    There’s something so comforting about those low resolution worlds. Makes you feel as though you could be called in for dinner or asked if your homework was done yet, those long nights spent watching the tv as night falls

      A couple times a year I only play PS1/N64 games and only allow myself to watch 90s TV shows and movies, sometimes for a week, sometimes a whole month, and I never get bored.
      After a long day at work, coming home to a pizza, watching something chilled out like Arthur and then Married with Children later, and then having a couple drinks and playing Final Fantasy VII, is a great way to spend an evening.

      @@JAMESYQ24 90s night brother hell yeah. I've been playing a lot of 90s games myself. That and two modern games that are based on late 90s style fps titles. I can't stand how soft on you most new games are. That and how we're forced to accept buggy messes that punishes people for getting excited and buying a new game. If you have to wait six months for a game to get patched up correctly, I refuse to pay full price on release. Anyway i won't rave more here. Glad you appreciate 90s games too

    13:37 I am pretty sure they wanted to replicate the Lombard Street in SF but because it's the PS1 they couldn't do much better than a very VERY simplified version of it.

    BTW - new here from the GTA 3 vid and love the style of your videos.
    It's quite unique. Other people tend to just do the research and present the findings. But you really bring the viewer along on the discovery process in an engaging way. Even seeing the places you checked but found nothing is fun and relatable. The context is as worthwhile as the discoveries.
    Just wanted to share some positive feedback and say thanks for getting me through work today with these cozy vids.

    Funny enough, the rooftop tunnel in Minneapolis was made into a dilapidated corridor that transitions into a lobby with elevators before the skybridge, while the "Sucky Room" was turned into a storage room full of toilet paper. Sweet analysis of all these minute spots and how it makes the levels more lifelike.

    OOH fun fact about the Burnside map
    There totally is a secret area™ albeit a small one
    If you aim carefully and time your jump perfectly you can get onto the girders under the overpass
    It's a small thing
    But it is nice that even in such a compact level they still found a way to sort of have secret area
    Kind of like the girders in Skate Park
    Brilliant video as well, I really appreciate the work and consideration you put in
    Thank you for sharing your insights with us

    Probably more than ten, even fifteen years ago at this point, I had the idea for a blog/tumblr/something (I didn't use them) called Places in Games that would just weekly/daily feature a "spot", and these videos actually execute that idea. The place I was going to use for my first post was one of the cabins from the first level of the single player campaign for the FPS Command and Conquer: Renegade. Something about those little rooms. I'll have to replay it soon because I'm recalling them from memory, when they might not even exist. (I also loved the cabins in the snowfield level of Goldeneye. Something so comfy about a cabin.)
    Anyway, thanks for this - the memory and the videos.

    • @youmukonpaku3168
      @youmukonpaku3168 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      as someone who has played WAY too much Renegade, they do exist, but none of them have more than one room. Usually a cozy one, with a nice fireplace and some couches, provided you've already solved all the fanatics shooting at you. You're probably conflating the memories with the couple of townhouses you can enter in mission 5/7, which have two or three rooms apiece.

    18:21 I know most people played this game on PlayStation, but the distant objects become more clear and detailed if the Dreamcast version is played. That's due to the system not only being one of the more powerful machines of its time, but THPS1 and 2 (the standalone 2000 releases) run at a higher resolution on the Dreamcast.

    Great video! Got recommended this video, and it was perfect. Love the chill vibes, and the little atmospheric breaks you take. I think you should do more of those and make them longer too! Maybe some standalone ambient vibe videos on a second channel!
    As you pointed out, Burnside is a real skatepark. But San Fransisco Streets also has a lot of famous real life skate spots such as EMB and Hubba Hideout. They lean more heavily into the real spot references in THPS2.
    School II has Leap of Faith, Gonz Rail, and Carlsbad Gap. Marseille is based on real park. NYC has Brooklyn Banks. Venice Beach "Pit" was a real skate location. Skatestreet was a real park. Philly is Love Park and FDR skatepark. Bull Ring is based on the bull ring Tony Hawk rented out for his skate video part in "The End". Chopper Drop inspired by Danny Way dropping into a halfpipe from a helicopter years prior. Even Skater Heaven has a ton of real life locations in it!
    Definitely check the Tony Hawk Fandom Wiki for some of those spots in future videos!
    Keep up the great work.

    Hey man, stopping by to let you know that I really appreciate your style. Your narration is soothing and nice, it could work for younger audiences without sounding too silly for older audiences like myself (or downright psycho as most of the content creators for younger audiences). Your editing, choices and your vision are pretty nice and subversive - especially when talking about something so "mundane" like chill spots on thps levels. Keep it up. New sub.

    Those 'dead spaces' or useless architecture are there to showcase the reality of being a skater.
    When actually skating, it's not a constant barrage of spots to crush, there are areas near and/or en route to that you/friends just chill outta sight while prepping to get to or enjoy the spot.
    They have been described as mundane but they are integral and many a good time has been had in these areas alongside the skating.

    This series is how I learned that I most definitely played a pirated version of these games as a kid, because I had never once seen those FMVs playing in any stage and thought you were doing an editing gag at first. Were they not in the remakes? I don't remember any videos in the remakes playing on anything...
    If you don't know, in ye olde PS1-era pirating days, warez groups would strip out anything that bloated game file size, usually FMVs and sometimes music, as it made the download a lot smaller, and on some systems, like the Dreamcast, was required since GD-ROMs could fit more data than a standard CD-ROM. I was aware that a bunch of games my dad got for me on the Dreamcast were pirated, but I could swear we had a retail copy of THPS on PS1... as I distinctly recall watching all the bail videos. Either way, it's so weird when you've played a game for so long and then you boot it up in the future and there's like... an FMV intro you've never seen before! It somehow feels fake, even though you're actually familiar with the bootleg.

    Interesting that you build score by doing flips and grabs, I build my score with grind tricks, grinding around a pool, switching the grind style constantly to build the multiplier into the sky until I no longer feel confident in my balance and end up cashing in the score, This often nets me a large amount, if I can't find a spot for that, I will instead go for lip tricks, following the same format.

    What's the deal with your aspect ratio? 1300 x 1080 is narrower than 4:3

    • @PretzelYT
      @PretzelYT  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I went with the suggested aspect ratio in the emulator and it came out something not quite 4:3, so I made that the resolution. According to some spreadsheet I found online, the sequel on PS1 runs at 512x240, not 512x384 (which would be 4:3).
      I'm still working out what to do with aspect ratios. I forgot that even games on the same console will use different resolutions. I don't feel like having them ALL be 4:3 or 16:9, because that leaves games obviously out of that range (like with the Pokemon Red video) in a weird spot. I dunno, still figuring it out.

    • @TheNewFlesh
      @TheNewFlesh ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PretzelYT Fair enough, thanks for the response. Gameboy definitely has its own aspect ratio, but for consoles I'd be inclined to brute force old games to 4:3 since the TVs they were displayed on skewed the various resolutions onto the same screen. Kirby on NES has a little "how to draw Kirby" cutscene at the beginning. On a TV, Kirby looks circular, but on a pixel-perfect emulator he's oblong since the devs compensated for how it was expected to actually be seen. Honestly, it's all chaos. Use your best judgement and keep it up 👍

    • @PretzelYT
      @PretzelYT  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I've heard of that example before somewhere, but I can't remember where. It's a good point. I guess at the end of the day, the PS1 wouldn't render this game at its slightly narrower internal resolution, it'd stretch to 4:3. Going forward, I probably will stick to strictly 4:3, since that what most TVs were back in the day, and maybe use different ratios for handheld consoles.
      Thanks for that.

Like this can't be a place that could exist and still if it did it would be so fever dream like to just stand there

    it's a cool video but I just don't find these levels to be as welldesigned as anything GTA related, feels like they were more likely made by disgruntal level designers who were just trying to meet a deadline

    I dislike when people use face warping clickbait thumbnails, so I asked for your channel to not be recommended to me.

      It's extremely tedious to watch/listen to even though the video presents itself as snappy and high quality. It's been a problem on youtube for a long time now where everyone is doing this kind of stuff.

    Great Work !! As someone who's spending a lot of time in video editing, I can tell you put a lot of time and effort into it !!
    Also, it would be amazing to see the same concept for THPS 3 & 4 and Underground !! 🛹🔥
