I was thinking of getting some red silicone and fill the empty shell with it and let it squirt out the primer's hole (after removing the primer). That will leave a red silicone strike area for the firing pin to hit. What say you?

Nice! However, I don't want real bullet. I have some used cases that I'll make dummy rounds with using some plastic/hot glue for bullet. No chance for confusion on firearm.

Just don't slam the cartridge through the die. My family has only had a live primer go off once, and it was because my dumbass brother was trying to do things as fast as possible, and slammed the handle down while decapping a cartridge with the live primer.

I like a hole in the case so there is no mistaking the round is not loaded. Even with a struck primer you don't know for sure it is not a live round. Before removing a live primer, like you said, use some WD-40 or oil and soak it for awhile. When you tap on that anvil you can get a bang. Where I went to gunsmith school there was a case in which a student used a 45 ACP "dummy" round to check operation of his gun. At least he claimed it to be a dummy round and it had a dent in the primer from a firing pin/striker. Anyway, it went off hitting him in the head and killing him. Therefore at Lassen College they no longer allow any dummy rounds in the shop or classroom. Thanks for the video, I liked it.

In theory you could paint it if you don’t have a drill

    • @TheHobbyGunsmith

i wouldnt do so because the paint build up will cause the cases to get stuck in the chamber.

You can, just add a projectile and seat like you would any other round, and fill the primer pocket with rubber or plastic of some sort.

Just to add, even commercially made dummies that are made like these won't last forever. A lot depends on how often they are used. Repeated chambering will cause the bullet to walk forward creating a long round. If there'are repeated failures to feed, especially if the bullet stubs in to the feed ramp, the bullet can be set back into the case. If you use your dummies for shooting drills, inspect them for damage after each drill session. Replace them as necessary.
A suggestion, if you have acess to a reloading press and the approprate dies, apply a heavy crimp to the bullet when seating it in the case. This will slow down the migration of the bullet in the case.
Dummy cartridges are a must when checking modifications or repairs at the workbench, Never use live rounds for this purpose. Save the live rounds for the range. Hobby Gunsmith shows you how to make some for just a few cents each so there is no excuse for not having some.

Why not just put the shell in chamber and let the pin strike the primer to deactivate it?

@@TheHobbyGunsmith sorry. I was not trying to be funny. And sorry for my lack of knowledge on this. What I meant is. After the bullet and gun powder been removed. All u have left is the brass shell and the in strikes primer. Could u load it in the chamber and pull the trigger to let the pin strike at the primer to deactivate it? So the final product is a striked primer in the brass shell , then put the bullet back without powder. In another word, do you have to hit the primer on the plate to remove it from the butt of the brass shell? Sorry I’m new to this. Not sure if I asked a dumb question or not.

@@illcatlan no worries, I completely understand. Yes you can go that route. Just make sure you drill the side of the casing or mark in some sort of visible way where you can differentiate live ammo from dummies.

Careful with inspecting ammo, on the crow( with Brandon Lee) primers were neither removed nor deactivated, and possibly not marked due to negligence

    • @TheHobbyGunsmith
      @TheHobbyGunsmith  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

If you mean using a spent casing i would not recommend as the casing when fired expands so it will not be ideal. if instead you mean once you have pulled the bullet and powder out to just leave the primer in, you can but it would be in essence the same thing as not having anything there because that dent will be formed as deep as the firing pin strike not giving it any support so it would not be ideal.

@@TheHobbyGunsmith Birchwood Casey makes a brass blackening solution. Most of the commerical "action proving rounds" (Winchester) I saw and used were stained black. The hole in the cartridge case is an outstanding idea and was (used?) on the dummies made for the military. As I recall, they had two holes 180* apart from each other.

Drill the side of the case, dump the powder, drill a hole down the center of the bullet. Detonate the primer in your handgun. Then drop some glue in the case hole.

I'm not sure if drilling into the side of the live case would be very safe. That is why I prefer the method of pulling and dumping powder our.
