      Very rarely! However they sometimes have some products surprisingly cheaper than suppliers, especially for small companies. For example an A.O smith water heater is a few hundred dollars less at the box store.

      But 395 to replace a PVC trap. A 10 dollar part or say 20 dollars, even if it takes one hour to fix how do you justify $395? That is like 175 per hour. Even with trip to the store this is an absolute rip off and the guy should be ashamed to charge someone that. Its like an electrician charging 395 to replace a light switch.

    Roger I am a owner operator plumbing service company . I have been in business for over two years now and have yet to go to a big box store . My truck is pretty well stocked with the materials that I would use on a regular service call . But for the renovation jobs that I do and if I over looked some fittings I normally have it on the truck so that I don't have to leave the job . Then I will stop at the supply house in the morning the next day restock what I used of the truck . And your truck must be organized after every call that is all billable time . Showed up clean and leaves clean .

    I run my own plumbing business here in northern VA and will use both supply stores or Home Depot depending what it is that I need. I only use Ferguson as a last resort. I believe their cashiers/customer service reps get some sort of commission. For example, back when I worked for a big box plumbing company, I remember needing a 1" copper elbow. Not a ProPress or anything, just a regular sweat fitting. The guy that rung me up tried to charge me $40+ for just that lmao. Usually, I never really cared about the cost because the company was paying but this time I said something. Instead of giving me a reason why he was charging that much he immediately dropped it down to $20 lol which is still about triple what it costs. Anyway this is just one example of many. I spoke to my old colleagues and they have experienced the same but, like I said they didnt really care because the company was paying the bill. I'm sure they knew that and that's why they would overcharge which led me to believe they get a kickback because otherwise what purpose would that serve? Northern VA, really the whole DMV has a lot of Ferguson branches and I've visited most of them and it's the same story for me personally. So when it was time to start my own business, I found a different supplier who offered me discounted rates, easy to use website, and they've always treated us fairly. I actually like giving them my business because they're WAY more trustworthy and upfront. On the rare occasion I need to go to Ferguson though I make sure to call in and get the price over the phone beforehand so as to not waste my time.

    i like the stores more than online in fact i don't even use the box store a whole lot i mostly use the ace hardwares and true values. i don't order stuff online because i want to make sure i will get the brands i like. for example i will order five Genova la p traps but i will end up with five regular Nibco p traps. the only time i order online is if i am buying vintage Genova fittings on Ebay or i am ordering drain snakes and stuff like that. and i don't buy stuff a the box store that much because i don't like the quality of the parts they sell i agree with the person who said home cheapo. i go to the small hardware stores because the people know things and i can get quality parts.

    I'm a DYI homeowner with a very well stocked Ferguson plumbing store within the same distance as my big box store. It seem like every time I visit the plumbing store there are people ahead of me at counter, taking great amounts of time for one reason or another. After too many long waits there, I am going to my big box store for everything except what they don't stock. I would think every professional plumber would carry common items such as p-traps, valves, washers, hoses and all the other items that are needed for common repairs.

    • @RogerWakefield
      @RogerWakefield  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @ccadama
      @ccadama 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RogerWakefield I used the same licensed plumber to do three jobs I either couldn't do (replace main water line to the street) or could've done (replace main home shut offs with ball valves) and didn't want to chance the water being off for a long time because like many home repairs, I always take at least three trips to a home center for parts. Of the three jobs, the plumbers only need to go to the plumbing supply store once (replace a outdoor silcock with a frost free and the copper line to it was run against the basement joist). So the plumber definitely has a better stocked truck than me and I should expect it.
      I'm a homeowner and depending on what needs fixing plumbing wise, some of what the big box stores carry work (toilet fill valves, stainless flex supply lines, toilet flappers). Others parts like shut off valves for sinks and toilets are not great. I found that Ace Hardware has better grade shutoffs.
      Great channel. Hope you and your family stay safe and well.

    Not a plumber but I try to avoid the big box stores for my business hardware needs. I usually order from a big industrial supply place, like I did this afternoon, and the parts will be here in the morning. It's just not worth my time to chase around all over town to pick up this part here and that part there.
    That said, we used to have an awesome independent hardware store nearby. I used them as my warehouse for infrequently used parts. Many a time, I would fill an order and be missing some nuts or bolts. I would box it up, print a shipping label and then stop by the hardware store on the way to the post office. I would toss in the missing items, finish boxing up the order and drop it off at the post office. Unfortunately that hardware store went down hill after one of the big box chains bought them and then, one by one, closed down all the stores.

BTW the $75 loss is not correct they have lost the company $75 in lost time & $65 profit on the time they wasted when they could be making profit on another job! if they do that 3 times a week that`s 6.5k they lost the company every year.

    started watching your videos recently , i have a plumbing company in miami, fl . good videos but you always are hard when reacting to other videos, in this one going to a store to get a p-trap and then saying materials costs are $60 :) there is something wrong in your math

  • @losferwords100
    @losferwords100 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Damn, $390 to replace a trap? And that's why you don't go to a big company for service work.
    My base rate is $175 just to show up at your house and make it worth my time and then time and material after that. For a simple trap replacement, that'd be just $175 + $4 for the trap. 5 minute job, in and out and I'm $175 richer. $390 is ridiculous. That's like Roto Rooter prices.
    This also highlights why you should keep inventory on your truck at all times to avoid wasting time getting material. Especially common and basic things like traps. I have like 10 on my truck at all times. You're always using them. Stock up and save the trip.

    Two things:
    1) When a plumber shows up on the job for a "garden variety" job without the necessary tools and supplies, many customers will question whether he is a professional.
    2) When you come and do my plumbing, I need to be at home for that. That means, I have to leave the office and potentially make up the lost time that evening of Saturday. If you take an extra hour or two or three because you are running to the Home Depot, that is costing me my time.

    • @jlawrence0181
      @jlawrence0181 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Michael Taylor I do not expect a plumber to have everything on their truck. However, if a plumber is making 2-3 trips to theHome Depot on a job, it is ridiculous. Do remember that I have to come home from work to let you in and wait on you to get done. That is all time that I will need to make up after I run to the plant. if it takes ypu f hours to do a one hour job it means that I lose a night with my family. I have worked with hundreds of plumbers over the years having worked for the largest manufacturer of plumbing tools in the world. I can generally look at the back of the plumber's van and tell if I am working with a professional or a slacker. Real professionals show up clean, on- time and ready to work. They are organized and thorough. Yes, I do have a licensed plumber that I always use and generally send him a gift on the years where he has worked for us. He is a great guy.

    I worked in a big box store plumbing dept. and on countless occasions customers came in to pick up parts for the plumber. They never knew what they were picking up, what it looked like or the proper name of the product. In most cases the plumber didn't carry parts on the truck, go figure. All I can say is you can't make money when you operate like that.

  • @BryanTorok

    Home Depot now offers several delivery options. The normal delivery (free for orders over $45) is 1 to 5 business days. You can get same day or next day delivery, but it is pricey. They also have a service where they will pull the order for you that is free. You then either pick it up at a locker just inside the store entrance or they will deliver it to your car in the parking lot. I've used the locker pick up and it was fast and convenient. They texted/emailed when the order was ready and that was about 1 to 2 hours.
