This is heartbreaking to watch, but an extremely valuable resource for anyone that wishes to see how the ground looked two full years after the club vacated. I've been trawling the Internet looking for pictures of the derelict Valley for ages now, so this was perfect for me - thank you for uploading it. And UP THE ADDICKS! ⚽️❤

I broke into the Valley the day after the hurricane that wasn’t and I got some amazing photos of the place. My Nan took me to Charlton to see my 1st ever football match and I was just blown away by the place.

The 89 for me. Unfortunately I put it in an envelope - and left it there. Never occurred to me that it might require light and water🙄

Amazing footage. Thanks for publishing. I’ve just watched this with my 10 & 12 year old who both join me at every game in the family stand. I used to hate football right up to the age of 45… Now nearly 50 and on my 4th season ticket!! How Charlton has changed my life! UTA

Sad to see the old ground in such a state, they were dark days. What an achievement to get back in 1992!

Makes you wonder about what the standard was for the safety of terraces back then. They closed the huge terrace at the Valley down for safety reasons, yet they allowed the death trap that was the Leppings Lane terrace at Hillsborough to remain open.

I think this is Rick Everitt now Labour Councillor and main man for Voice of the Valley . A lot owed to him for the return , let’s hope we can improve things again 👍

The days when match programmes carried cigarette advertising - how times have changed! I also used to stand near the halfway line on the east terrace, although further up, but lost out on that spot for the last game I ever watched from there (Jan '85 FA Cup replay vs Spurs). Had to stand over near the covered end as the terrace was rammed. The official attendance was about 20,000. I always believed it was more like 30,000.

It's actually Rick Everitt. Mick Everitt worked for Charlton but is a different person.

My bad! I'm a VOTV subscriber and follow Rick on Twitter - so the fact it was the early hours is no excuse🙄 And Mick is a Charlton stalwart in his own right of course.

Decades of under-investment clearly visible... but we arose from the ashes! Hopefully we can again... Thanks for sharing this historic footage.

Woolwich arsenal had to go north London because Charlton were so well supported.

I remember watching my team, Manchester United, play Charlton at Selhurst Park twice in 1989. 1st time was a week after the Hillsborough disaster, 22nd April. 2nd time was in November i think. One of the programmes from 1 of the games had pictures of the Valley, overgrown and derelict, along with the plans to return to the Valley.

Yes I remember going there for the first time with Cardiff around 77 or 78 and just being amazed by that terrace side,,the terrace was to the right if you were in the away end behind the goal which then was a terrace with no roof if I remember and the only seats were the wooden stand

My nan lived on floyd Road and my dad took me in here to look around, must of been around the same year. I remember we went into the changing rooms and when we walked out an iron bar fell.from above and nearly wiped him out. We left straight away after that 😂

Ran on the pitch at the end of the Stoke game, thanks to the policeman that said if I ran faster than him to the next gate I would make it on.

The comment in the video that got me was when he said " what a waste ". Absolutely agree. Although the stand with the directors box in looked like the floor was wooden. That would have needed replacing after the Bradford fire disaster. Wasn't the big East terrace badly in need of repairs as well?? I remember reading somewhere that it was a big factor in Charlton leaving the Valley??

For years the club was starved of investment. All the money they spent bringing Alan Simmonson over could have been put to better use.
Glickstine didn't care and Hullier didn't know what he was doing, just muddled through.
And in the recent past we've come close to going under again with owners that didn't care and managers who, quite honestly could not manage a Sunday league side.
