  • This video demonstrates the process for sand casting an aluminum Def Leppard sign. The pattern was 3D printed on an FDM printer and prepped with primer and spraypaint. The sand used is 190mesh petrobond. The aluminum is scrap from car parts and previous castings.

I didn't understand about the sand cracking. Even at the end where you showed it. 🧐🤔
Great pour! Minor defects that only you would notice. 👍

Yeah I think I might have already pounded a little on the sand before it cracked already making an imprint of the pattern. When the crack happened you can see it shifted the sand in different directions like 1/16- 1/8 of an inch. Then when I started to pound the sand again it didn't get rid of the original impression in some areas. Another area that this is visible is at 2:22, there are gaps around the triangle that should have not been there indicating the pattern or the sand was shifted at one point. Looking at my video I do believe I failed going into why I thought this. Thank you for brining this up and watching my video.

Great video. We learn so much more when things don’t come out perfect every time.

I think casting the part was an acceptable method. But considering the little metal this required, and the overhead, I would have done another mold. Either the same part or a different part.
The one thing I didn't see in the video was if you used a brush on the part after you applied the talcum powder. I think using a soft artists brush does a better job of adhering the talc to the part.

In the preparation of the pattern I did use a makeup brush but probably failed to do a thorough job with getting the talc in the holes. I focused more on showing the metal in the furnace this time, and less on the mold packing. This most likely caused me to over look some details in the sand packing process. I was trying something different to see what viewers look for in these types of videos on my stats page. I agree it doesn’t take much material and I might have better luck trying to cast the pattern again, but I think I might also demonstrate another way of creating a metal sign by adhering a stencil to a polished piece of aluminum and etching it. Thanks again for view my videos and leaving a comment, much appreciated.

These pours are coming out great. Mine always have a pretty rough texture. What kind of thermocouple do you use to measure the temp?

The Fallout 76 emblem video shows a little bit about the thermocouple setup I use. The hand held thermocouple reader I picked up from Amazon there are a few like mine. The thermocouple was also purchased on Amazon but I can't find the exact one I purchased anymore.
