    Treating Mealybugs on Cactus in Winter

  • @Cactimania

    Ahhh the dreaded mealybug once again 😡 Super annoying pests. It’ll probably be another bad spring/summer for pests with yet another mild winter again so far. I agree with mealies appearing out of nowhere, like they somehow sneak in from another dimension 😂 Hope you manage to get rid of them all, Lyn. Thank you for sharing with us as always. Have a wonderful evening and weekend from Edith & myself to you and Hans ❤️☀️🌵🌼🌺🌸🏜

      haha Daz :-D yes I am convinced that these Beasties really do come out from another dimension haha, I checked over this whole plant with a toothcomb and strong magnifying glass when I brought it in for Winter, and check over it every week, and these Mealybugs were so big and must have bred like Rabbits to get so invasive on this big Brasiliopuntia so fast haha, the Winter has been crazy mild so far and we have noticed a few more Mealybug Beasties appearing in the polytunnel now too, I dont want to be wetting them all with Neem oil in January, it really is a never ending battle with these little Horrors, thanks so much Daz for your wonderful friendship and amazing comment and support and for watching, and Hans and I are sending you and beautiful Edith lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to England and Singapore for a super Saturday and a wonderful weekend XXXX

    Thanks for this,a year or so ago I had a seneco hawthorni delvered that arrived half dead & absolutely covered with them, that plant died but I think it was already too far gone to save when I got it., never had an issue with mealys before that but been fighting ever since to get rid of them. Got an old toothbrush, plant shampoo and cleaning alcohol in water and submerged/soaked and scrubed all the survivors with any signs the other day out of desperation-maybe I shouldn't have done that... :😟 . Will use the brush idea for the more vicious cacti and the ones with hard to reach places because of shape, and maybe wont panic so much whenever I see a mealy. The ones I think I'd struggle most to see/treat the mealys on if infected are the cacti with white wool like covering because the "wool" hides and acts like a barrier getting to the main body. Luckily the infestation is mild now and has been for awhile, just persistant. Have a great Weekend!🙂🌵🌵

      So sorry to hear about your Senecio hawthorni, these Mealy bugs really are such a pain for us plant growers and can be so persistent to get rid of, yes the woolly cacti can be so hard to treat from Mealies as their white hair hides the woolly mealy bugs and their woolly nests, and its so hard to reach the mealies with the wool on the cacti, I have had to soak some of my woolly cacti in the past with the alcohol by dipping them upside down into a tub of rubbing alcohol and holding the cactus in there for about a minute, thankfully the cacti survive this treatment and it does seem to kill off most of the mealies and keep them under control, it really is a never ending battle of the bugs for us plant growers, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend XXXX

    Hi Lyn! These mealybugs are really yuk...how do they come on plants when they are inside? I always wondered!!! In 33 years living in my house I have never had mealybugs before this summer, and although I cut out parts infested with them they still managed to kill my beautiful big fuschia! I really hate them! I hope you manage to distroy them all from that enormous cactus. That's a beauty! Thanks for showing us you tips and knowledge! Have an amazing evening Lyn and Hans and hope you have a wonderful weekend! Lots of love to you both!

    Yes, itseems these little beasties just come out of nowhere!! Scale & spider mites seems to be my biggest problem right now .because of scale weakening my ariocarpus so
    bad, I finally lost the last fissuratus. It just didn't have enough good to live anymore. My seedlings were wiped out from the rust attack I had last spring. But I do have 4 seedlings left!! So not all of my fissuratus are done. Just the adults. These guys are just so hard to see the scale in-between the tubrecals. I have had some success in putting high risk plants in a hanging basket where I can set the pots and have no contacts with other plants. I've saved a few high risk plants this way. Good luck in the battle!!! We are getting snow today!! From Morris Park in the Ozarks, to across the emerald isle, have a wonderful day!!! Peace, Love, Plants!!!✌💖🌵🏵🌴🌺🪴🌹🌲🌷🌳💐😃👍

      Oh no Clyde, so sorry to hear that you lost your last Ario fissuratus, we lost some of our Ariocarpus seedlings from the rust too, but the others are growing well and we have two of the Loph texensis seedlings from the seeds you gave us that are growing well, but all our other Loph seedlings got the dreaded rust and was gutted, thats fantastic you have four fissuratus seedlings from your Mother plant, but its still sad to lose the mature Ario's to the dreaded Scale, its such a horrible pest and our Opuntia's are always coming down with Scale too and even the Neem doesn't seem to eliminate the Scale completely, arghh these Beasties really are a pain for us, thats a fantastic idea with putting the higher risk plants up in hanging baskets, its a bit like 'Social distancing' for plants haha, thanks so much Clyde for your wonderful friendship and amazing comment and support and for watching, and Hans and I are sending you and beautiful Deb and all the pets and plants all lots of love and happiness and PEACE, LOVE, PLANTS and PLANT POWER to Morris Park in the Ozarks for a warm snowy Sunday XXXX

    Hello Lyn I've been a big fan of yours for the last four years and have fallen in love with cacti and your videos have been the biggest help from general knowledge about growing them, to starting from seeds and cuttings and even cross pollinating to get hybrids. Your biggest help has been what to do about pests but I have an unusual issue with my cacti atm. It's mealybugs but not the usual kind, these live in the soil and no matter what I've tried so far hasn't seemed to truly eradicate them. Please any advice would be very much appreciated. If you'd like to know what I have done currently is use a homemade mix of hydrogen peroxide, alcohol and dish soap diluted in water. I don't want to resort to any harsh chemicals and it's still too early in the year even for me to repot all of my plants

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So happy you love my videos and have found them helpful and so happy you love cacti too, Root Mealy bugs can be such a pain for us cactus growers, and its always difficult to know what to do in the Winter when our cacti are dormant, in the Spring and Summer I water the cacti with horticultural Neem oil every month to get rid of and prevent root mealies, but in the Winter if I notice any signs of root mealies I remove the cactus from the pot and lay it on its side and then thoroughly remove every trace of soil as possible, I then spray the roots with Neem oil mixed with horticultural soap, I will then keep the cactus unpotted all through the winter and keep re spraying the roots every week to eliminate all traces of root mealy bugs, I make sure that the cactus is kept inside the house at room temperature, and because I keep the cactus unpotted the roots will dry out fast within an hour or two after being sprayed, this prevents any chances or root rot during the Winter dormancy, in very severe cases I have had to prune off the roots and then re root the cactus again in the Spring, Good luck with your cactus, root mealies are such a pain, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Wednesday XXXX

    Great video for treating any cactus pest. Those don't look like mealies though. They look like Cochineal which only seem to affect Opuntias. For centuries Mexicans have raised and harvested Cochineal to dry, smash, and filter out a very potent dye. The dye has been used to dye clothing and foods for centuries. Even the RED from the RED COATS, and red garments from the church came from Cochineal. It my sound gross to add to food, but it is way more safe than using petroleum derived Red dye. 🤢🤮 But it has grossed people out, and many vegan activist find it wrong....so many have stopped using red dye derived from Cochineal. I went off on a tangent, but anyways....Great videos as always! 🙃🌵

    Question, my E Numburg is not presenting for mealy bugs that I can tell but instead has a rash; very very tiny little bumps that do not change color, still purple. When I spray with alcohol, the bumps go away. I have not been able to find any videos on what this is. What is your opinion? Are they warts? Thanks for this tutorial, it inspired me to look at my Echeverias and lo and behold! Problems (the bumps came back). Ta Ta For Now.

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I have noticed this too on some of my Echeveria's and the odd thing is I have not been able to work out what causes it, the only thing I can think of is a change in environment or humidity level seems to do this to some of mine, but I have not be able to definitely say its due to this, I notice it more on my coloured Echeverias like the purple and pink leaves ones, the good news is that it definitely isn't life threating to the plants, a lot of mine have had this for years on and off, I think they could be little warts that are harmless and may be due to the cells in the leaves responding to changes in temps and sunlight levels and watering levels making the cells break under the skin, its a bit of a mystery haha, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a super Sunday XXXX

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Janet :-D thats fantastic you spray with the Isopropyl alcohol, yes its I sometimes put the alcohol into a spray bottle and spray down the whole plant, but I sometimes find if the mealybug nests are quite bad the pressure of spray will bounce the nests off and can spread them onto nearby plants, but the spraying is very effective especially with the cactus plants that have very tight spines or the very woolly hairy ones, thanks so much Janet for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a super Sunday XXXX

      These bugs really are horrible little 'Beasties' yes its best to keep the cacti dry even when indoors in winter because watering cacti in the short winter days will encourage the cactus to keep growing and will grow stretched out and skinny at the top, if the cacti shrivel badly I will give a small amount of water just enough to prevent them from shrivelling but not enough for them to want to carry on growing, thanks so much Vixi for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Thursday XXXX
