Landing the Bush Bonanza on the Highway

- We took the STOL Bonanza to the 1600ft backcountry grass runway at Dug Bar on the Snake River, but (after a thorough bath) our lunch stop lacked an airport, so we landed on the highway for burgers and shakes at Fields Station. And I finally let someone else fly the plane.

Outside of a emergency I’ve never considered landing on a road. But it looks like the local customs accepts and encourages such things. Where else can you get a gas and a milkshake but there. I remain opened minded to the concept.

Brings a smile to my face…my uncle used to be employed by the state of Illinois to fly the governor around. I flew with him many times and heard all the stories about landing biplanes in cow pastures. Thank you. This is fun entertainment.

I like the engine background audio, very nicely implemented, subtle and low on the wind noise.
Happy to see Matt adding more discussions of the safety precautions he follows on his videos. I roll my eyes a bit when I see someone post one of the "engine out right here and you're a dead man" comments. The theme of Matt's videos are aviation ADVENTURE videos. You're not going to be able to eliminate all danger when seeking adventure especially of the aviation variety but I believe Matt's themes are centered around trying to convey to his audience that by intelligent flight planning, taking proper care and precautions, and situational awareness you can minimize the dangers while having some amazing adventures in small personal aircraft.
ADKPatriot Sound Retreat “adventurous pilot” is something I’ll be happy to never be categorized as. Do all the nerd calculations you want, a gust of wind, animal runs out into the road, or any of the million things that can and eventually WILL go wrong when pulling stunts like this should be an HD example of what not to do. What’s that saying about old pilots and bold pilots? Or the big bag of luck and little bag of experience? Kid thinks he’s smarter than he is. Just like the doctors and lawyers who get comfortable operating outside the envelope. 99 times out of 100 it’ll workout. Until the day it doesn’t.
All the nonchalant stuff is on video; all the serious hand wringing and calculating and planning that make it possible is not.
Matt: you remind me a lot of My father as a young man. He flight demoed all the piston Beech products and co-owned numerous V35's from a 48 with 185 horse to a 59 k35 with the io470. Through out his youth growing up in Boise I thought everyone flew into remote strips in the back country. In his youth he would accumulate 10,000hrs in DC3's with West Coast Airlines. For additional income he flew charters, often flying state representative's from all over go Boise. In 1958 we would purchase property at Pistol Creek Ranch on the Middle Fork of the Salmon. He would go on to accumulate another 10,000hrs in the F27 while I was young, and flew aerial mapping for the state of Idaho aeronical division. This involved taking a stripped down P38 with camera equipment as high as it would go flying back and fourth over Idaho taking high resolution mapping pictures. He would move up to the DC9 in my early teens accumulating another 10k of hours and retired off the 757 after 4000hrs. And a total of over 36,000 hours In his entire career he proud to say he never dented a plane or injured a passenger.
What made me think of all of this is your combination of professionalism, good judgement, and a culture of safety.
As a child I remember he was fanatical about safety stating "Never put yourself in a position where it takes 100% of you and your planes ability to get of it." "Leave yourself some wiggle room".
Since often the planes of his day were chronically under powered it was early morning late evening and know, not guess but know what your density altitude is, your weight, stall and take off distance is. More than once I watched him cancel a flight because it had gotten too warm to take off from a 6k high strip. We would fly N6075E, his 59k to Alaska, Fairbanks, old Crow, Tuttoyatutte(sp) on the Arctic Ocean. Go fishing at Fort Franklin on Great Bear Lake, and all the western providences.
You demonstrate the same level of love, enthusiasm, and passion for flying he did. Often I would hear from his copilits that he would still hand fly the 757 simply because he ,loved to fly.
He had his fair share of adventures over the years. He was a voracious reader of anything flying, worked with the NTSB and read virtually every accident that happened. A practice I encourage others to do!

It's kinda odd seeing field/dirt landings (as a matter of practice) done on tricycle gear. And retractable at that! It's a testament to his skill that he's never damaged his nose gear with all his casual bush style landings and takeoffs.
Additionally, I've never seen a Bonanza setting away from pavement either.
He gives this Beech a real workout.

I would have never thought you could just land a plane on a country road and then just pull into a parking lot of a burger joint just to have a bite to eat. Just the cool factor of that alone is a 10.
Love this! We ate at Fields Station over Spring Break 6 weeks ago. And yes, aircraft land there all the time. Things are a little different in that part of Oregon! :)

The videos with Matt's friend are always nostalgic for me. I grew up in San Jose. I remember when my school, SJSU, moved their aviation school from SJ International to Reed Hillview. I also remember as a kid, going to Eastridge Mall and Raging Waters near Reed Hillview. San Jose still feels like home.

I’ve done my entire PPL on a short soft field in Switzerland (LSZK). 650m grass RWY. Surely gets you used to such short fields when flying in and out of there so often.

Good burgers and milkshakes...and love the owners with open carry. I ride through this area occasionally and do the back-road way to Gerlach. And Steens Mountain and natural hot springs in the area are fun too!
Once I hit the jackpot or otherwise gain enough loose change, the Bonanza will be a top choice. It's not without a reason these birds do _everything_ and wash the dishes..

But wasn't he wrong? He figured a nautical mile using 5280 feet which is a statute mile. A nautical mile is about 6076 feet. Luckily he underestimated the distance and still figured he had enough.

Another fun video. Off airport landings really show the versatility of the Bonanza design that Walter Beech made in 1947. Smart! That was a massive amount of bugs in Oregon. Loved all the in cockpit negotiations for both of those challenging landings. Stuart Station looked interesting and like that local content you add to your video. Also, you are lucky to have Owen as a partner in these adventures.

Fields station is the last place I landed my plane. Definitely not a good place to have a mechanical. No one had an issue with landing on the road- the FAA, State Patrol, or the insurance company.

At the end of this video that SQL segment was quite a surprise. That was just about the most perfect San Carlos segment ever. "Bit of crosswind from the left." "A little gusty." And of course talking to 5 towers in 10 minutes. Great editing. I learned to fly at SQL and flew traffic watch in the bay, so your segment really connected with me.

I think I remember seeing Matt say in another video that all his videos usually involve a coordinated effort of a crew of 4 people including himself... So, I guess he plans all his trips in advance and sends one or two members of the crew earlier to the destinations to capture such shots...

I’ve rafted that area many times! I’m just across the water from Seattle so heading East over the cascades is a great trip to those remote areas between Idaho, Washington and Oregon.

At Fields, Oregon, the road IS the airport. They'll give you gas too. You mentioned Imnaha, Oregon. I love that country. From there it is another 40 miles along the ridge tops to Hat Point. It is lovely there.

I was just at Fields Station in November while overlanding OR -> NY. I thought it was cool you were flying so close to where I was at the Alvord Hot Springs. Then you landed where I had breakfast! Absolutely unreal! What a workhorse that c̶h̶e̶r̶o̶k̶e̶e̶ Bonanza is! Keep it up!

There is a little town called Alzada in the extreme southeast corner of Montana that has a bar right on HWY 212 and the local ranchers land their planes and park them at the bar sometimes.....pretty good grub and a good straight shot outta town
Those are Grasshoppers. When they enter their gregarious phase after the ending of prolonged drought plus a concomitant rapid revegetation and swarm is when they are called Locusts.

Just followed your landing at Dug Bar airport and decided to try it myself on Microsoft Flight simulator 2020. Newbie keyboard Pilot was flying there using VOR headings and made it to this same location. Although I didn't experience any grasshoppers, but it looks just like it did in real life in this video. Cool! Even the gentle slope up at the end of the runway.
