    I have Autism and I wish more people wouldn't compare this to stupidity :/

      It’s annoying because autism helps with so many things. The more experience you gain in life, you’ll become smarter than anyone. The “common sense” stuff you don’t get at first will stick with you and you’ll be “normal” and remembering everything you’re taught in the snap of a finger and solving problems and creating ideas normal people cannot come up with. There’s certain things we strive at.

      Yes, that's absolutely true. I have an older sister who for sure is high on the Autism spectrum. Most of her life she's been labeled as "stupid" To me it's such an insult and down right very cruel to be labled "Stupid"

      Yeah my younger brother has autism but he is one of the smartest people I know. When he does his math homework he doesn't need to write anything down. He just does it in his head and he's able to tell me definitions of words that I have never even heard of before. He may be autistic but he is far from ever being dumb.

    Fun fact about the Pokemon games, it has autism references. Like for one, there are towns people that always go like "you made eye contact with me, lets battle" expressing just how scary it is to even make eye contact with any stranger. You feel like you are being challenged by every one when you look at them in the eye or when your eyes meet or when they look at you

      My thoughts today: Me I’m me, accept me and it’s fine, if you don’t, I do not even care anymore. You’re not needed in my life. It’s taken me 40+ years to be able to say this.

      GhostbustersFan77 first off, not all in the autistic spectrum are savants. Second, I personally don't like the label because it's almost meaningless considering the diversity within the spectrum. I have Aspergers and the last thing I want is a social justice movement making a big deal out of it. That said, it'd be nice if it wasn't an insult, but I also could care less. I find it rather autistic of myself not to care about such things lol. I think many people in history are likely to have had autistic tendencies. Victimizing ourselves does us no good. Continuing to overachieve does, as it always has.

      Cheer up. There's a lot up ahead. Past can't be changed, but your future... Now that's something you can change, starting today. Forgive, let go and find "them". There's a lot of people who will love you and to whom you'll be invaluable. So stick to them, or go find them, because they are out there. They will bandage your wounds from the past and eventually you'll heal.

      I am now 61, was never diagnosed in the early/mid 60s, I know now that my growing up was all about. My parents both knew something was different, but we took it in our stride. Here is a glimpse of my growing 'pains'
      i crawled till i was 2, suddenly stood and walked. From early in primary school, i developed a reclusive/rejection attitude, did not make friends easy, went through primary with one best friend, another david. Had severe 'phase outs - staying awake but mind is miles away, mums voice was sounding like echo in the distance, maybe 5 min long. Was dead scared in a restaurant to get up from my chair to go to the loo. Stuttered on nearly every third word, including my own name. Butt of jokes at school. both levels. Couldnt throw an overhead ball, as in cricket fielding. threw under arm further.!!! My one love was creativity. Art, woodwork, sculpting in clay, at 15 (74) it was turned to doing my own oil painting with Hobbytex (oil paint filled ball point tubes) an aussie company, through transitioning between primary and secondary, i had speech lessons, for a th 'problem'
      all this i lived through. grew out of the reclusiveness, and stuttering, and fear of people, my creativity is immense, except not learning stuff that is usually designated as female craft, (knitting, crochet, and sewing). Building a shed form my imagination, no written plans.

    Autism has both positive and negative effects, so it's not simply an illness. It's simply a phenotype, a trait formed from several alleles of certain genes. I know because I was born with middle-functioning autism, but proper treatment seems to have bumped me up to high-functioning. (I'm 18 at the moment.) Even those with low-functioning autism can still be taught to communicate using modern tech, such as certain smartphone apps, and if that is attempted, it becomes evident that they are just as intelligent as anyone, perhaps more in some cases.

      Asperger persons are unique like everyone and do some things better and other things worst than neurotypical people in general. Almost all of they have some other mental ilnesess and they usually have good visual perception. They are not all intelligent, but they can focus better than neurotypical people in their interets, and less in other stuff, with better perfomance. But there is a really big connection of Autism Spectrum and high intelligence, and that's why a lot of Asperger persons have high intelligence and a lot of intelligent people has Autism traits (not necessarily Asperger's Syndrome, because you can have only some traits, that indicates that you probably have Autism genes).

      My cousin has a son who is on the spectrum. She described his condition as how he perceives his environment: because of his neural wiring, his surroundings make little to no sense to him, yet at the same time he has an ability to see things from an entirely different perspective. Back in the day such a person would be lumped into the general and now politically-incorrect category of idiot savant.

    • @nevermore5792
      @nevermore5792 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@eclaire1748 It's about the support needs a person has. Nowadays, people usually don't use functioning labels though, because autism spectrum isn't really linear. Instead, it's more about the many different traits an autistic person can have, so basically, every trait is a "linear spectrum" (someone can be non-verbal, but can have no hypersensitivity for example, someone else can be fully verbal, but might not be able to leave the house for a long time, because they get to overwhelmed because the are so hypersensitive to sounds and light)

    I am 64 and was only diagnosed 7 years ago. Most of my life it hadn't even been identified as a disorder yet. It's been a hard row to hoe all alone with zero understanding or support from anyone, only criticism, rejection, etc. It was a relief to realize what the problem is and learn to accept myself. I am proud of myself for surviving all those years without help. It could have easily destroyed me but something in me never gave up hope and refused to surrender to depression.

    When I was a little kid, no one in my little rural town had heard of Asperger Syndrome. I wish someone would have told the people who were testing me for special education because I was slow. As it turned out, I was incredibly intelligent; I just couldn't find the words to say that my brain was processing things so fast that my physical self couldn't keep up. I've been HUGE into computers ever since my family first got one when I was about twelve because it gives me a social outlet where I don't have to be face-to-face with people.
    Also, Temple Grandin came to my college to give a speech. If you ever watch her talking, she's right on the money.

I became so much more focused and a lot better at my craft with this new found confidence. The comedian Hanna Gadsby said it best about being diagnosed. She said “it was as if I had gotten the keys to myself”.

If there's not a single entry level job in my entire country (America) that I can successfully perform and not be fired from due to misconduct, specifically misconduct that is not explained as misconduct, just expected to know is misconduct, then I am definitely disabled due to my autism.

    • @Parker8752
      @Parker8752 7 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      It's a disability, but primarily because we're expected to act like people that we're not. Our brains develop differently; it's society that has decided that difference is bad.
      And while there is such a thing as a healthy mind, autism isn't a mental illness, but being the way we're treated as a result of our autism can certainly lead to mental illness.

    I have autism and I love acting , singing, books, and computer programming. I have never heard of an actress that has autism before now, and it's fantastic to hear my exact reasons for acting shared by another person. I like acting because I know exactly what to do, what to feel, how someone is going to react, and I get to experience empathy in a safe way. I also like books for the same reason. I like programming because everything has a reason, you just have to find it. Humans don't always behave logically, which is frustrating.

    I've struggled my entire childhood due to people not understanding that my issues (neurological difficulties with balance, sounds, smells, light, textures) were due to a condition, not me being a difficult or lazy child.
    Now I struggle as an adult with prejudice. I was diagnosed in my late 20's, and whilst I myself had an eyeopener with the diagnosis, I've stopped sharing it with others. You distinctly see people change how they act once they know that you're different. I especially dislike it when they try to diminish and refer to it as some sort of "trendy diagnosis". Yeah, I LOVED struggling for all my school years, such a COOL fashion statement!!

I also, deal with social anxiety. I usually keep to myself, except for a few close friends. I have trouble making new friends, because I hate small talk. Plus, everyone just seems to view me as "awkward quiet guy" So it seems like most people try to avoid me if they can.

    in 3rd or 4th grade, i was diagnosed on the autism spectrum. since then, ive always felt different-not in a good way. i constantly feel like i dont belong in my family, in my group of friends, in my school, in my city etc. and its not exactly easy to feel good about it when my brother keeps mocking me for it. i havent told any of my friends that i have this diagnose, because i feel like they wouldnt take it too well. most of my teachers know that i have a diagnose, and so because of that i get "special" treatment in class, which i dont really like. it makes me feel like im even more different from the other students in school. i guess this video made me feel a little better about it, knowing that these people have acheived these things despite having autism/asperger.

      How old are you? My mom talked to me about Asperger's when I was around 14-15, and honestly, it made me feel a *lot* better. I spent my whole life with people asking, "What's wrong with you?" - to finally understand what it was that made everyone ask such a question of me, was simply brilliant. I actually ended up getting quite a lot of control over it, after I figured out exactly what I was doing that was not socially acceptable. Unfortunately, I feel I am starting to slip with it again in my 2nd year of College, with so much pressure in public speaking courses, but I am still miles better from where I started off. It really does get better.
      Also, there are some public forums dedicated to those of us on the spectrum- I might suggest going there if you need help from people who understand EXACTLY what is going on, and how you feel.

    Temple Grandin definitely inspires me. The kiddos I teach at my school who all have autism inspire me every day. They are amazing human beings and I love that I get to see their growth and watch them learn.
