This Ferrari 308 GTB Traces The Streets Of Bangkok Daily

  • This week we take a ride from the bustling city streets of Bangkok to the winding rural roads just outside the capital in Chayanin Debhakam’s Ferrari 308 GTB.
    In Thailand, just catching a glimpse of a Prancing Horse out of the stable is a rare occasion, but Chayanin’s choice to daily drive his Ferrari is what elevates his enthusiasm for the marque. Before you can see one in the wild though, the car needs to be brought in first, and sourcing a Ferrari in the BKK is an entirely different challenge for these buyers.
    “The 308 GTB is the Ferrari that I grew up with and it was the first Ferrari I ever saw,” says Chayanin. When it came time to find a Ferrari of his own, he reached out to the president of the Ferrari Owners Club of Thailand, who was able to find the car that Chayanin now drives so often. “He finally found one and it was exactly what I was searching for.”
    Once he had the Rosso-Corsa-on-crème GTB parked in his garage, Chayanin did some research and discovered the car was originally Fly Yellow over black leather-another victim to “resale red.” This is when his quest for perfection began, “I wanted to restore the car back to the original factory standard.”
    Using some extra workspace at his office, Chayanin (with repair manual in hand) got to work. Singlehandedly tackling this project would have been tremendous, but Chayanin fortunately has a group of enthusiast friends who brought their individual talents to the table. Chayanin humbly admits, “Some of them have different skills than me. I don't know everything [and] cannot do everything myself, so having extra help and knowledge is great.”
    In recent years, tracking down correct 308 parts has become quite the task, but Chayanin was unwavering in achieving his vision, stating that his ultimate goal was to have it drive and feel as it did when it left the factory. His obsession to return the car back to factory spec went as far as buying a new old stock (NOS) exhaust system to ensure the Italian eight-cylinder audio system was accurate. Finally refinished in flashy Fly Yellow with beautifully stitched black hide inside, Chayanin’s 308 GTB is back to the way Maranello intended it to be.
    For many, pouring so much time and money into such a serious project would make driving the car an overly cautious event only to be indulged on occasion and only under ideal circumstances. But, as you can see in the film, Chayanin has no problem revving-out his favorite Ferrari, getting tail happy in the empty forest-lined roads-after all, it is his everyday 308.

      Sold my 1975 308 GT4 in Oct. Bought it in 1991, friend said buy it, or you'll be kickin' yourself in the ass for the rest of your life. Mortgaged the house to buy it. Did all my own maintenance on it- ign, brakes, shocks, carbs, belts, etc. very easy car to work on, plus really didn't require much after initial sorting out. Used almost daily in the summer, proved every bit as reliable as any of it's US/Japanese/German contemporaries. Only mods were a K&N air filter and 16" Ferrari mags- handled great in the twisties, and made a great high speed tourer. Fine example of a true GT car. If you searched thoroughly parts were reasonably priced. I'd always said I hoped I could afford one before I was too old to enjoy it- found out I was just 'mature' enough not to kill myself in it. Now I'm too old to get in and out of it like a young man, so it's gone to a new home. I'd highly recommend a 308 (prefer the GT4), probably the best 'real world' car they've produced yet.

      That's interesting to know. I'd heard it wasn't bad to work on, but not from someone who actually worked on it themselves.

    • @richardcovello5367
      @richardcovello5367 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi bluestudio, Very simple & easy to work on. Biggest problem after the pain in the small of the back from bending over the engine compartment is removing the front cam cover. I changed the points (twin double points distributor engine). Idle points were already bypassed, so the points kit for one distributor did both after lengthening one points lead. Bought 50' of spiral wound copper core plug lead to replace the carbon core stuff (ign rebuild cost less than $100.00 vs $450.00 for dealer parts and last for life). Brake pads from generic clutch & brake supply cost $59.00 vs $350.00. After 15 years float needles needed replacing. Stupid expensive, so chucked the old ones in the drill press, dressed 'em down til the wear groove was gone (brass), worked fine. Also bought a carb sync tool to balance the carbs- found out 3/16" i.d. clear pvc hose in the ear was more accurate. Did have a problem with the clutch throwout bearing- uneven wear, turned it upside down, that worked too. That's the total extent of problems during my ownership, if you don't count it's thirst for premium when you took it for a 'backroads beat-up' (highway cruising at 75mph gave 22mpg imperial).

      Sorry that you had to depart from your 308. I'm facing the same dilemma now that I'm 65 with some serious lower back and legs problems. Getting in/out of my very low riding car is getting difficult. I fear the moment I'll have to sell my precious lil' car. Oh well, at least I fully enjoyed it for the last 32 years... Kudos, sir.

    I think i have never seen a Ferrari actuall blend in into his environment that good.
    Usually they totally stick out, often in a bad way, this fits like it belongs there. Wonderful.
    Btw: Is it wrong to think this is one of the most beautiful Ferraris ever made when there are such other Masterpieces around from that Brand? I just love the stright forward 70s-80s look.
    Very well done Chayanin, your Car definetly puts a smile on my face :)

      It is the most aesthetically sorted design Ferrari ever implemented in a road car; this naturally includes 288 GTO.
      No other Ferrari (which means pretty much no other car) has as well-resolved a balance between curves and straights, surfaces vs. vents, thin vs thick - basically perfect proportions.
      275 GTB/4 or '84-'86Testarossa is/may be sexier...but not as perfect; certainly not as proportionally balanced as the 308.

    • @shaft9000

      I believe you meant Aston..anyway, sure - Although as far as design is concerned, rules are made to be broken lest progress be stifled. What was once state of the art, often settles into a status of mundane; whether by replication, imitation, convention etc. And on and on.
      It's a rather paradoxical recognition at the core (e.g. "the more things change...")...and I could blather on for three more paragraphs but I'll spare us.... 308s, yo! :0)

      I completely agree. The 308/328 and 288 GTO which are all based on the same Pininfarina design are among the best looking sports cars every made by anyone! For me It's the ultimate GT car design.

    • @marcryvon
      @marcryvon 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agree but for the Testarossa. When it came out, it was stunning for it's extremes, both body and engine. But now, I find it ugly. Too wide, huge side intake slats, looks like an obese porn star ! A great design lasts forever. Look at a 1963 Corvette StingRay: oh my god! Still magnificent after so many years. Same with the 308 GTS, GTBs, GTO (!)and of course the Dino on witch all those series where based on, timeless designs.

  • @gus.s
    @gus.s 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I didn't like the 308 very much ever since I had one as a toy car. Always thought that it didn't look right... the front was too long... the wheels were weird looking... all that black trim... but this video changed everything!
    It does look sooo much better in yellow! The stance is just right, the proportions are spot on. It just "clicked", and it all make sense now. This one is now my favorite Ferrari.
    Congrats to the owner and Petrolicious for making this beautiful video.

    Hear that people? He said driving this old Ferrari pedal to the metal is more fun than driving a powerful car. And I have no reason to doubt him. I worry for younger car enthusiasts...I don't think the current obsession with power and speed is good for car culture. Cars shouldn't bore you when you are going at highway speeds.

    This is one of my favorite videos from Petrolicious. Beautiful 308, love the yellow, and I absolutely love the fact that owner went through the trouble of repainting it and bringing it back to the original spec (Although maybe it needed to be repainted and reupholstered anyways, he didn't really talk about the condition he got it in). Nothing better than an old original car. Super cool owner, I like that he talked about how the first thing he does is buy the manual for the car and likes to actually study the car. And of course, beautiful cinematography as always.
    The only thing I wish is that you guys had a second channel or something where you further talked about the cars. As in, you keep doing these awesome videos, but then have a second channel where you just casually talk and interview the person about the car and get into more specific stuff about it. I think that would be nice

    Another fabulous film from Petrolicious.. Mr Debhakam and I don't share a spoken language, but we do share an unspoken language, the language of cars - and Mr Debhakam is fluent. Big respect Mr D.

    I never paid any mind to this car the first time I saw it. I didn't think much of the 308, it didn't seem particularly fast or beautiful the first time but the more I look at it, and the faster and more complicated modern cars become, I can finally understand the beauty of a car like this.
