    Turkish Bath is a huge part of the Islamic culture. Hamams have been around for over 1000 years and this time I went to a local cheap Hamam for a rough Turkish bath experience in Istanbul.

    I traveled around Turkey for 12 days in 2006 and had 4 hamam experiences in 3 different areas of the country (2 in Istanbul, 1 in Sirince and 1 in Goreme). They were all excellent. Next time you should try the foam massage. It is totally amazing too. The way your body feels after all of this is fantastic.

    Years ago, I had one of the best hamam experiences in Bursa. The building was over 500 years old it was amazing just the history alone was enough after going through the ritual i took a nap for around 15 minutes in the cabin, then had my cup of tea near the fire place, then walked outside to snow i felt like a new born baby.

      I was just about to come into the comments to point out the same thing.
      It may be logical for a foreign individual to think of Türkiye as an Islamic culture thanks to the unfortunate and passive culturally appropriative image that the U.S. has labelled us with. I say this as a Turkish-Canadian who has experienced this countless times throughout my life growing up in a Western country as a first-gen. Perpetuating such an image to foreigners discredits the fact that we had a secularist revolution a century ago-one of the first revolutions of its kind. It also discredits the fact that since the constitutional amendment in 1928, Türkiye has had no official religion. In the mid-1920s, post-revolution, we opted towards wearing hats instead of fezzes and head coverings that represented the religious imperialism we wanted to free ourselves of. If you Google photos of us in that era, you’ll see us with our hair uncovered & wearing classic cloche hats and other fashions of the ‘20s-because as a secular society, we are given the freedom of choice not to be visibly Muslim or have the cultural elements that come with it. This sets us apart from other predominantly Islamic countries, and choosing to represent us as an Islamic society will only Arabize and Middle Easternize our culture in a way that it makes all Islamic countries seem like they’ve been lumped together as one race, one culture, and one ethnic category. Türkiye is not religiously fundamentalist. Furthermore, the Hamam concept originated from the Romans, and was not inherently religious. Other cultures then took that idea and modified it in the way that they all respectively wanted. The Turkish Hamam does not have religious undertones to it. It’s more of a place to simply decompress, freshen up, and have a good time. The fact that there are male Hamams and female Hamams is not gender apartheid-linked; it is rather for obvious reasons based on hygiene and privacy.
      No hard feelings. I just hope I clarified a few things. I hope you have a wonderful time in Türkiye. 🙂

    The reason why lisu wasnt allowed is probably the lack of a "natır", the female version of the "tellak", Ahmet was a tellak. Its most likely due to women choosing to meet up in certain hamams in groups, some hamams dont get female clients so they dont need a natır

    Aaah I miss Hamams there aren't any where I live now. Loved watching this. This is I must say is a rather posh Hamam, changing rooms, individual shower cabins etc. The ones I went to were beutifully tiled but you lay on that tiled floor in a big wet room along with everyone else and the guy spraying with hot hot water, cold water, soap, water is running all the time, its a slippery foam party but you just lie there being taken for the ride being thrown around the floor, in the nicest safest way. No one wore clothes except the Indian style cloth they give you (same you got) but the guy soon takes it off and reaches every where, I mean nothing is left unclean, no one cares everyones eyes are shut anyway. This was mostly in the Latin Quarter of Brussels and Paris. Yah you do feel so pampered and clean and connected. It's true almost a spiritual journey, rebirth. Don't worry everyone's skin comes off in this quantity except locals who go once a weak maybe. I've never been to a mixed gender hamam don't think they exist or if they do the womans and mens are seperate they would have seperate entrances. Yes tourist Hamams are just expensive and not very authentic, dumbed down maybe.

    Please be careful in different countries going with a person you don’t know. You hear stories of all over the world of tourists that get in bad situations like that. Just be safe.

    I went to a Turkish bath in a famous city, it was brutal! I can’t remember if I was naked or not, but anyhow, I got beat with those leafy things and worked over that I thought I was going to be dead and then they threw me in the sauna and I thought I had died.

    I've had a couple of Turkish baths, in Istanbul, and my understanding, regarding the wearing of clothes, is, they prefer you naked, but be careful not to "display" the genitals, hence the "loin" cloth t cover your modesty. The baths are just that, places to get clean. Glad you had a good experience.

    Hamam is rough, I guess you can relate to nordic sauna as well. It is just an experience, should be hot, bubbles, rubbing the skin off and then go to cold water. It used to be in old times that people had to bath once a week to really get clean, as we did not have always hot water available for shower.

    • @WildVikingTravels
      @WildVikingTravels  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The historic background of hygiene, hamams and saunas is interesting as I believe that the background is similar: if people only washed themselves once a week (as was the case in Nordic countries as well) it has to be through. Thank you for you comment here 😊🙏
