Nice job Captain Dave! As a fellow sailor in Southern CA, I have seen the dolphin stampedes on several occasions between Palos Verdes and Catalina Island. It is a special moment to be surrounded by wildlife in their habitat. But never have I seen this wonder with such a spectacular POV as you have shared. Thank you!
Like all technology, drones are not inherently good or evil; they are simply tools to do the bidding of whoever is pulling the strings (or joysticks, as the case may be). You can point to all kinds of privacy issues with drones being in the air, and those are certainly valid. But then you can also show examples like this where we are getting data or information which may well have been completely unavailable to us otherwise. The trick is keeping technology in check so its negative uses can be limited, while leaving those who wish to use it positively with as much freedom as possible. Overreaching drone legislation could threaten the positive applications of the technology, so we must be very careful with that as time goes on.
That mother whale and her calf were just amazing. It sure looked like that baby was hugging its mother. Drones will forever change the things we see and the way we see them. How beautiful!
Breathtaking! I can only imagine how it felt like being in that boat! Such moving footage about the beauty and magnificence of these animals. Thank you for your work!
Absolutely amazing. Don't see any way you could ever get these scene on tape other than from a drone. Loved the humpback and her baby, and have never seen a dolphin "stampede." Thank you so much for sharing.
With drones like this, camera traps, web cams showing us even more of nature than ever before. How can one not give a damn about this amazing planet we live on.
***** I like the sentiment but sadly everyone does matter but not enough people have the will to do what needs to be done to save other species that are endangered either directly or indirectly by our actions.
I agree, we are now at the point in which we need to make some sacrifices in our lives to live in a way that slows down the rate we are ruining the planet..but many people have other things to worry about so they think, and wont be bothered to sacrifice things in their life styles.
Maphisto86 "Country's full of 'em now; people walking around all day long--every minute of the day worried about everything... Worried about saving endangered species. Let me tell you about endangered species, alright? Saving endangered species it just one more arrogant attempt by humans to control nature. It's arrogant meddling; it's what got us in trouble in the first place. Doesn't anybody understand that? Interfering with nature. Over 90%, way over 90%, of all the species that have ever lived on this planet--ever lived, are gone. They're extinct. We didn't kill them all. They just disappeared. That's what nature does. They disappear these days at the rate of 25 a day--and I mean irregardless of our behavior. Irrespective of how we act on this planet, 25 species that were here today will be gone tomorrow. Let them go gracefully. Leave nature alone. Haven't we done enough?" -George Carlin
VegasFirefly George Carlin was a master of comedy and had great insight on our bullshit but I don't take his words too seriously. It is obvious species are never meant to last indefinitely, including our own. That does not stop humans from wanting to continue to exist and thrive well into the future and while nature is indifferent to what species lives or dies we humans ought to tread lighter on this planet. If we are directly responsible for a species becoming extinct maybe shouldn't we stop such harmful behavior if we can?
Thank you Captain Dave Anderson , to you and to your wife for this wonderfull video. You help us see and connect with these magical creature from the ocean. I love dolphins and when i think at them i see in my mind joy and smiles. Thank you!
Thank you for sharing this video of an obviously new born calf. These huge creatures are so tender and gentle with one another. A perfect use of the drone - not to deliver grief and horror but deliver glimpses of the beauty and majesty we are fortunate to share the planet with. Thank you

This guy should be sponsored for the work he is doing, I think The drone creator's and GoPro should come together to make this guy some special drones that are waterproof, are buoyant and able to launch from water or a small floating launch pad. You could practice take-offs from the launchpad in safe harbour. many thanks for your dedication, I salute you.
Humpbacks are very gentle creatures. I've seen them with species much smaller than themselves... dolphins, sea lions and seals. They are so gentle with them. It's amazing. I'm not surprised that Mum is so gentle with her calf.
This is awesome, what a delight. Thank you for bringing us this beautiful and informative video. Because of it I now know how whale families are similar in nature to human families. Seeing the mother and child bond and the companion whale close by, brings awareness, respect and love for the natural world. May this video continue to circulate, broadening the perspectives and appreciation for all life forms in and out of the oceans.
Seeing the humpbacks whole like this... calfie doing that mammalian snuggle up to mom, suspended over blue nothingness... it's something that a person my age could only dream of seeing, for a long long time.
That baby.......pulls on my heart strings. Fabulous way to film so the animals can be in their natural state and yet get that incredible documentation. Thank You for this beautiful video ")
Captain Dave.. THANK YOU ! for sharing... YOU ARE "SO BLESSED" to see this.. I'm BLESSED to see what you recorded...such BEAUTY... my soul rejoices.. yes.. Thank God- THANK GOD ! :) :) :) :)
it's videos like these that make me want to go to places such as the cove and show it to the people there. (if you haven't seen that film, watch it. it's heartbreaking) i mean really, these creatures are so beautiful and majestic and peaceful and i'm sure it must have been an honour and a privilege for this man to see it up-close.
This is a Great step forward. As others here have mentioned .Tech & Nature going in the right direction.Thank you Capt. Dave & the Ms O'Brien for sharing this accomplishment..BEAUTIFUL!!!!!
OMG Captain Dave, this is the most glorious video ever. I contributed footage of blue whales on your documentary, and I'm so excited that you continue to move forward with some of the amazing technology available. I can't wait to get back to your boat!!! Thanks so much for sharing this!
I know. And part of the reason why I believe in Him is because of humpbacks. And that fact really triggers some fundamentalist Christians. I'm Christian BTW.
Man, I see something like that and it makes me wonder in awe at the amazing power of not only the Creator but of His beautiful creation as well. Why can't we be more like that? Just perfect, natural, and in tune with the world around us. The mother and baby whale made me see what we can be... true, honest, and real instead of what we seem to be. Thank you for sharing this with us... God bless you and yours.
Ive watched whales from my fathers sailboat in Dana Point and seeing this video..... I am fully convinced that THIS is by far the least intrusive to the whales and dolphins. Bravo sir!!! What a wonderful gift you have given us with this fine video which I shall share and keep to watch again. Great work!! Stay safe!
awesome. Capt Dave rocks! i was whale watching on Monterey Bay this week and we came upon a group of at least 1,000 commons. also i was sailing home from Catalina Isle one day with a massive hangover and our boat was followed nearly the whole way to Long Beach by a large friendly pod of Dolphins. Cured my hangover! :-)
One of the most beautiful videos of dolphins and whales i have ever seen.Beautifully shot, the music fits perfectly.Thank you for posting this,i have subscribed to you ad look forward to your next adventure!
Sadly Scientists predict that most marine life will be dead by 2048 due to climate change, overfishing and pollution. These videos are more important than ever, because these creatures won't be on this planet in a few decades. Already in the past decade we have had a 30% collapse in ocean fish stocks. I would recommend people read the study Worm, B. et al (2006) Impacts of biodiversity loss on ocean ecosystem services.
IF and I say IF you ever get the chance to video another mother & child that soon after birth or even during, drop a microphone over the side and mate them together! I would love to hear that conservation between not only the two but the escort! What would you have gathered as it came up to the boat? But great videos. And by all means stay above legal to keep those others quiet! Blue Sky's and Safe Journeys
Amazingly beautiful, thank you for making this and reminding us that we share the planet with wonderful beings! The music is also perfect with the video.

This is why we need citizens with drones. We learn so much about the things around us we never would have seen from down here.

wow - just wow!
Great images. The BBC made an amazing documentary about the life of dolphins using drones. Some of the images are superb.

Titi Van Boerhan I'm pretty sure the whale and a dolphin get along.
Very Cool!

That was a whale mother and her babe. Not a dolphin. The dolphins were swimming in huge numbers at the front of the video.
PERFECTION - I loved the baby whale snuggling up to his mum awwww xxxx
