    I'm 77 and I used to get a Rupert album every year for Christmas
    when I was knee high to a grass hopper, It used to by written in
    rhyme If I'm not mistaken. Those were the days.

      I think the lines directly under the pictures rhymed but then the story was in prose underneath. By the way, we did "Those were the days" and Mary Hopkin yesterday!

    In my childhood, I had an old 1950s joke book. It had the following joke (a precis: A little boy woke up in the middle of the night in a thunderstorm and was terrified. He went to seek solace from his father. The boy asked his father why there was thunder. The father replied 'Well son, every time that someone tells a lie on Earth, an angel stamps his foot in Heaven in reproach.' 'But Daddy, this can't be one foot being stamped, what is going on?' 'Well son, around this time of night, they print the Daily Express.'.

    Sad to see the decline of a once great newspaper. The Daily Express buildings in London and Manchester symbolised the vigour of the Beaverbrook days when the Express had the largest daily newspaper circulation in the world.

    Tim,It's worth just checking if you have the 1973 Annual with the brown Rupert on its cover,up in the trees.If you do it's worth thousands as it was later reprinted with Rupert as white as it was felt it stood out more from the background

    • @JordySchaap
      @JordySchaap ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That change was the reason why Alfred Bestall stopped working on Rupert because he didn't agree with that decision that was made behind his back. He drew Rupert brown

    Hello Prof. Tim, I’ll not comment on the Daily Espress as I do not subscribe to that particular brand of ferret litter tray pellet material ( as far as I can tell) but Rupert is a definite yes. I still have a teddy bear (not The “Rupert”) but just with that name and I’m guessing I’ve had him for around 70 years at the time of writing this. On hearing your comment about the change of colour of Rupert’s face, I suspected that hanging from brown to white was a printers/printing decision to improve clarity of facial detail as shading would impair the clarity of the small drawings being printed in black and white.
    I checked Wikipedia and the reason was to reduce printing costs.
    Prof., Tim what have you started? I’m now going to have to explore that forgotten period of my childhood and Ruper the Bear 🐻.
    Before anyone says about a second childhood, I haven’t left the first one yet 🤣.
    Best wishes from a little Bear from Kent and me in Oxfordshire.
