  • A South Carolina mother was outraged after her 10-year-old son was told to pick cotton and sing a “slave song” while on an elementary school field trip -- but the school reportedly defended the activity, saying it was about the "Great Depression."

    This has potential to be one of the best lessons. Because raw cotton is very uncomfortable to touch. And it’s hard work. So telling the class to do that, then after about 10 minutes, telling them “imagine doing that everyday” would put things into perspective. That’s just how I see it.

    • @securitybureauagent3714
      @securitybureauagent3714 2 ปีที่แล้ว +69

      that could be a potentially good idea to teach kids about the horrors of slavery, but it's still in pretty poor taste and i don't imagine that was the intended purpose of the field trip by that school

    I think this coud have been a good idea for a field trip if they explained it better and treated it with more respect. I think making it a game is inappropriate but I see nothing wrong of putting students in the shoes of slaves even for half an hour. I think instead of sheltering our kids from the past we should introduce them to hard topics in a smart way. Maybe this was not the best approach but I see what the school was trying to do.

      We actually did something like this in middle school. It was essentially a role play where we, as a group, were put in the shoes of a group of slaves from being auctioned off to going through the Underground Railroad. It was conducted by a historical society in the area, I think, and the route went through a wooded area meant to replicate the era in terms of architecture- historical cabins, wells, old farms… things like that. It was pretty intense, but it always stuck with me, and those involved definitely did their homework. I’m pretty sure the camp still does this, too.
      Edit: Decided to do a google to make sure I wasn’t viewing the past through rose-colored glasses- Yes, this camp still does it, and it remains virtually unchanged from the time I went through, including characters played by counselors that represent different perspectives on slavery from the time period, like a Quaker, an abolitionist, a John brown follower, fellow slaves, etc. It was a really cool experience, and I think kids should be given more hands on education opportunities like this where context is explained in an engaging way, rather than making a game out of it like this video.

    • @denistardif6650
      @denistardif6650 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      well these are like 8 year old kids even if you explain it to them they are innocent and even see it has a game i see no wrong with learning about agriculture etc. now i understand why African American people get mad because the kids saw cotton picking has fun this is why instead of learning about it ate such a young age they should learn it later in middle school so they understand what it meant ate the very least. but in my opinion black people are very lucky in a way there history is taught in all schools in the USA has for Cajun and other cultures are swept beneath the rug.

    Honestly, when I was in second grade- We had a special guest come in, and she brought every one of us Cotton for us to pick the seeds out or something, and it hurt. It was prickly at times, and she would say "Now imagine having to do that every day. That is what the slaves had to do back in the 1700's to the 1800's even longer than that." and that put a whole perspective on everything for me. It made me understand a little better at African American suffering. Not from a full frontal empathically advanced standpoint, but enough to really kind of see how messed up stuff were for them from a physical experience, and that was only the tip of the ice berg. I don't see anything wrong with the field trip- They really should have stated more about the history revolving around African American history, but maybe they did explain it, and some of the kids just didn't listen. There are so many variables that went into this, and I know I am late to the party as this video was made in 2019, but irregardless I don't see the harm in this, and it seems as if everyone is too offended about every little thing- Be offended where offense is intended, not when it has pure intent for the student's future understanding in mind.

    This is what we in Europe call shock history tutorials. To teach the wrongs of history it's often important to experience what others experienced. In Europe there's a museum that will allow someone to sit in a death cage for five minutes to see just how unbearably cramped it is. In my opinion this was to teach children how slaves felt back then, when you experience their experiences, it becomes personal and emotional to you so you comprehend the wrongs more than you did.

    The fact that the kids are laughing is because they still awake and history is history not their reality. The fact that they went to the fields just give them opportunity to see how important is to work as a community and as one. Some people are just on focus on teaching hate and aggressive thoughts. Stop teaching kids about rights without responsibility. If they learn what being responsible and good to themselves and the ones around them the right of claiming their rights will not be taken by anyone. STOP Racism by not creating hate among people. History don't define you, your actions do.

    The thing is: whites and blacks alike picked cotton, during and after slavery. It was trade like any other. I know there is a heavy connotation but this is an opportunity to learn about something here. The mother is overblowing this up.
