A few years ago I was passing through New Haven on my Harley. It was fathers day. I had just left my fathers side of the family in Oklahoma a few days before. I was missing him because he had passed many years ago. I ordered my pizza. It was a 90 minute wait. I went for a ride and returned. There was no room in the restaurant. I got my pizza and a good pop and went outside. As I sat on Wooster St on Fathers Day a homeless guy came by and asked for some money. I said no. But, I will share my pizza with you. I sat and talked to Willie as I ate the best pizza we have ever had. It was as my fathers was there. Thank you Franks and Willie for a great memory.

Frank Pinello is my new favorite Vice personality. It started with a chef's night out, which I loved. Now it's grown to this super rad show. Dude it super chill and it's just a real humble guy that's deep into his craft. Frank's way of talking to the camera is almost as if he's talking to a homie or something.
Gary did a great job running the many Pepe’s pizza locations. They own the Connecticut pizza scene (no small feat!). I thank him for the great memories with my family and friends eating at his restaurants, and my condolences to his family.
I revisit this video from time to time. Frank, I'm a pizza guy, and a fairly decent pizza maker. I'm fourth generation Ellis Island New York born and raised. At 21, I ended up in Connecticut, and met my wife, a lovely Italian mutt like me. I'm now 41, and I had real difficulty making the adjustment and accepting the culture here. However, I found their Italian American culture so intriguing, and their pizza so unique that I was able to build a life here. As Ny'ers we were told that everything we did was better and to see the humbleness, humility, passion and respect you give the love for food inspires me; you are the true Italian spirit I remember from my childhood. This is why I love people. They take something as simple as pizza so seriously, it's art and tradition all in one. They perfect it with such finesse and a ridiculous amount of attention to detail. Ahhhh, I need to go to New Haven.
Was with a friend the other week in a shop that had all sorts of local mementos, and on one aisles end was a old Foxon Park vending machine, we joked about how it was truly a CT item of legend. Love that birch beer though
The clam pizza gets a lot of attention because it's a New Haven specialty, and it's done beautifully, no question. The garlic, the delicate balance of the flavors and textures, letting the quality of the no tomatoes and olive oil and the exquisite texture of the crust shine through - it's a knockout. But for me, the litmus test is the Margherita, and I think that Pepe's makes the best in the country, authentically Napolitano, but subtly tweaked with a rough hewn and natural but even distribution of ingredients, and most importantly, made with the anthracite coal fire: even flame, no smoke, just perfect. The crust is perfect: the right amount of chew and crisp. And call it sacrilegious, but I have it with bacon - it's perfectly unctuous and chewy and thin, and adds a bit of creamy, smoky, substantial protein - damn, it's just perfect. Even in the West Hartford location. Long live Pepe's! (P. S. I just had one last night - it's always perfect. What a glorious memory...)
Was waiting for someone to say this...This is so true. My best friend and I agree that pepes margherita is absolutely exceptional. One of the best pizzas ever.
@ctguitarguy Yes, but so is anything that is charred. Anything you cook that turns dark brown/black, even if its just a spec of the meal, is a carcinogen. But its a mostly wasted thought, because so many things are bad for you. You would think the tomato sauce on pizza is the healthiest part, but most pizza places used canned sauce, even the best pizza places used canned sauce from italy, and cans are lined with BPA or BPS or another BP product (they are all bad for you, just BPA is the famous one), and the tomatoes acidity breaks down the lining far quicker than most other canned goods, so the healthiest part of a pizza, is actually bad for you, but so is everything, you just have to have moderation and a mixed diet
Hes sitting in BAR apizza at 2:17 you can look out the window & see Louis's lunch they actually created the 1st hamburger in America. Its another food tourist attraction in new haven ct.
@@georgehoyle8797 the burgers are good, just different then what everyone is used to. The white bread (no bun) and no ketchup makes them unlike most burgers. But the meat though! Perfect mix of cuts go into it. Not just ground chuck. Like 20% sirloin. You can taste the difference.
@@georgehoyle8797 I'm a fan of Louis. It's the most basic burger ever, hasn't changed in 130 years. You eat it for the burger flavor, it's a unique 3 meat blend. If you want a burger that's fancier, Prime 16 is a couple blocks away and amazing.
Did anyone else catch the Louis Lunch in the background of the video when the guy is at the table talking at about 2:40. Arguably one of the most famous hamburger places. Birthplace of the hamburger.
The guy is sitting in BAR pizza in that segment. I went to Louis Lunch when I was a kid on a field trip and was vastly disappointed. A dry piece of meat between two pieces of dry bread. :(
Lived in NY all my life. 1 or 2 years ago I actually had to pass through New Haven on a trip and I had watched this episode and Barstool Dave's pizza reviews in new haven. I didn't get to try Pepe's unfortunately but I did try Sally's and Modern. Sally's is still the best pizza I've ever experienced in my 36 years on this planet. Modern was very close but man Sally's was special. Their history is WELL earned and deserved.
How could anyone dislike this video? I'm from NY like Frank, lived in New Haven area for the last 20 years...I've got to tell you; I there is something very special about New Haven Apizza...
Back in 1971 my family and I , immigrants from Poland, lived above Christopher Martins at that time it was a liquor store. The very first pizza I ever had was Modern. Fifty years later I still live in the New Haven area and have eaten in all manner of pizza places in the vicinity. For what my opinion is worth..... Modern, hands down.
I'm from New Haven, but lived in many different cities over the past three decades. Can't tell you how many times I've tried to tell someone in another city, that my hometown has some of the best pizza in the country. They just can't believe it...
I’ve been to that peppes we were on a work trip I had never heard of the place or white clam pizza. A co-worker raves about it we went a couple hours out of the way for it and had to wait in a line that started outside to get a seat but the pizza and experience was worth it.
As a professionally trained pizzaiolo and life-long Tri-Stater, (someone who has actually lived, worked, and studied in Westchester County, NY; New Haven County, CT; and Bergen County, NJ for over 95% of their life, not only just their childhood), I believe that all three states' pizza styles are equal in terms of taste and quality. Nothing compares to the kind of pizza that can be found anywhere in the Tri-State Area. It's not about N.Y. (Downstate State & City) vs Northern N.J. vs Gold Coast & Greater Haven, CT, and it never should be. We're more than a statistical region; we're all a family with a shared culture and what is objectively the best food in the world-Italian-American Pizza!!!!
As someone from CT (albeit not that part) I definitely agree with you and respect your opinion. I'm glad that there isn't a real competition (other than Tri-State vs. Chicago Deep Dish lol) I almost feel like the states should be aligned as Upstate NY, Tri-State (Northern NJ, NYC, and Gold Coast CT), and then the rest of CT and Rhode Island. Seems to be a better cultural alignment. lol
Pizza is good, not the best food in the world definitely but I like your passion, but settle down a bit you're starting to sound like those morons about their terrible steak and cheese sandwiches that are better everywhere else than there.
I loved the end of it walking the most american looking like grammy possible home. I know its good for his marketing but come on, walking an old timer back home after the bar, either you got it in you or you don’t, this is why Frank is killing it. He is not hateing life he is loving it. Keep up dude we need this!
I wish they made another season of the Pizza Show. Frank is the perfect host and I always come back and watch these episodes because they're so light and comfy.
Lmao I love Matty but young Roseanne oh man 😂 Bronson is by far more obnoxious of a person but he’s awesome too. You have to appreciate how different people can be unless they’re a complete piece of shit.
A great night is getting drunk at BAR eating a ton of pizza then stumbling out at 2am and getting a burger at Louis Lunch and then going to Mamoun’s Falafel.
How did I not see this before!? Born and raised on Wooster Street and grew up on the best pies in CT! Sal & Flo were great people and family friends and Gary (R.I.P.) was a personal friend who I miss terribly. Pepe's has the best sauce and pepperoni ever! I still have my house on Wooster Street but we moved to nearby Cheshire and to my surprise and joy, there's a Pepe's 10mins away in neighboring Waterbury!! Sally's has a great thin crust and always loved watching them string up the boxes! Modern has the Italian Bomb and I always get half mozz/half American! Brazi's is good too. Great post!!
Great video! Thanks to Goldbelly, I have some Zuppardi's in my freezer right now. I've had a couple of them already. Really good. Someday, I'll get it fresh and in-person.
I dunno man, New Haven pizza, New York pizza, Chicago pizza; all great pizza, all different, I'm not willing to say which is "better" I just know what I like, and it's all of them.
I love New Haven Apizza. I also love how at @2:13 you are across from the best burger I've ever had at Louis lunch. The original burger joint. So much great original food in a small area!

My grandmother grew up just off of Old Foxen road. When I visit Connecticut I always get some Foxon Park sodas.
White Birch and a Pie from New Haven, nothing better.
@@cable7152 yess
Was with a friend the other week in a shop that had all sorts of local mementos, and on one aisles end was a old Foxon Park vending machine, we joked about how it was truly a CT item of legend. Love that birch beer though
777 haters don't disrespect my home town that pizza is one of the best
Frank does a great job of being humble and highlighting the people he's interviewing and their traditions.
This is by far one of my favorite episodes of The Pizza Show.
The old dude was like Its 5 o clock time to head home no interview gonna keep me from getting home
Their manchester location is the closest one to me, but I want to go try the original location sometime.
You would think the tomato sauce on pizza is the healthiest part, but most pizza places used canned sauce, even the best pizza places used canned sauce from italy, and cans are lined with BPA or BPS or another BP product (they are all bad for you, just BPA is the famous one), and the tomatoes acidity breaks down the lining far quicker than most other canned goods, so the healthiest part of a pizza, is actually bad for you, but so is everything, you just have to have moderation and a mixed diet
beautifully written, I must try this pizza in my lifetime
@Sarcastic.1 I've had their pizza from New Haven, Waterbury, West Hartford and Manchester. It's all brilliant.
amazing how much culture there is here, would travel here just to try the pizza
This show is awesome!! Host is excellent, locations are interesting, and the crew is doing a great job! More pizza show please!

Got rejected by Yale today, watching this video while I cry it off
Haha, I feel you bro.
Yale sucks
you have kids that can't even eat.
Sorry brother. I graduated with Mediocre GPA.
1.0 GPA.
Hes sitting in BAR apizza at 2:17 you can look out the window & see Louis's lunch they actually created the 1st hamburger in America. Its another food tourist attraction in new haven ct.
The first DOCUMENTED...
Yeah but they aren’t the best in terms of burgers. It seems all of newhavens love for food went into pizza and they left the burger game behind.
@@steelmusic2 they're broiled... Sidways.
The bacon mashed potato pizza is insane
Same I went on a field trip to Pepe's and Louis Lunch. My school was next to Wooster Square
LOUIS LUNCH IS VASTLY OVER RATED
They just can't believe it...
really aggree with +freezinfeet -Frank is really a very very nice host and a good presenter. I love his way to explore new!
Truly one of the best shows Munchies has ever put, Frank really makes a great host
I’ve been to that peppes we were on a work trip I had never heard of the place or white clam pizza. A co-worker raves about it we went a couple hours out of the way for it and had to wait in a line that started outside to get a seat but the pizza and experience was worth it.
It's masochism to watch this at 2am.
try it at 3:04am man. it's tough.
for me its anytime of the day bruh
checking in at 4:50am. i'm fucked.
its goin on 5:40 and im ready for breakfast LUL
plannin on watchin through the night tonight
The best series on Munchies.
+Kibbler It isn't
Rest In Peace Gary Bimonte, !!! Pepes is the best pizza in America because of your dedication
nice host, polite, isn't afraid to shut the fuck up and let his interviewees speak for themselves, GOOD LAD
Agreed..
@Katie Rae and you sound like a moron
As someone from CT (albeit not that part) I definitely agree with you and respect your opinion. I'm glad that there isn't a real competition (other than Tri-State vs. Chicago Deep Dish lol) I almost feel like the states should be aligned as Upstate NY, Tri-State (Northern NJ, NYC, and Gold Coast CT), and then the rest of CT and Rhode Island. Seems to be a better cultural alignment. lol
I hope you find the irony in that last sentence.
Pizza is good, not the best food in the world definitely but I like your passion, but settle down a bit you're starting to sound like those morons about their terrible steak and cheese sandwiches that are better everywhere else than there.
RIP Gary. You will always be missed. Great episode. Elm City 4 LIFE!!!!
Frank and Bronson are what makes this channel
+Shvabicu what about mattie?
that doughnut joke was actually pretty funny
+Vincent Hu good delivery
17:40 I worked for Barry (original owner) and Billy Butz back in 79
Sadly, Helen, featured in this video, passed away this week- but she had a rich, long life at 101 years old! RIP
May she rest in peace.
I started watching this and went to lil Caesar’s and was pretending I was eating one of these pizzas 😂😂😩
This has to be the funniest, realest comment ive ever read lol
GlamwithT bro lil Caesars is so bad I feel so bad for you
@Aidan Gallagher Not In Nashville its not lol
@@cautiouscody7852 I guess it's just a Nashville problem then.

I loved the end of it walking the most american looking like grammy possible home. I know its good for his marketing but come on, walking an old timer back home after the bar, either you got it in you or you don’t, this is why Frank is killing it. He is not hateing life he is loving it. Keep up dude we need this!
Absolutely love this channel. Great branding, marvelous visuals, splendid music. Oh and the food looks pretty fucking delicious too.
RIP Gary Bimonte, Apizza Legend
New subscriber, host is one of the best ever. Polite, respectful, genuine and doesn't try to hard to be something else. Huge hats off to you!
Dear Munchies,
PLEASE start the show 'The Pizza Bachelor' if this amazing pizza guy and host, Frank, is somehow single.
ecargxmik 😂😂😂😂
Im from Connecticut and i think Frank Pepe is the best
Sorry but sallys is the best for sure
I’m more of a colony or modern guy
Sallys
They're all good
It’s between Frank’s and Sally’s for sure
I wish they made another season of the Pizza Show. Frank is the perfect host and I always come back and watch these episodes because they're so light and comfy.
what a nice low key likeable guy, unlinke pretty much every other munchies host especally matty aka young roseanne
I absolutely cannot STAND Matty. He's so obnoxious.
Lmao I love Matty but young Roseanne oh man 😂 Bronson is by far more obnoxious of a person but he’s awesome too. You have to appreciate how different people can be unless they’re a complete piece of shit.
I love frank but Marty is loveable in his own way 😂
matty isn't obnoxious, he's just canadian
'Louis Lunch' in the background is the place that invented the hamburger. It's been serving burgers since 1895.
A great night is getting drunk at BAR eating a ton of pizza then stumbling out at 2am and getting a burger at Louis Lunch and then going to Mamoun’s Falafel.
@@Eric06410 louis lunch is disgusting

Sad the show is gone, definitely the most entertaining youtube series I've ever watched. Love Frank and this episode.
Frank owns one of the best pizza parlors in ny and he's still so humble 💙
my home town and never ate there
What slice did you go for?
What’s the name
I am from New Haven, this brings back many memories.
Yep good pizza/lifestyle. I am in PA now
so am i and never ate there
Love it when Frank tried to put back the chairs from where they suppose to be, very respectful.
Who's on a diet, watching this, and starving like hell? xD
F uck that diet i quit , im going to get a pizza !!!!
Not me. 32 waist and clammed to jeth.
Fucken keto. I torture myself with pizza videos. Haven’t had a carb in months but I’m looking. But this pizza looks even better
Pizza is love. Pizza is life.
+chunky soup deep
+chunky soup You pizza-sexuals are ruining AMERICA!
Colin David Chen WERE MAKING AMERICA BETTER
It hurts but I do it for pizza
There's a new coal fired New Haven-style apizza place in Cheshire called Fuoco's. You gotta check them out!
@@NoopNoop I'm right down the street. They are good!
You know this is The Pizza Show when Louis' Lunch in the background is completely and utterly ignored.
Watching this at 2 am. I regret everything.
i am so fucking hungry
+Alvin Cornelius 4 am here..
It's 4 am and I have class at 8:10. I regret nothing
Y'all be afraid to cook at 2 am but see me ima STEP
Great video! Thanks to Goldbelly, I have some Zuppardi's in my freezer right now. I've had a couple of them already. Really good. Someday, I'll get it fresh and in-person.
I dunno man, New Haven pizza, New York pizza, Chicago pizza; all great pizza, all different, I'm not willing to say which is "better" I just know what I like, and it's all of them.
Thank you for giving New Haven the props we deserved man. Hope to meet you at one of these places when you come back!
I love New Haven Apizza. I also love how at @2:13 you are across from the best burger I've ever had at Louis lunch. The original burger joint. So much great original food in a small area!
Thankfully, I live in NYC - so, my ride to New Haven won't be that bad as Frank Pepe's is now on my bucket list. Can't wait.
1:05 "A light dusting of aged grated cheese." LMAO
this is one of the most comforting videos I've ever watched. thank you
Damn, this episode's making me crazy homesick... Haven't had Zuppardi's since I was kid!
