Look at all the money they spent and taxes they paid. :) Also they let other hams as well as weather folks know about the propagation in the atmosphere which is important for cellular, military, and more. But mainly they just have fun.

in case of disasters (war, massive landslides, telephone communications have fallen, etc.) it is the only way of communication
