I just got back from the EAA Airventure at Oshkosh. There are airshows every day of the meet. There had ab F-15EX, F-22, F35, F-16, A-10, FA18’s. The Blues and T-Birds did fly bys, the Canadian Snowbirds performed as well as the Italian Frecce Tricolori show team. It was my first time at the show and it was Fantastic! When the military pilots fly, everyone pays attention and there is a palpable feeling of excitement running through the crowd.

Airshows provide the public with the sounds of freedom and an appreciation for the military members

      Most airshow performances are civilian.

I love air shows. We go to the Dayton air show every year. They alternate every year with the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels as the main performers. Watching those military jets perform gives you a feeling of pride. 🇺🇸

Per Ardua Ad Astra. May he rest in peace.
The M-346 displayed at RIAT Fairford last weekend (19th - 21st July) - it was poignant seeing that aircraft perform an amazing routine...

I lost a good friend (who I went through Basic Training with) who was killed in a Snowbird Mid-Air Collision in the Toronto airshow in September 1989.

flying high performance aircraft is DANGERIOUS!! Always has been always will be.. Pushing them to the limit narrows the failure chain to slim margins.

Very sad news. Our hearts go out to those impacted by this tragic loss.. But those reactionary comments about airshows are not constructive in a situation like this. Airshows will always have their place, and an overwhelming majority of them are very safe events with event holders and participants taking painstakingly thorough precautions.

Airshows are a mainstay for recruiting. You can get young boys and girls hooked at a super young age. The Snowbirds use to perform at the local airport behind my house every year in the 80s and early 90s. I was hooked. Then Top Gun came out, hooked moreso. Then I actually got to see a real Fighter and hearing the raw power of a CF-18 Hornet being louder then all the Snowbirds combined I was Zoned in for the rest of my life. I still haven't gotten to ALPX, its on my bucket list along with OshKosh because its different. I found a hidden gem airshow thats a drivein style 4 years back called Airshow London, Skydrive. I go down every year 7+hrs drive 1 way for all 3 days at $200 /a day because its per carload. I've gone completely alone or brought family and friends for free. As you can tell I am still hooked.

Airshows are fantastic, and the Safety Record for modern airshows is high when operating under established and proven parameters. As for the pilots, no one made them fly because they love to fly and every pilot knows that it only takes one mistake or malfunction to kill. Now, some believe that they can get away with operating outside certain boundaries, until they crash. The point is that pilots make choices, as we all do, and those choices include all the consequences. Because I chose to drive to work today, I accepted all risks associated with that action. Certainly, it doesn't mean that if someone else is operating their vehicle outside the boundaries of good driving and their choice causes injury or damages that I won't sue them.

Why do we have air shows? Why not ask why do we have car racing? Or why do we have high wire acrobatics? I could go on. Because they're cool and fun to watch, and the ones putting on the shows love entertaining people. It's unfortunate when incidents happen, but they are an opportunity to learn so it doesn't happen again.

I do love airshows, but I also sometimes wonder about whether we should rethink low altitude loops or split-s's. I could be wrong, but it really seems like the majority of airshow accidents happen during these two maneuvers.

The way American airshows were flown in the 1970’s and 80’s isn’t like today. They were flown much closer to the crowd. Even over the crowd

Do the Blues or 'Birds zero out their altimeters at air shows? By the the way, the FAA has started a 3 mounth evaluation of Southwest Airlines operations. With all the tom foolery going on there it is warranted in my mind as a retired SWA pilot.

If I remember from an interview, they set the altimeter so that it reads 0' at field elevation, so no matter where they are, they don't have to remember new altitudes.

If the Blue Angels flew 6 feet apart rather than 3 feet apart, would it totally ruin any airshow they did? If the solo flew within 25 knots of stall rather than 10 knots from stall during a slow pass, would the crowd be totally disappointed? Is it required that teams get as close to the edge of flight as possible for the airshow to inspire and thrill people?
