In the episode you can see that Jake's past life was the animal that accompanied Finn's past life, which means that they were already friends in past lives and continued to reincarnate together, repeating the cycle of their friendship
Honestly, I think the one thing that makes this so bittersweet is for a special surrounding death- they handled characters who's VAs passed away very well. If I'm not mistaken, this was Treetrunk's VA last performance. And Death was silent throughout the scenes he appeared in because his VA passed away a few years back. The fact they didn't go out of their way to replace his VA is probably the biggest sign of respect they could've done for him.
New Deaths story is actually really sad. Most of his awful actions and attitude are because of the Lich manipulating him. He clung to the lich as his best friend because he felt he had no purpose anywhere else, and in truth he does. He’s a living contradiction. Both life and death inside of him he can’t do anything really. Any purpose he has would go against itself. He can’t create or destroy, they equal each other out. He has no reason to exist and it made him angsty and cling to the lich as his friend, who took advantage of him. It’s honestly really depressing.

I like how well this episode dealt with different interpretations of an after life. It had a mix of many different cultures and religions in the dead worlds. The 50th is very much a traditional "heaven" like place, but seems to be tied to Buddhist interpretations. Consider how Jake was pulled out of the 50th by being given gum, a material possession that he loved.
Hey just to let you know, Life is a character we’ve seen before. She was in an AT Short called the Gift That Reaps Giving. In that short, Death tried to date Life, and it seemed to have worked!
I like Mr. Fox's ending because honestly, he was always shown to be living a sad life. I like that Peppermint Butler became the new Candy Kingdom Princess so that Marcy and Bonnie could live as a married couple without any duties to worry about. Life and Death are like Persephone and Hades with Persephone being The Goddess of Spring and Hades The God of the Underworld. I love that Tree Trunks get to be polyamourous in the Underworld. It makes sense that Wyatt was in the worst realm of the The Dead World. I hope Ash is there too
One little detail i love is that the Title Cards show the Mountain in the Intro that Finn and Jake stood on, really solidifying that this is their Story

Chris Fleming did a fantastic job as New Death, and I respect that they didn't even bother recasting Old Death. RIP, Miguel Ferrer. Also, excellent continuity with having Ghost Princess and her BF chilling in 50th Dead World, that episode was ages ago.
I felt bad for Tiffany when Finn kept getting him in trouble because he was actually trying to be cool. I love how he went on about their mutual hatred and respect just to try and bring him back to his apartment to hang out.
What broke me is the fact that since the day Jake died, Finn was hoping to die every single day for the rest of his life just so he could see him again.
This episode flat out made me ugly cry, both sad and happy tears. This is personally my favorite from the distant land special, it encapsulates that humor and emotional scenes altogether with the sense of nostalgia to give the viewers whose been watching the show since the beginning and that just warms my heart, so glad seeing the bros _together again_ :'))) Also, good luck and stay safe for the surgery Blue! :)
I don’t think they reincarnated as shermy and Beth, Shermy and beth lived like a thousand years in the future. So I think they reincarnated as something else
It's also possible that time doesn't matter when it comes to reincarnation. Time in the afterlife doesn't have to flow in a directly proportional way to time on Earth. It's possible a person could be reincarnated into any time period, even to a time before their previous life. It's hard to say though. But even if they did live more lives in between now and then, I would still expect them to be Shermy and Beth at some point.

The entire fact that there is a "new death", and the Lich hand showing up there because Sweet Pea killed them makes it clear that it has to be linear, and so does the fact that they referred to his reincarnations as PAST lives. The dead worlds are directly connected to the normal universe.

Can we just take time to apreciate the Design of the 50th Dead World, its the perfect image of Niravana, its calm, beutiful and big, but its also minimalist with not alot of Structure showing that the Enlightened Ones have completely detatched themselves from the Material World, showing that no matter how empty of a world they are in, they can apreciate it because they dont care of its minimalism, the Backrounds in the Show were amazing but Distant Lands boosted it to new heights
The same world Finn was supposed to go to, right? This means the brothers were originally meant to go to the same dead world, but because Jake died and came back, his destination changed.

And that place looked horrifying. I can see why Finn wouldn't want to go. It's kind of implied that the higher numbers are the "better" dead worlds, but that place didn't seem like a good one.
At the very end when they play the original ending card from CN, I had like a Jimmy Neutron flashback. I remember around the time Adventure Time was first airing I had just realized I wasn’t straight. I spent years thinking I was going to hell. Cartoons like Adventure Time brought fantasy into my life when I sorely needed it. And to have the show basically end on an exploration of death that is not a punishment but a real place with real people made me feel pretty good.

I wanna make another comment but- I love that they brought back the 50th dead world. They mentioned the 50th as far back as season 3 In the episode “Ghost Princess”. That being made even more clear when you see Ghost Princess and Clarence holding hands together in the 50th, that’s a great callback! Life is a means and Death is the end… In the first major episodic appearance of The Lich when Finn hears the mumbling coming from the Amber prison, he is told by Bubblegum that: “He’s casting spells, trying to get in your head and control your bod” in this scene we see The Lich do exactly that and he starts evoking spells to burn away the talisman containing him. What a mathematical reference, it’s good to know the Adventure Time creators haven’t forgotten the core principles behind the shows characters. It’s a shame though that I’m the only one who seems to notice it. I haven’t been able to find any comments on any other videos who have talked about it.

Has everybody forgotten that The Lich’s hand was split across every conceivable reality? Of which it has been confirmed both in show and in source material that’s there are an infinite number of them? When The Lich’s hand was split across the multiverse, it allowed for the possibility for The Lich to exist in Universes and dimensions that he never would have been in. Meaning The Lich hands now exist in realities that have already had their Lich defeated and destroyed and thus can continue their goal since the native inhabitants of those worlds think their Lich is already gone. The Lich’s mission may have failed here, but it will eventually succeed in another dimension or reality. It is has he stated: “ 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐥, 𝐦𝐲 𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲, 𝐢𝐬 𝐈𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞” The Lich King will win…it’s only a matter of time. A really LONG TIME, but still a time nonetheless.

So Finn & Jake are both dead, Finn desperately wanted to see Jake again, the Life serpent lady dated Death in the series, and it’s obvious they got married and had New Death. I like the different levels about the afterlife like how there Buddhism and stuff. It totally suited Jake. The Litch manipulated New Death who is both life & death at the same time; to kill his dad and become New Death. Love The Litch. Heck I love all The Distant Land’s mini series as a whole it’s absolutely wonderful and feels like a passion project.

Life has appeared before, I don´t remember what the short was (It wasn´t a numbered episode from what I remember). It was back when that frog carrying a crown appeared. When left alone in a mountain it placed the crown and turned into Life, Death would then come and meet up with her. She kissed him in the cheekbone and plants grew on him and then they died. It was a small little thing they showed a looooooong time ago, and when I saw "new death" being a snake skeleton with snake arms, it immediately hit me that those 2 where his parents.
I'd like to believe when he says "bone spell" that he wants to give himself bones or something. Given that he's made of candy, he definitely doesn't have any. Bonnie made it clear in Obsidian that she doesn't have a skeleton of her own. However, knowing Peppermint Butler, it's probably not for that.
6:05 Ok I noticed something, I think in season 2, when Finn and Jake went to the dead worlds, Jake made a signal to find each other if they got separate and as you can see here, Finn used the signal in distant lands. Holy cow...

When The Lich’s hand was split across the multiverse, it allowed for the possibility for The Lich to exist in Universes and dimensions that he never would have been in. Meaning The Lich hands now exist in realities that have already had their Lich defeated and destroyed and thus can continue their goal since the native inhabitants of those worlds think their Lich is already gone. The Lich’s mission may have failed here, but it will eventually succeed in another dimension or reality. So Finn & Jake are both dead, Finn desperately wanted to see Jake again, the Life serpent lady dated Death in the series, and it’s obvious they got married and had New Death. I like the different levels about the afterlife like how there Buddhism and stuff. It totally suited Jake. The Litch manipulated New Death who is both life & death at the same time; to kill his dad and become New Death. Love The Litch. Heck I love all The Distant Land’s mini series as a whole it’s absolutely wonderful and feels like a passion project.

Life has appeared before, I don´t remember what the short was (It wasn´t a numbered episode from what I remember). It was back when that frog carrying a crown appeared. When left alone in a mountain it placed the crown and turned into Life, Death would then come and meet up with her. She kissed him in the cheekbone and plants grew on him and then they died. It was a small little thing they showed a looooooong time ago, and when I saw "new death" being a snake skeleton with snake arms, it immediately hit me that those 2 where his parents.
I'd like to believe when he says "bone spell" that he wants to give himself bones or something. Given that he's made of candy, he definitely doesn't have any. Bonnie made it clear in Obsidian that she doesn't have a skeleton of her own. However, knowing Peppermint Butler, it's probably not for that.

Ok I noticed something, I think in season 2, when Finn and Jake went to the dead worlds, Jake made a signal to find each other if they got separate and as you can see here, Finn used the signal in distant lands.
