- INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS (now out on Blu-ray and DVD), the Coen brothers’ latest odyssey into the desolate corners of Americana, stars Oscar Isaac in the title role, as an ill-fated musician navigating the Greenwich Village folk scene of the 1960s.
For our release of the film, filmmaker Guillermo del Toro sat down with writer-directors Joel and Ethan Coen for an insightful forty-minute conversation about the evolution of the brothers’ careers and where INSDIE LLEWYN DAVIS is situated within their filmmaking lineage.

The cinematography (or visual effects) of this movie is really unique. Like an oil painting, something out of focus or washed out...like the world of Llewyn Davis. 500 undred miles away from home.

Inside Llewyn Davis and A Serious Man are brilliant companion pieces. I love how they take Schrödinger's cat from A Serious Man and manifest it in Inside Llewyn Davis. I wish they'd do a third film featuring it so there could be a Coen Brothers Cat Trilogy.

i could watch guillermo and the coen brothers talk about a films for hours. i bet they did a lot of talking at cannes 2015 w/ xavier dolan. i would love to be a fly on the wall for that.

What happened with this film? It's obviously a masterpiece, but it felt like many people just brushed it off.
+OBGrollout It's true. I remember people calling it bland and boring, and I felt like I was watching this unseen American mythology that's existed for ages. The characters, the symbolism, people ought to be studying Inside Llewyn Davis.

+Gonzo Lewd Completely agree. I hope there will be more to Hail Caesar than pretty faces, and punchy jokes, but no doubt the Coens will bring something only they can imagine. Looking forward to it!
+Michael Aronson Probably because it's so dark and gray -- people don't want to see themselves in that world. Too many modern movie watchers are content with brain-dead escapist spectacle.

What I love most about the Coens is their affection for people who would be described as losers or under achievers. They're right in believing Van Ronk is a more interesting character than Dylan.
One of the most important films I've ever seen, I wish I could see it for the first time again.
I just love this movie.

My favourite Coens Movie. And it has grown over time. 2 years from its release and people still talk about it.
I love the dual personalities of the Coen brothers', just check them out both have a personality and it reflects in their films. The one with the darker personality makes the darker film, the one with the lighter personality makes the more comedic film. But one will direct while the other produces. It's great.

+JeffTheDudeAbides They are actually both co-directors on every movie. They don't take turns directing and producing like it says in the credits of their older films. It only says that one directs and one produces in the credits of some of their movies because it was a union rule (they are members of the Director's Guild of America) that didn't allow there to be more than one director accredited to a movie, so they would take turns getting accredited for directing. The DGA has since changed the rule and now both brothers are listed as directors. However, I agree that both of their personalities are different and you can see that shine through in their movies.

Ethan is a philosophy graduate with a senior year thesis on Wittgenstein. Joel is film school graduate. One of the most popular quote by Wittgenstein is "Literally the deepest of philosophical ideas can be expressed through comedy." So my guess is Wittgenstein has heavily influenced their work philosophically.
Folk Musicians criticised the movie, claiming it showed the Folk Scene of the 60's in a bad light.
The Folk Scene in this movie is only ever shown as pure and good. Llewyn is the one who is shown otherwise. The Folk we see isn't what Llewyn knows, he sees it as an intruder or a pretender.
Idk why this is the first time I’ve seen what the Coen Brothers look like. I’ve been watching their movies for years but for some reason never knew their faces
Must see this film. Reminds me of 'THE GHOST OF NEIL DIAMOND' , a dark comedy about a fading folk legend, who's homeless, who goes through constant rejections, including his partner, who finds himself completely alone, but it's all different because it's set in the Far East, where the only option left is to impersonate - though it gnaws his soul - the one and only Neil Diamond. Published in 2008, with revised edition in 2010, predating this film a few years. But must see this Llewyn. Sounds such a terrific movie and it's such an amazing and wonderful coincidence.
This movie is a masterpiece
Inside Llewyn Davis is probably one of the best films I've seen in this past decade. It is depressing as hell and it will be a long time before I watch it again.

I don't think it's depressing at all. I think it's kind of motivating.
The Coen brothers are, in my opinion, the most fascinating creative force in contemporary cinema. They possess an intriguing predilection for established Hollywood genres such as the gangster film in "Blood Simple" but they aspire to infuse these paradigms with au courant sensibilities sufficient enough to categorize their product as black humor while retaining the moral probity to stop short from sponsoring the deprave coetaneous ethics of Quentin Tarantino.
That's a lot of big words, friend.

I love the name of the main character. Folk singers are usually called smth simple like Bob, Woody, or Hank. This fking guy’s name starts with two L’s and w, y in the middle. He won’t change it because he can’t afford to be a “phony”, it probably doesn’t even occur to him to do that.
A Mighty Wind was a pretty good parody of folk music.

Llewyn is an asshole and that's hard for some to watch. Absolutely love this movie. Fantastic score. Great job by the Coens.

People don't mind it as much if it's an all-out screwball comedy like _Hudsucker_ or _O Brother_, understandably, so I tend to sympathize more with those annoyed by that characteristic Coen playfulness in the comparatively sedate environment of '62 folk scene.
I reject the common accusation they're _condescending_, however, it seems less successful a job of filmmaking when they have less personally invested in the characters (cf. _Fargo_, and _A Serious Man_).
+FungusMossGnosis Yes. Also this film is about a VERY specific time and place: a narrow chronological window. And to have songs about John Glenn before he'd made the flight is just sloppy work
But Rear Admiral Alan Bartlett Shepard Jr. was the first American in space in 1961. Isn't that what the song is about? And in general the space program? Can someone list the other anachronisms? I didn't see them.
Del Toro interviewing two of his monsters, the one in the white shirt needs to clean his teeth, the other one is OK, scary but OK.
Those are literally 2 of the greatest film makers of all time and you spend your time online insulting people

Del Toro is so pretentious I am not a fan but love love love the Cohen brothers. Del Toro could learn something from these guys, how to be a little more humble. If you don't believe me just listen to the commentary of Pan's Labyrinth.
