    My two cents about why I bought a KTM 500 and I'm in my mid 20's. I bought a 2017 KTM 500 new when they redesigned them and I previously owned a 2011 CRF450r. I grew up riding trails and barely rode track and realized I didn't need that 450r. I ended up making the decision to sell my Honda to buy the 500 because my Dad and I were doing longer trail rides and I was riding his KTM 450 excf that was street legal. I wanted a bike that could do everything and I can ride it anytime, anywhere. Since I bought my 500, it is odd showing up to a ride and everyone that has a dual sport is twice my age, but the long rides and places I have been able to ride to far outweigh a race bike for me. There is a massive return on investment with these bikes and if you ever resell one and took good care of it, you will get good money for it. Going plated is the way to go! Put a vortex ecu in it and dial in your suspension and you're ready to go.

    Great information. I had to look up some words "Bitumen" and "pillion", not common terminology in the US. I feel lucky to hear your experience.

    I’m currently a 2 bike guy. KTM 300 XCW for single track and 690 for dual sport ventures.
    I bought the 690 because some of us we’re planning to run the TAT here in American. I found one with only 1700 miles and jumped on it.
    Now, after owning it for about 6 years I’m really looking at the 500. The weight and capability of the 500 are the main reasons. I’m 66, still ride single track when possible and enjoy the back roads and gravel roads.

    Thanks for sharing a great story/journey.
    I ended up with 4 bikes in the garage and recently a trailer. Would like to simplify my lifr a bit, seems like a 500/690/701 is the question

    Keith , I just found your Channel today ! I’m in the Same situation as you , I think. I’m 61 , been riding since I was 14. Many dirtbikes in the early days , many road bikes too , Been riding Harley’s for 23 years now, with a Street Glide Spec. In the garage for road work, trips . Now , just last week I got a 2021 KTM 690 r. Been wanting to go off road since my last dirt bike 13 years ago . I really had a Hard time deciding between the 690 & the 500 .

    Great story. I went down a similar path and ended with a KTM 500. I love the bike but often feel that my next bike may be the KTM 690. Really torn but hopefully a few more years to decide. I will be sure to check out that video you mentioned.

    Great vid mate, enjoying your channel - I bought a DRZ400 getting back into riding a couple of years ago.... was great at enduro, then we added tanks and taller sprockets (heavy and tall), so just bought a Xtrainer 300 for tight stuff (love it), keeping DRZ for flowy stuff. Just rode a mate's 530 EXC - really enjoyed it's handling. So now I'm aiming to add one of those (used 2018 or thereabouts) to the stable at the end of this year. Also have V-strom 650 for road. So many bike choices out there for different situations! Haha

    Hey Keith, thanks for the great vids you’ve made. Not sure if you cover this anywhere but with the high miles you rack up have you considered a cush drive rear wheel? Do

    Similar journey, assorted road bikes, dirt bikes over the years. Had a Tiger 800 XC too (fantastic bike, bit heavy in the bush but so much fun and magic engine!) DRZ (not so good on road for longer trips). Now very happy with my DR650, does road and bush good enough for me and is bulletproof and so easy to work on. May upgrade to something newer one day, if my body holds up long enough...

    Hello Keiht, your video is very interesting, I just sold my 1290aventure r 2018 and I am thinking about whether to buy a ktm500 2022, I already had a 690 2017 and I liked it a lot but it was also heavy for the field.
    I am being guided by your great experience, thank you for sharing your wisdom friend.

    My new 690 supermoto was best choise for me after 10 years of sport bikes. It eats tarmac and can do occasional gravel roads. Maybe in the future I will get the 500 if I'm starting to love the gravel roads more and wan't to get into single tracks🙂

    Good on you. Great Vid. I have a 2022 CRF 300 L Rally and WHAT a dissapointment it is. Twist the throttle and NOTHING happens. Moving it on quickly whilst it's brand new and going for a 2016 EXC F 500 with 1000Ks on it. That one of yours looks really well set up mate. Congrats. Cheers Cam

      Dude I feel you I got a 2017 250l w 1k miles on it less than a couple months ago.. modded it out to get every drop of what it’s got and I jus can’t do it. It’s fun at slow speeds and all, but the pig is extremely hard to get the front wheel up and just no top end. I’m already getting rid of it and looking heavily into the 500excf.. the price and maintenance was asking a lot but after constantly tinkering on the 250l, I think I’d be happy to check valves and change oil for the benefits

    Hey Keith, I'm hoping you reply to comments on your older videos - this seemed like the most appropriate place to ask. What's your opinion of the Beta RR 390 as the basis for a lightweight ADV bike? I'm riding a DRZ400 and love it; I can pick it up unless fully loaded for a multi-day, the right amount of torque and giddy-up, simple, I don't have to worry about throwing it down the road, into a tree, etc, and long service intervals. However; no 6th gear, no EFI, pretty loud for the city neighbours. I rode a mate's KTM 500 EXC (before it was stolen) and decided I probably wasn't mature enough to ride it; even in tame mode it has too much potential for me to do stupid things, and I'm old enough now to need to avoid breaking myself. I saw some nice reviews on the longer stroke 390 - all very glowing. I'll need to have a ride on one somehow, but do you think it could take on the Simpson fully loaded like your 500 did ?

    after 20+ years on road bikes, i got sick of good roads having their speed limits reduced and reduced again... got tired of the anti-speed nazi, got tired of sitting in traffic jams going nowhere, so I bought the DR and went offroad instead. Best move i made.

    Well done, I'm trying to decide also, which way to go. Lighter and more nimble, or bigger and more powerful. The 500 seems like the best choice for me coming from a dirt bike background. If I feel the need for something more comfortable and powerful then I'll just get a nice street bike, triumph speed triple most likely.

      If you can afford two bikes in the garage, do it.... best of both worlds!

  • @SmalltimR
    @SmalltimR 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    My story's a bit different - I was so close to getting a KTM 500, but just couldn't get over the service intervals.
    Likewise, the weight proved to be an issue, which may seem odd, though my area of the world is renown for heavy winds, and where a sub 320lb bike just wouldn't cut-it in terms of stability. And so I got a DR650
    With that said, and after riding the DR, I really don't know why someone would want more power, as the bike feels like it will rip my arms out of their sockets up-to 4th gear. Though I'm thinking my particular bike maybe tuned differently?

    Hi Keith,
    I have been thinking about a KTM500 for a while now but having it mapped for a smooth ride. Currently ride a DRZ400e and just concerned about the hectic power of the KTM. It seems a lot of people buy a 500 and it scares the crap out of them, so they sell after a few rides. I feel like a softie saying this but I'm not keen on having a big crash (2 young daughters)

    How do you work around the oil change & valve check intervals.. or do you find they can be stretched right out for the adventuring.. cheers from NZ.. 3 of us setting at 3-4 months round Aus with bmw 650xmoto's fuel econ, light, have the power & dry sumped oil tank.. riden but not bought the bikes yet.. your covid rules are crazy

    • @keithjob
      @keithjob  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oil change for me is usually around 1500km, 25hrs, ish. ADV is a lot different to racing, so I'm not bothered pushing it out. Even 2000, 2500 if I was touring on it, no drama. Valve checks... you are almost wasting your time checking them. They hardly move. I just checked mine after 200 hrs, and they had not moved at all since the 100 hr check.
