Love your thoughtfulness in pipe smoking. Great conversation...as we all go through this art of just the right cadence, heat, flavor, or overall enjoyment. Seems the last part of the bowl is always a challenge. Loved your explanation of the crackling. I do find pleasure in being able to smoke all the way to ash but find I stop when I'm almost there to avoid the taste of the ash and the mere experience of not being able to keep it lit all the way to the bottom.

There is a hump in pipe smoking related to skill and experience. Once you get over the hump, you will be able to enjoy the pipe smoking experience more fully. If you never get over that hump, you might find yourself encountering issues over and over again (Heat, moisture, bite, etc). Unfortunately for new smokers, you just have to practice smoking until you get past that hump.

This video is good knowledge that new pipe smokers should pay close attention to.

Good info there. I smoke my pipes to the bottom of the bowl. One needs to add also the humidity in the air that goes through the pipe, and certain seasons and locations can have quite high relative humidity. Cheers, Janez

Thanks for the experience! This is great information! Smoking a pipe is a whole ritual, it is an art! And there are so many nuances in smoking a pipe that we must share our experiences and observations with each other. Thanks for your work Thomas!

Hi Thomas! Interresting video, as always👍 I used to try to smoke my pipes down to bare ash, but today, I dont do this anymore. I smoke the pipe as long as it tastes good and than I let it go out and dump the rest. Depending on the inner shape of the bowl, there is more or less unburned tobacco left. U shaped bowls burn the „dottle“ better than V shaped. I dont want the drafthole to be clogged with cake, or the sometimes thin bottom of the bowl getting to much heat either. So for me a litte „dottle“ is no problem. I personally dont think that the briar absorbs the moisture like a sponge. I once cut an old pipe in two halfs and there were no signs that moisture got into the wood. But thats just my personal opinion, of which I‘m the leading expert😎 cheers Johannes

Good video, and very interesting thoughts. I learned alot. Last time I smoked my pipe, the last part was disgusting. There were a lot of moisture.

When it beginns to taste bad-please let it go out! The only reason smoking a pipe should be enjoyment…

I am very sensitive to tonguebite, and some blends will bite me no matter what I do. Some actually bite me instantly when I light the pipe even though the tobacco is dried out to almost crispy.
