    The ladder approach definitely isn't necessary for everyone! My only word of caution is to make sure you don't jump from stages 1-4 right away and have a high annual fee card with your second-longest credit history on it. Especially one like the platinum that doesn't have a great downgrade path. Great work on this one Mark!

    • @MarkReese
      @MarkReese  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Right on. Way better to get at least 1 no-fee card early on to build history 👊

      Great point. Everyone needs one or two solid tier 2 cards like the Citi Double Cash or Chase Freedom Unlimited.

    • @Cause023
      @Cause023 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      how many credit cards should you have before you apply for a premium travel card like CSR or Venture X? If I had one card, one year credit history and 770 score, I should still go for a tier 2 card instead of jumping to a CSR, Venture X?

    • @devlin76
      @devlin76 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Cause023 An important thing to keep in mind with premium travel cards is they typically have a minimum credit limit of $10,000. Meaning, that the issuer has to determine you are someone they want to give a $10,000 limit to regardless of the particular card benefits. I would recommend getting one or two tier 2 cards, and let your credit history mature a little more.

    • @Cause023
      @Cause023 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@devlin76 yeahs that’s true. So typically two years of credit history? Even with a high credit score after just one year of credit history?
      Because if that’s the case, I’d be wasting almost two years hanging in the cash back zone when I want to be on team travel 😅 I’m already going to be one year on team cash back, I don’t know if I’ll survive two more years here lol

    This was a fun one.
    My very first card was an Amex Green, which was upgraded via an offer I received by mail into the Amex platinum while I was still in college. I thought they were nuts, but I was happy with it.
    I have enjoyed learning and thinking about trifectas and other strategies, but I think we undervalue just getting a card because it has one benefit you really want. Or not finishing off a trifecta because you already have cards that fill that role.
    Basically, perfect strategies are fun thought exercises, but in real life you might be just as happy grabbing cards as and when they have something specific you need.

    I agree, but I wouldn't call it a mistake since the ladder is a good framework, but it's definitely not the only way to achieve success with credit cards! With the right mindset, you really can start anywhere on the ladder, and your first card certainly does not have be at level 1 or 2 depending on your own specific circumstances!

    AMEX might be the trickiest part of the ladder. Typically to get the best SUBs, you actually need to start with the platinum. But as you mentioned in the video, you need to have a decent credit history unless you plan on keeping that high AF for a long time. Honestly, this is probably yet another good reason to start with Chase and eventually move on to AMEX. They really should be late game stuff if you’re playing seriously.

    I actually started at what would be the level 2 (I got a Freedom Unlimited and Freedom flex) just to build a slightly higher score. I then applied and got approved for the Sapphire Reserve and have been enjoying all the benefits while continuing to build my credit and learn about all the other possibilities. You definitely don’t need any specific path, but find one that fits your goals and helps you along your credit journey!

    Great video as always, Mark. The credit card ladder is a popular topic in the credit card niche on TH-cam. I can see how many people watch them and think it is the best/only way to go. What I have learned from you is to build out a credit card strategy and work that plan. That could be the ladder approach, but the overall goal is to achieve the goals you set for yourself using credit cards. Also, such a great point to get a higher tier card earlier rather than later to get those higher welcome offers and have points that can be used rather than waiting on climbing the ladder. Thank you again, Mark.

    • @MarkReese
      @MarkReese  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks Chris! Yep, for the travelers out there it can make a lot of sense to target this mid- to high-tier cards a bit earlier. That said, there's also a huge advantage to getting at least 1 entry-level card w/ no annual fee to keep long term for that credit score (even better if the card also fits into a long term rewards strategy).

    Mark if you're going to ever do a similar video on tier 1. My first secure card was the TD Bank Cash card. In 2022 it did have an annual fee. Later after I applied and they dropped it. In November I got a prorated refund. It also has 3% on dining, 2% gas,1% for everything. I was banking with TD. Bank for a decade when I applied for my first secure. Even if you don't follow every Regional Bank secure credit cards. It should be the first place a person starts out for their own card. Next to Discover It. I never applied to Discover. My TD Bank card make so much money on the statement credits. It is my go to card especially for dining.
    You should avoid recommending the Capital One Platinum card at all on tier one. It's the worst thing a person can do in the credit building or rebuilding. Capital One will destroy anyone on thin file with the Capital One bucket.

    • @MarkReese

      Yep. Unfortunately, there isn't 1 method to make that happen, nor will a given method work for all itineraries. • @featherpony
    @featherpony ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Mark, I've been trying to bust the myth of the credit card ladder. At the end of the video, you stated that you are not calling the ladder "wrong". However... I am calling it wrong.
    Like you said, its misleading. It guides people "up" the ladder in a uniform direction, as if this is the destination (at the top) that all people want to be. Furthermore, people like me on "team cash back" tend to stay on the 2nd rung. Does this mean that people like Shifu who are on the 4th rung are FARTHER on their journey? No, not in the least. The direction of the ladder is completely wrong. Not misleading. It's wrong. Its like saying the food ladder is pizza then burgers then sushi then mayonnaise-covered chocolate. If you are not eating mayonnaise-covered chocolate, yet, you are far behind.
    This approach forces people to reach a destination that is based on FEES (lowest to highest). It is not based on goals/purpose.
    The correct analogy is the Credit Card FORK 🍴(ignore the knife, I couldn't find an emoji of just a fork). Let me explain.
    The handle of the fork is like what tier 1 of the credit card ladder is. It is for building/repairing credit... and its the foundation for everybody.
    The fork splits into THREE tines (tines are prongs on a fork...) These three tines are equal in length and height, and they run parallel to each other. So if you are on tine #1, you are not above/below tine #2 or tine #3.
    Tine #1 is team cash back. This is for people who are happy where they are and have no desire to travel. They can be satisfied looking at a picture of the sphinx rather than standing in front of it. This is similar to the 2nd rung on the ladder.
    Tine #2 is team travel. This is for people who can make use of hotels and air travel. Note that some cards may exist in multiple tines (like the Freedom Flex can be in tine #1 for 5% cash back, but it can also be in Tine #2 for a travel setup). This is similar to the 3rd and 4th rung on the ladder.
    Tine #3 is for team status. These are insecure people who feel inadequate and need something to flex, so they clang their card on tables to say, "My genitals aren't small! I swear!" They like to make waitresses/waiters feel jealous, being in the presence of a "real" human being, which the waitress/waiter is not. This is the 5th rung on the ladder.
    You should do a new video on the corrected "Credit Card Fork".

    • @MarkReese
      @MarkReese  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for sharing your perspective & all the details behind it, Icarus! Totally get what you're saying. The fork analogy can make sense.
      I'd say the ladder is only 'wrong' if it is championed as either a One-Size-Fits-All approach or as The One & Only Approach.

That These companies send to the credit bureau‘s every month? What credit limits do you have on your cards what credit utilization Are you at every month? That’s what they look at. Credit score only tells how good you are at juggling and income only tells that you can pay off the cards the loans that they give you

    interesting. I didnt really know anything about credit cards when i was younger. so i screwed up and almost all went to collections or I canceled them. I paid everything off of what was in collections recently (which was like $3000) now I am rebuilding with my secured capitol one card that I just got. my credit score is roughly around 20 points or a bit more from being good. So I am wondering how long this will take me before I can get the cards I do actually want.

      Well done on getting your credit situation on a better path 💯 I don't have a way of saying how long it'll take to rebound, but more important is doing the right things to guarantee it happens.

      Stick to issuers that have reliable soft pull pre-approval applications like Discover and American Express, and you can start right now testing the waters. The Discover It or AMEX Blue Cash Everday are very solid tier 2 cards.

    How long do you recommend waiting between your last credit card and applying for a home loan? Does the answer change based on if it's a business or personal card?

      There isn't a set rule for that. I'd personally go 6+ months, and ideally 12 months. Does not matter if it's business or personal.
