Trying to FIX: Faulty £85 Nintendo Switch LITE from eBay

  • This video shows me attempting to repair a faulty Nintendo Switch Lite purchased from eBay. It was sold as having NO POWER - Damaged Pins in the USB charge port. Will it be another nightmare fix or as described????
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
    Many thanks, Vince.

I love it when you manage to fix devices that were sent by scammers, it sends a big f*** you to them. You need to name and shame every one of them, particularly the business sellers who put a bunch of these up for sale. Great work!
I'm thinking if you do get a screen with a busted back-light, it might be a good experiment to see if you can frankenstein a working screen out of that and this smashed up one :)

I'm really curious how you guys are going about contacting ebay. I've had a lot of garbage from seller but I've been refunded on each and every one of them by opening an item not as described case against the seller. Most times the seller won't even respond to the case (likely because they know full well they sent me garbage) and ebay automatically gives me my refund. Just takes time.

@@Yoldark34 buying untested electronics is a gamble. A few months ago I bought a untested ps3 from mercari and It was in pretty rough shape. I think the seller got it in a lot and didn't have any games, cords, or controllers to test it. I bought it because it was only $14. I tested it myself and everything was fully functional. I ended up selling it for some extra money but I bought another untested ps3 this week for about $20. The seller couldn't test it and thought it had been in a flood because he seen a little rust in the usb port. That one turned out to be functional as well but I'm currently trying to get it to read games so it may need a laser swap.

@@JohnGotts eh, I have some experience in fixing mobile devices, and let me tell you, some of the screens that they push out are not tested thoroughly for function, especially if you get ones with digitizers. Just LCD's may be fine, but I went the cheap route by replacing the digitizer on my iPad mini, and I got ghost input all over the place. And when you have to wait a month for a part, the risk is just not worth the money that you would save, not to mention all the time you'd have to wait. Go to iFixit if you want quality parts that are thoroughly tested.

Hey Vince, USB 3.0/3.1 is more complicated than all the other usbs. If you Google the pinout you'll see what I mean, both sides are required to communicate at full speed. Old usbs used resisters to tell the charger, the output wattage to the device. Now because USB 3 is universal, the charger and device need to "negotiate" the voltage and the amperage output to the device so you don't accidentally blow things up. I think it uses a single set of transmit and receive pins (USB C has 2 pairs). That's why it only charges on one side and not the other. Cell phones and laptops can both use USB C but one take 5v and the other 19v. How does the charger know what it's charging? It communicates through those pins.

Cheers Anonymous, you deserve it :-) I think the port was shorted which knocked out the chip. I reckon the screen was exchanged to fix up another Switch Lite and then all put together to resemble an untested Switch Lite on eBay. I haven't tried but I am now thinking the screen can be taken out by just undoing the ribbon cables and heating up and pulling off the front digitiser, without completely dismantling it all, hence the reason the LCD wasn't connected back up. Just guessing though. This one felt good to get working again :-)

Sorry, I know I'm late to this one. But given that ebay is essentially a cross between a garage sale and a shady used car lot, I think you're onto something with the USB port being a cover for the other problems. I imagine the screen was known to be shattered, and the ribbon cables were left out purposefully since a usb issue may translate to a quicker/higher sale than a shattered screen. Really too bad ebay doesn't have a better way to deal with that kind of thing.
Always enjoy your videos- you're a master!

Had a result turn up today, Epson branded chronograph watch in immaculate fully working condition, high second hand... less than a tenner and took the back off and its a Seiko (not Sii) high end quartz in there all gleamy and gawjus. So another one in my Japanese collection and pleased as punch.

Well done, It's great you were able to fix it, to working order. You need to stop being so forgiving, stop making excuses, for these dodgy sellers. Surely there are actions you can take against the seller, false advertising for a start. You must be able to get your money back, if there is more wrong with it than advertised.

The bent pins obviously caused the "short circuit" on the IC charge chip. so no surprise there. Vince, get yourself an ESD lead, so you can handle the P. C. B/ SMD sensitive IC's without damaging them with static from your body. Excellent vedio 👍. Stay safe ❤️

Great video! I know the feeling of thinking that you broke something, only to have it work after fiddling with it around too, it's really stressful! But I'm so happy that the motherboard started working after you replaced the charging chip, I was smiling ear to ear :) Hopefully the next switch lot will turn out better, putting a good item together out of many defective ones feels so satisfying.

    MyMateVince: “Gutted is an understatement...”
To state that emotion adequately, you’d have to resort to outright swearing.
Good thing you didn’t need to, though... but it means “gutted” isn’t an understatement...
    *It’s an overstatement!*

Small tip which I learned from youtube. When there is a short and you remove the chip, verify with the multimeter that the short is gone before putting the new one ;)

Your the man Vince. Totally understand you want to fix things just to feel that satisfaction. I have a PS3 that needs the capacitor trick you did in a recent video and I have a 50 inch Samsung TV that I’m 90% sure is a dead SMD capacitor causing half a screen. But I have no method to test. Do you happen to know of a cheap multimeter that beeps to show a short? I don’t have a clue how to figure it out on a bog standard multimeter. Great video also!

Not sure about it though because the costs of shipping, replacements and the fact that it's used so that brings the price down.

I hate this TH-cam algorithm, big youtubers abusing it making their 10/15 min videos in order to maximize profit, on top of most likely be dogshit content. You can send 1h long videos my way, I can make time, especially now, haha. Anyway, very satisfying video, emotional rollercoaster with a happy ending, you couldn't ask for a better one. Thanks !

I'm at 43:00 (have not gone to the end) - I would think (without seeing further yet) that you MAY have got some moisture from your fingers onto the tip of the backlight ribbon cable causing it to short.
