  • The Royal Australian Navy currently operates 12 Armidale-class patrol boats. This is a project to replace the previous 15 Fremantle-class patrol boats, which were started in 1993 as a joint project with the Royal Malaysian Navy. After Malaysia withdrew, the Royal Australian Navy returned to the project in 1999, as SEA 1444. A total of 14 ships were built, but one of the vessels, Bundaberg , was destroyed in a major fire in 2014. And most recently, the Pirie, was retired on March 26, 2021.

Was the first thing that jumped in my mind too. HMAS Hammersley on patrol. It isn't the real name of the boat used.

slower than i expected i had them at 30 to 35 knots top end! light armaments too for that size i;d expect a Bofor's Mk 110 and some sort of surface to air missile system!

@James Cunliffe yeah i don't ask much just stand in line play by the rules and wait your damn turn!! just don't try to stroll in and take over!!

They aren't made for combat their job is border force and stopping drug trades and illegal migrants

@@batmanialore8260 better to have and not need than to need and not have! sometimes just the sight of a good sized gun will prevent it from needing to be used!! and meant to or not they can end up in a combat situation real easy with some drug runners or pirates (which will probably show up again eventually!!) and especially with the way the chinese navy is starting to act!! drug runners, they're getting more and more firepower (i know someone who has seen reports saying latin american drug runners have gotten ahold of autocannons some up to 30mm and anti tank stuff already, and who knows what else!!) and are not afraid to try and ram in some cases! in both cases you want stopping power!

@@keithmoore5306 the armidale class also doesn't have the room and are being decommissioned and being replaced by new off shore patrol vessels which can be modified if have to, I've seen the armidales in person the lack the room for any other equipment and they were designed to stay in coastal waters and not in deep ocean like they are doing. I'm not saying your wrong I'm just saying facts that their role and size will stop them from having all those and if they did it would effect the speed and turning radius

that's just reported speed, the show sea patrol has stat 27 knots, I suspect its gets up to about 30-35 knots if it needs to

“Glorified Customs Boat” and the replacements are not equipped for a Corvette sized Ship, R.A.N are preparing for the rescuing refugees and sunk frigates.

Nice patrol boat but the future is going to be the Chinese submarines next to the current tasks. The submarines they use now can be detected from the territorial waters of Australia when the Chinese submarines leave their home ports. But if Russia transfers the technology they got from the Swedish and Germans they will be harder to detect.

i don't know about that Wally even with Russian tech their planes still ain't worth much more than target drones!! can;t imagine they'd do better with marine tech! but this one surprised me being as light as she's armed for her size i'd expected a 57mm and some sort of sam system, an avenger pod a British javelin or the likes of those! definitely looks like she's got the room for them! a little slower than i was thinking, looking at her 30 to 35 knots top end was my guess!

@@keithmoore5306 the only thing that they produce that is actually worth the money is their newer submarine models. If they transfer the tooling technology we could have to make an effort to detect the Chinese submarines. In the worst case we can use fishing vessels the PLAN idiots drive their subs straight into the netting at least once a year 🤣🤣🤣

Two of this class have been decommissioned after only 15 years afloat. This isn't as quick as the U.S. Littoral Class ships. The Aussie ships also made by Astral Defense. Wow, this does not speak well for their design and building work.

They’ve seen some serious work especially on border patrol. They are workhorses of the RAN and deserve a rest.
