  • I've taken on a ridiculous project: to restore a vintage Sony/MCI MXP-3036 recording console.
    I don't entirely know how to do this, but I'll figure it out as I go and hopefully come out with an amazing peice of vintage audio history to use in my studio.
    In part 4, I sort out why there was smoke and work towards having a fully funcional console.

    Doing a magnificent job. It is worth it. Great console. You are doing all of us who love music production a great service with this restoration. Plus, you will have a tool that will make your recordings sing. I’m in awe,

      Thanks. Besides being excited about an amazing peice of analogue tech, I really felt a desire to keep history alive and functioning as long as possible. I wish more people would take the time to do so.

    Thats some dedication. This is an example what the will of one person can mean and what can be acheived once a goal is set and the willingness to grind is there.

    Wow...you've got some thick skin. Thanks for continuing to share updates. That is quite the commitment.

      Thank you. I think we refer to it as "Obsessive" here. ;-) But I'll take thick skinned as well.

    Love the name of the episode....took my baby away....one of my favorite tracks from Agents of Fortune

      Great tune, but it's from the album with the same name "A Fire of Unknown Origin". I used to have the poster and those Blue Oyster acolytes with their freaky red eyes used to freak out all the girls. ;-)

      @@EdgetoneStudios Yes it is however, there is a version (bonus track) (track 11) on Agents of Fortune that is really great. Check it out. Great videos!

    I can’t believe how patient you are. Thanks for documenting this restoration. The editing is probably the last thing you want to do after all this trouble shooting. Looking forward to part 5.

    • @EdgetoneStudios
      @EdgetoneStudios  ปีที่แล้ว

      They say Patience is a virtue, but I say it's a skill one has to practice. I began practicing as a kid sitting through hours of fillings in my soft teeth. ;-)
      You hit the nail on the head about editting. I love making videos, but the editting is tedious as heck. It took practically 6 hours to go through all those clips, overdub vocals, edit fades, etc. I'm getting slightly faster though as I learn Davinci Resolve.
      Thanks for the feedback.

    4 working channels is about as many as i had when i fired mine up before it drew the magic smoke. After that... Full recap! And even then there were multiple logic chips and opamps that were dead, fractured and stripped traces, and attempts of "repairs" from the previous owner that i had to re-repair. I found that using adhesive copper tape works great for trace repair and i had to do it A LOT!

    • @EdgetoneStudios
      @EdgetoneStudios  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow, you must be watching through the whole series.
      Currently at 36 working channels (with some issues) and now working to stabilize the power supply.

      @@EdgetoneStudios Yeah , i really empathize with the whole thing.. I'm glad that I'm not the only one in this.
      Btw the PSU is usually the 1st thing to rebuild regardless of whether it turns on or not then check the voltages and the plug the console in. Mine was squealing like a dying squirrel so I immediately shut it down.
      If you see any tantalum caps in there, replace immediately!
