 1500.
      So a single rail gearbox and J-type overdrive from a Dolomite 1850 could probably have been made to fit easier than an old MGB gearbox and OD….
