square is actually fine for entering with wing chun, and he doesn't need to have his hand up to protect himself. He actually needs to learn to close, off balance and blitz, instead he is pot-shotting which is what gives rise to the need for boxing basics. Wing chun should force hooks that it prevents with arm control. Real wing chun looks like a dirty boxing and clinch fighting. The reason these wing chun guys don't develop this is its mostly a lost art and also they dont train like fighters

This fight took place in 2010 and caused quite a stir back then. The boxer, Yu Tieliang, is a boxing champ and has represented HK in the Olympics. If memory serves, the WC guy claimed his scientific approach to WC was superior to boxing, and that he'd show the boxer "how to fight the right way." The boxer accepted his challenge, and the rest........is history.

The duration of training, the experience, the caliber of the coach and the caliber of the teacher makes a big difference. You can put the boxer up to Yip man or Sigong Bruce and the abilities, experience and the duration of practice will reveal a lot and we know it wouldn't be fair to the boxer.... Ive been to gyms where the owners didn't like sparring because of injuries but its better to get hurt around friends then on the street being attacked.

When the woman began this art/style she wanted to prevent being attacked by bandits and bullies. Master Man demonstrated that range can be adjusted by using feet and legs! Master Lee realized that the jab is the fastest blow in the arts so he studied the footwork of Ali and adapted boxing into his Jeet ! Improvise, adapt, overcome begins with KNOWING YOUR OPPONENT'S style and skill!! Not claiming proficiency when ain't proficient!

  • @Simon2k17
    @Simon2k17 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +29

Wing chun's ideal range is close range. The problem is that a majority of Wing Chun barely teach footwork. Even if footwork is taught, it's terrible footwork (this includes William cheungs footwork). They'll see an opportunity, but can't get to it fast enough. Bruce Lee implemented fencing and boxing footwork in JKD. You need to bridge the gap and change angles as fast as possible if your opponent is super skilled and has lots of room to move.

TBF this guy's footwork looked fine , he was just terrible at getting inside. Every time he would get close it seemed like he was trying to clinch. He remained standing straight up and square for every attempt and didn't manage to land punches.
He had no strategy of overcoming the boxers offense and landing his own.
Strategy could have involved conventional boxing slipping and low jabs. Bending leg, bobbing and weaving or moving to the outside of the boxers lead arm and jabbing from an angle that the boxer could not hit him back.

He actually succeeded in entering a few times but made nothing of it other than pushing his opponent, which is usually bad for Wing Chun (And also getting punched in the face haha) because he is supposed to fight in the pocket, why would he shove his opponent oit of distance, then? The main issue with most Wing Chun practitioners is that they focus too much on the style itself. It's not about the style; it's all about you. If you want to use Wing Chun against boxers, you are responsible for making it work, not the Wing Chun style. Train with boxers, adapt & adopt tactics, rules, and principles that are effective against them. Don't rely on strategies that only work against other Wing Chun practitioners. Wing Chun is just a name we use; it's not a fixed entity. Create your own Wing Chun style, and if you're good against boxers, some of them probably already know it :)
If you love to stay traditional, that’s fine. But please, remember, this style was created in the 17th century as a response to the common martial arts practiced in certain regions of China. Modern boxing was developed much later and obviously is not one of those martial arts. So don’t be naive - do not expect to beat a boxer by sticking strictly to this path. Just accept that you do this for the spirit, not for real fights.

Once you put gloves on, it doesnt matter what discipline you trained in. It'll always turn into a western boxing match, and therefore favor the boxer. Once you pull the gloves off, boxing, mma, it doesnt matter, its a completely different story. Boxing is a specifically a sport. What happens when you pit a boxer against jiujitsu, or judo?...the boxer loses 95% of the time...because he trains to win under the rules that require gloves and no kicking. Remove those rules, and he gets decimated. We all know that's true. You don't know wing chun. I beat boxers with my wing chun, and i suck at it. The late Okinawa karate master, Motobu Chōki, Sensei, is quoted to have said: “Karate is not for the battlefield or the sports arena”. I totally agree with his position. Battlefield conditions require fighting in formations and the use of weapons primarily, and the sports arena severely limits the array of techniques a combatant can use due to rules). Motobu’s position is applicable to the Wing Chun/Kung-Fu methods. Sensei Motobu was placing karate and kung-fu in their rightful place-personal survival self-defense. The Wing Chun guy in this bout was restrained by rules. He couldn’t grab, use spear hand technique, or strike to vital areas such as knees, eyes, and throat, however, for one’s survival those techniques are in full play. So these boxer vs. karate/kung-fu spectacles can be very misleading.

Its punches lack power and are just a way to blitz or trap into close range - in order to deliver the only K.O.-worthy payload it's got - which is elbow to the jaw or sternum. That's the only worthwhile objective, really. But I doubt that red dude would agree to taking elbows, would he?

Wing Chun is such a confusing martial art to me. On the one hand, especially compared to other kung fu styles, it seems so much more practical and straightforward. No flowery movements. No weird animal style type stuff. Just punches and kicks. Stuff that we know works.
Yet on the other hand it's like they took those punches and kicks and made them the least effective as possible. I like to compare to boxing. (And yes, I know it was not developed from boxing.) But it's like they took boxing and deliberately made it worse.
Instead of the boxing stance which is natural and mobile and flexible, they said, hey let's take our feet make them parallel (which is less good for balance and mobility) and then let's turn our feet and knees awkwardly inward which is uncomfortable and unnatural. and then let's take the punches of boxing and first of all let's get rid of hooks and uppercuts. And then, let's take what's left and instead of punching from the whole body the way boxing does let's just make them arm punches. And then there's trapping. as I've said before, there's really no such thing as trapping range. Trapping range is grappling range.
The whole thing is a dichotomy of useless practicality. Lol.

Why and the time when wing chun was created is different than when and why boxing was created
Wing chun was created back then to counter other chinese martial arts
Then they didn't evolved their style
Whereas in west boxing was constantly pressure tested and its modern martial art
2 days ago i sparred with an state level boxer and used an aspect of wing chun and it worked on him ( chain of punches ) ( im more into mma)
Because im sure he has never seen that technique before
I know the antitode of the move i used from the perspective of his art
He should have sway back and hit with hook
I think 9/10 boxer will win against wing chun practitoner
For street wing chun can be good

@@mikereigns8134 well said. I especially like what you said about how boxing evolved due to the constant pressure testing. WC guy should have kept circling into the hook and finding ways to trap or jam it, then enter. I mean, he would likely have gotten hit 90% of those times, but at least execute the gameplan your art preaches. He didn't create opportunities to trap that were timed/dictated by himself, ceding initiative to the boxer. When he did initiate, it was low success chain punching or even jumping and punching.

Kick to the knees or groin. Particularly with the boxer being so much taller. If they were fighting with boxing rules, then it's not showing the real effect of WC.

Well as boxing vs Wing Chun goes it all depends on the skills of the fighter. I had the opportunity to go against two golden glove boxers in my youth; one the streets and the other in a controlled environment. I am not ragging on boxing, because I believe it is one of the best defense arts out there for many reason. In my experiences, I came out ahead for a few good reasons: attitude (100% confidence in Wing Chun), good eye and hand coordination, good control and understanding of distance, good tracking skills, continues attacks (I also used my attack as defenses), good control of the opponents stance, but most important of all I landed my punches with meaning. At the time Emin Boztepe was the head of the American WT organization. His drills were designed to deal with boxers, grapplers, and thugs. No nonsense training. Thinking back, I think I had the honor to go against a 3rd golden glove boxer; same result.

If this dude is a coach, he needs to be shut down for not knowing even the basics. What an embarrassment to wing chun. He should be ashamed. Wing chun is perfect for fighting a boxer. This guy is a joke. Many of you have probably seen Ip Man movies. He fought a boxer. But this is inaccurate. It was actually his student that fought a Russian professional boxer and beat KOd the boxer in 3 punches. If you watch any video of any wing chin versus any other fighter they usually lose because if you watch them they never use the fundamentals. They always throw uncoordinated punches and flail their arms around kind of like this guy. None of the videos you see are actual wing chung masters. They are all guys who have seen too many Ip Man movies

The only way a Wing Chun man has a chance against a Boxer is to learn how to box!!
    Understand the defenses,footwork, timing etc.
Wing Chun players typically spar other Wing Chun players thus their inability to deal with boxers. No criticism intended, its just fact!
Practicing defenses against locked punches is useless and will never work against boxers in the empty hand range. Boxers dont leave any limbs out to be trapped.

I will hold my position' It's not that the style doesn't work, any style, it's implementation.
My experience has been this: You learn the basics- how to properly kick, punch, block- and that's it.
If you do anymore than that, you put yourself into a mental box and will not be able to adjust to the situation and will, quite literally, try to force what you learn into the situation. The problem is that the opponent will not follow suit and will do something contrary. The result will be what happened to the Wing Chun guy.

Where is the Wing Tsun "接受前进的,跟随后退的,如果失去联系,就向前进攻" basic strategy? This fighter has accepted ego and panic, and has abandoned even the few useful moves the style has to offer. A more skilled proponent would have been more useful as an example. I have fought better than he, and they were not instructor level.

Tough pill to swallow. The boxer danced around the WC teacher. Lack of focus on WC teacher. Maybe moving in and out, then move to the left or right, to see what's coming from boxer. Definitely, softening up the mid section with some kicks, that might help, seeing the boxer was taller. Need to attack with kicks. Don't fight his fight, fight yours. Need footwork, be more agile "or" you get picked off. Kudos to boxing 🥊! Bruce Lee started as a boxer, won a few fights. Bruce Lee could've used his cha cha dancing in this case. But overall, an experienced boxer, look out!
