Back when our nation was being born he’s the kind of feller who woulda been a huge asset to his community. I think there was a time when there were many more like him but he’s quite a rare man these days. We are lucky that he’s willing to fool with cameras and editing to make these videos so we can all understand how it was done and have a record going forward into history. A genuine treasure.

You nailed saying each type of wheel has its own unique personality.
I originally thought you’d have the felloes cover 3 spokes each to counter the alignment of the spokes but the grain direction is important as you explained.

I was just at Hartwick Pines in Grayling MI. They have one of these . It carries the log under it. Theirs is getting to be in rough shape though.
I'd never appreciated the workmanship that went into one of these, until I came across your channel.
    Thanks

In today's 3D modeling, computer dominated manufacturing world, this project would have started with laser scans of those iron hubs. And then CNC driven cutting, milling and lathes to craft the spokes and fellows. But where's the challenge or handcrafted pride in that!? I love Dave's commitment to preserving the Wheelwright trade.

Hi Dave and Diane ☺, it's just amazing how those feloes are coming together, and that's the result of alot of thinking, working out the angles. And a whole wagon load of skill ,and experience, Dave you never cease to astound us whith your craftsmanship, many thanks for taking the time to show us this, it's appreciated, best whish's to you and Diane, Stuart and Megan UK

Hi Dave, and Diane, these logging wheels are really looking beautiful. These have just been a lot of work from the very start, and you have been on top of all the issues. Now it's paying off, and so amazing how you have managed to keep the accuracy going throughout this project. Thank you for sharing, and take care.

I have to admit that again I totally misjudged this build. As a retired dentist of 76 y/o that might be forgivable. I thought, with somebody else having all the trouble making the hub, „all you need to do“ is putting in some spokes and fellows and tighten some nuts. Boy was I ever so wrong! This has you fighting every step with unusual angles, tension that you normally don‘t have and all that with a weight and size that is easily equal to a whole buggy! But when I got thrown a curveball like that in my line of business I always told myself: „If it was easy, everybody else could have done it!“ This build is suspense and a challenge with every step. But solving puzzles and dealing with challenges you, Sir, are the Hercule Poirot of the wheelrights! Thanks for documenting all this because unfortunately we do not see you teach some eager young fellow to carry on (one should think they would stand in line at your shop in the morning). Our youth does not seem to appreciate an honest day of hard work with their hands any more. Thank you and your wife for going the extra mile and taking us along!

Yeah, a lot of my jobs I have to figure it out as I go along. Ideally, I like to do the whole job in my mind ahead of time, rather than improvise as I go along. Very enjoyable video. I saw big wheels like this at the museum near Flagstaff, AZ many years ago. I think they were used when they logged off the old growth Ponderosa Pines there. If I ever come back to America, I sure want to come visit you.

I have to admit. been watching you for years now. seen you do this play with the fellows, hundreds of times and it always amazed me how well they always came together. but these above and below spokes. gave me pause. even though I understood your logic in the beginning when you were doing the spindles. I had my doubts. on their alignment with the fellows. all aligning. And they are dead on. so my apologies for even having the slightest doubt and I willingly eat my crow. and applaud your engineering and craftsmanship. .ECF
